This was so very good -- very sad, and different from what we normally see, but this sort of thing surely happened. Life wasn't easy for most... Thanks for writing.

What a moving story. You really made me care about this family. It is too easy to forgot the many victims of the Enemy.

Author Reply: Thanks, Linda. That's very kind of you. I'm glad the family came across as real enough for you to care about. Ordinary people's stories always interest me. Thanks for the review :-)

This is lovely: poignant and sweet. I loved seeing a glimpse of the elves through the eyes of peasants. They come across more like the merry creatures in "The Hobbit," and it's a nice reminder that they aren't always the grim people they appear when stressed! Thanks for this.

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm so pleased you thought they sounded like the elves of 'The Hobbit' - they seemed to me like merry and kind elves who would help if they could. Thanks for a lovely review :-)

It takes time to heal from such losses, as the Elves know all too well. But at least there is reason to heal, and a sound infrastructure in which to heal. And the love needed is there to be drawn upon.

Well done!

Dot, you conveyed the despair this couple felt so honestly it was crushing; it was hard to believe there could ever be comfort for these people. (Somehow I knew there'd be a happy ending, though, or at least one everyone could live with.) Glorfindel's arrival made me cheer. Even then, though, you reminded me why, as Thranduil was recently heard to say, maybe it's not such a good idea for Elves to have Mannish friends. Elves were… not supposed to be too late to save your children. Ouch. I cannot imagine going through what Leya and Alen are going through. That they came close to giving up all hope and finally found the strength to go on again was cause enough for joy. But the gang of Elvish barn-raisers really made me cheer. I was glad Leya and Alen managed to put aside their pride and grief long enough to realize everybody needs a friend sometimes, and friends like Glorfindel are the best kind. Thanks for this wonderful story, Dot. We're lucky Nilmandra had a birthday to give us all a kick in the pants.

Author Reply: I couldn't figure out what role Elrond & co. would play and then it hit me - use Glorfindel. He will always and for ever make me think of Nilmandra! And he just seemed right. I love that you picked up on Leya's thoughts about elves. I just thought it would be a very human reaction. I'm really so pleased you liked this story. I enjoyed writing it and the reviews have made me remember what a lovely community this is. Thanks for the kind words. (And the nudge!)

Oh my! This story left me all teary-eyed! It was just lovely, the sorrow that the little farm was steeped in, and the joy that the Elves brought to tame it. Because that is what joy is for, not to drive away sorrow, but to make it bearable. "In all lands love is now mingled with grief it grows perhaps the greater."

I see a brighter future for Alen, Leyla and Carin, one in which the sorrow for their loss remains, but melancholy not despair.

Author Reply: Thanks, Dreamflower! That's a lovely sentiment, that joy makes sorrow bearable. I'm glad you felt that came through. Thanks so much for the review :-)

War leaves so many casualties. Fiction - and fanfiction - tends not to reflect the suffering of the ordinary folk.

I'm glad to see the elves bringing back hope to this pair and their grandson.

There's nothing like a golden Glorfindel - and his colleagues!

Lovely read, Dot.

Author Reply: Ordinary folk always interest me. Heroes in their own way. I was trying to just show a glimpse of that within Tolkien's world. Glad you liked it!

Well, Elrond wouldn't let me write him (your Celebrian seems to have been keeping him busy;-) so Glorfindel had to turn up for the birthday girl.

Wow, Dot. I am in awe of what you've woven here in this story. I love how it goes from despair and hopelessness to life and hope and a future. The imagery is amazing. The barn and Alan's anger at so much of what has been taken from him, and what will never be again. There's so much here that I could ramble for an hour! I love that the elves come and help them. We don't see that much in Tolkien's works, but I never believed the Eldar were totally uncaring, especially Elrond's folk. Thank you for sharing and wow, if you're rusty? Please, keep writing!

Author Reply: Gosh, thanks so much Levade! You totally made my day with this review!

I'm delighted you liked the imagery and felt it all worked. I really wanted hope to be something people felt at the end. I agree - I think Elrond's people would have helped, and would have known in what form to offer that help.

Thank you for leaving such lovely, kind words.

You may be a bit out of practice but you certainly haven't lost your touch.

This brought a lump to my throat - I find myself hoping they make it.

Author Reply: That's so nice of you. Thank you! I'm sure they do - they certainly have friends watching over them now.

‘We will give him the best life we can.’

And now they have more of a chance to do so. This is a very moving tale, sad yet hopeful.
