This story is a pleasant surprise. My expectations were of a thinly veiled effort by an author new to me to eschew what we believe we know about Middle Earth who wrote a vampire story along the lines of the millions that permeate fantasy for toddlers to adults, sneaking in a mention of Hobbits to finagle it onto a Tolkien archive. Just another in a zillion stories that have trivialized vampires whose doings are purely recreational to readers who can vanquish them with the closing of a book or the tap to a remote. Instead I read a thoughtful examination of Sam's concerns well grounded in Middle Earth's distant past, which led to Frodo's introspection about monsters he'd faced first hand and those he had yet to conquer. You thoughtfully illuminated his concerns as to his ability to vanquish the nightmarish monsters he must yet overcome to accomplish his final task of destroying the ring. The inclusion of Lindir, from the present and Beren and Lúthien, “Huan the wolfhound, and their enemies placed Frodo's task in a wider context, causing him to recognize his peril more fully. Thank you for putting me in my place! Thank you for a story which most assuredly belongs in this archive. I hope many others will avail themselves of its well developed, troubling and touching content. Author Reply: I'm happy you liked it! :-) Thanks so much for your comments, I appreciate them...

Beautifully done. Hobbit-style, indeed! (And the comparison of Gollum to the hound was... words fail me. Such a desperate quest, and so much courage shining through.) Author Reply: Thank you, I'm so glad you liked it! The Gollum comparison made me laugh when it came to me ... even the thought of Gollum fighting a vampire ... :-P Thanks so much for your comments!

I love this story! What a beautiful tribute. Love Frodo's words to Sam. Yes, hobbit-style was the only way it could be done - through faithful friendship, sacrificial love, selfless loyalty, unquenchable hope, unbending will and courage - all the things Sauron would be absolutely clueless about and completely defenseless against. Oorah! (U.S. Marines battle cry). Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Thanks so much, I'm very glad you enjoyed it. :-) You're absolutely right -- their whole hope rested on the fact that Sauron had absolutely no clue about these things, and in the end it carried them through ... I now have this strange mental image of a pair of hobbits with a large vampire looming over them... And the hobbits offering it brightly wrapped party gifts so that they can sneak past the baffled vampire. Thank you for this very hobbit-stylish pondering on serious subjects! Author Reply: Ha! That might do it, actually ... :-P Thanks so much for your comments, I appreciate them!

And, in the end, Hobbit-style, with an addition of mutant Hobbit desperation, proved enough. Each did what he or she could do and did it to the best of his or her ability, and in the end it WAS enough. Thanks for the thought-provoking story. Beren and Lúthien. And now … he and Sam? Had Arda really come to this? Poor Frodo, what desperate, hopeless thoughts. Sam is the best companion anyone could ever have. Author Reply: Indeed he is. :-) It all works out in the end, Frodo... If you think about it, Beren and Luthien didn't really make a much better a job of it than Frodo and Sam anyway ... seems like you get pretty beaten up going after Middle-earth baddies no matter who you are ...
