So we see the men of the Nardol Beacon again. I was amused to watch the Weta Workshop people who created the beautiful, dramatic beacon sequence for The Return of the King speculate on the nature of the beacon outposts on the Extended Edition DVD. One of them thought it might be a hereditary job, passed down from Father to Son in a family who lived up there all the time. Myself, I agree with you. They must have been military outposts, staffed with enough men to be able to keep a 24 hour watch in every weather. And although I am sure the new ones rotating in would bring fresh supplies with them, I have always imagined they would keep gardens to try to provide for themselves as much as they could. Hmm, is it an inspection, or a journey? If it were a tour of the outposts, I have no doubt he would have had others with him, members of his or the Steward's staff. If he is on his own, I wonder if he is beginning THAT journey, the one through Rohan to Rivendell, and on to destiny. He would indeed be glad of a hot meal and a night with good friends as a break from that long trip. Author Reply: You guessed it! Boromir is on his own, beginning THAT journey. :-) I actually wrote a story that deals with Boromir's journey, some time ago -- I am currently editing and updating a bit before making it public. The men of Nardol Beacon did not make an appearance originally, but I once I met them, I knew I would have to go back and write them in! Thanks so much for reading! | |
