Tracking Monsters  by Nieriel Raina 2 Review(s)

Continue please? I can see Aragorn wanting to preserve them but if they kill a human he may be unable to protect them... so many ways this could go!

Author Reply: I'm so glad you enjoyed this! But this is just a ficlet to set the precedent. The feladae make appearances in my series from time to time, but this story is complete. I do need to follow up on this plot thread though in a future tale. Thanks for reading!

Heh. Some monsters.
Well, I guess they are that, from the local peasalts' point of view. Animals like the big cats or wolves are apex predators, and are necessary for a healthy ecosystem. But they take their food where they can find it, and a lazy and pampered sheep are more likely to end up on the menu than a wary and swift deer.
I have certainly heard people complain about wolves in the part of the country where I grew up. They have been wandering in from the east, and there is actually a population of them in my country now, after a century of there being only a handful or so in Scandinavia. There is probably a pair of them in the county where I grew up, which is the reasons for the complaints. They are faulted for all loss of livestock, AND the bad hunting in the area. The locals would like nothing better than to get rid of them, despite wolves being a protected species, and sadly, somebody may well get their hunting rifles out if they get a chance at them.
Clearly, these big kitties have strong advocates in Legolas and the Elves. Perhaps they will even find a sanctuary for them where they won't be bothered by humans if the paople in Ithilien remain staunchly anti-cat.

Author Reply: Exactly!

We have the same problem here in the US, where wolves had been eradicated and then reintroduced 70 years later. But they are also finding that with the return of the predator, the land is healing. :) Unfortunately, we have also had a hunter kill the first wolf in the grand canyon in over 70 years 'by accident'. It was very sad. Her name was Echo.

Thanks for reading! I'm sure the big kitties have found a great advocate in Legolas and the elves. :)
