Thain Peregrin I: the First Days  by Garnet Took 5 Review(s)
Grey WondererReviewed Chapter: 2 on 3/29/2014
(You want to reassure everyone that your heart and mind are focused here, with your people, and not wandering away into lands they cannot imagine.) I like that line very much! Merry is so right about that. The Hobbits would want to know that their Thain was thinking of the Shire only.
I'm glad Merry is there to help with things and Diamond also seems very organized and supportive.

Author Reply: Glad that you like my Merry and Diamond. I love Di a lot. She's fun-loving but well grounded and she loves Pippin dearly. Merry's doing what he does best, be a quiet support.

Good reasons to have a fluttery stomach, and to rely on Merry and Diamond to see him readied for the investiture. And that threat by Diamond to Merry was masterly!

Author Reply: LOL! Diamond and Estella together are every bit the match of their husbands. I'm going to have to think about writing something that features them. That could be fun. Thanks for the inspiration.

I think that if he didn't have Merry and Diamond to hold him down, Pippin would have run for the hills long ago.

Hah! Good thing he woke up when he did, or she might have next been pouring the water on him rather than in the basin!

"So far, not any different than it felt to be the wife of the heir, but I expect that will change beginning today."
I love your practical Diamond! She makes me grin!

A few felt that his connections with the outside world were not to be trusted and others thought him unnatural, with his great height and fair hair. A perfect description of hobbits' common attitude!

I would love to have heard Gandalf tell the true story!

(and I see that Merry is as practical as Diamond, in his own way)

I also know that you are one of the most intelligent people I know. You can see your way through a problem faster than almost anyone; so fast, in fact, that many people don't realize that you've thought something through before you act. They see it as impulsive. I see it as quick-witted. Sometimes you do act without thought...
Ah, Merry! You know your cousin so well. This fits so well with Pippin as JRRT wrote him. (And I love Merry's wise advice.)

...did I mention how I love Merry's wise advice?

Diamond makes me grin! (As I think I mentioned)

Looking forward to the next installment! Thanks!

Author Reply: Your comments have made my day a lot brighter.

Thank you so much for liking the way I'm writing the characters.

Merry knows Pippin better than he knows himself, and the opposite is true.

Diamond is as strong as they comes in most things. She can give as good as she gets with her husband. They both are stubborn Tooks and know it and they both have an amazing sense of humor and playfulness. They may lose sight of that sometimes but they always regain it.

As for the story about the Took ancestor, I plan to tell it in full in another story that I hope to eventually post here. I am also going to get an abridged version in this story I think. Regi needs some explanation aftterall.

Thanks again for reading and encouraging me.

A good chapter that lays out the difficulties Pippin will be facing as he takes office. He's going to have challenges both inside and outside the Tooklands, and face those who doubt him.

Merry reminded him that he has more resources available to him than he thinks, and there are more than even Merry mentions. Yes, there's the Master of Buckland and the Mayor of the Shire, but as Diamond reminds them, she and Estella are allies as well. And though "outside connections" may be frowned upon, the friendship of the King of Arnor and Gondor is nothing shabby. If nothing else he's learned by example about leadership.

I can't help but wonder about Eglantine; did she precede or survive her husband, I wonder? I'm sure we will learn the answer soon!

Author Reply: Oh, Pippin is going to have some challenges hit him head-on soon, but he's more up to it than even he knows.

As for Eglantine, you'll find out in the next chapter. :)

And you are right, he has some of the best allies anyone could ask for, both in and out of the Shire.

Thanks for reading and reviewing.

What a marvelously perceptive thing to say.

As long as Pippin and Merry have one another, there's nothing they won't be able to face.

Author Reply: You are right. They are an unstoppable force. I think so many people sell Pippin short on his intelligence. I always figured he was brighter than he let on but he was easily bored. I also figured he had a lot of practice writing because his father would have wanted to settle him down so I had him giving Pippin all the transcription work. It would force him to sit still and focus. He can do that, but it is not something he enjoys. He's an observer and an intuitive thinker.

Thanks for reading and thanks for quoting that line. That was not the one I figured people would notice, but I glad you did.
