I agree with your portrayal of Boromir as well! One thought I've always had about the Ring is that it would use a person's weakness if possible, but had no trouble in twisting their strong points if given the chance. Both Galadriel and Gandalf stated clearly that the Ring's best hope of corrupting them lay in that direction; and I think that truthfully, the Ring (and Sauron) would prefer to destroy a good person in that manner just for their own amusement. And Boromir, who had defended his people for so long would have wanted to use any means to save them...... and if it meant risking his own soul he'd do it. The thing is though, I don't think he'd have wanted anyone else to take a similar chance. Partly because he'd worry at what might happen to them, and partly because he'd trust his own strength of mind to stand firm against the Ring. Aragorn and Frodo understood his actions clearly that day on Amon Hen, and I think that they could forgive him for his brief fall to the Ring because of that understanding. Many thanks for posting this! :)

Wow. Love the ending. I agree with all you said.

I believe that some of the 'blame' for the anger of fans towards Boromir was Faramir's acknowledgement of Boromir's weakness. However, I believe this was not entirely true but part of Faramir's attempt to sway Frodo into telling him of the Ring. IMHO

Again, great read even after all these years.

Well said, Lin. I, too, believe Boromir to basically be a good man. Who's to say we would not do the same if exposed to the Ring.
