Interesting take on how Elrond would explain things to Estel. As a child who had favorite toys, I'm hoping that Elrond understood the world of men enough to know that while he might appreciate the object lesson, Estel would never fully forgive him for the sacrifice. Nor, do I think Gilraen would be too happy about it. Author Reply: That's a good point, although I suspect some more soldiers to replace the ones he had to burn would have helped Estel (and Gilraen) forgive Elrond.

Oh how terrible and yet wonderful. I can't conceive of a more awful thing for a child than to have to destroy his own toys, andy yet it is such a simple yet strong way of conveying that actions have consequences, and the war is not without loss. Something that growing up with the immortal elves is difficult to learn. A very touching and powerful piece, though forgive me if I still think that Elrond was being mean! Cathy, xx Author Reply: Thanks! Elrond is being kind of mean but there's a phrase - you have to be cruel to be kind - and Aragorn is going to learn it one day, one way or another. At least this way he has Elrond to comfort him and his soldiers are replaceable.

The image of Estel burning his toys is actually a little shocking. How awful! And yet, living among Elves and loved as he is, I suppose it is hard for Estel to learn about death and the pain it causes. Powerful story. Author Reply: Thank you. Estel burning his toys is awful isn't it? It's only just occured to me that I couldn't have done it. I think it's hard for anyone to learn about death but living among people who don't die (naturally) must make it that much harder.
