A Cousin's Touch  by Pearl Took 8 Review(s)
EverlightReviewed Chapter: 1 on 4/30/2014
One of the things that I learned from the Lord of the Rings and has stuck with me since was the importance of mercy. Until I read LOTR I had not picture of what mercy looked like. I had dim ideas from church but Tolkien *showed* me what mercy looks like in life.

"Evil just couldn't stand up against that much mercy."

So true and very important for us all to remember even now. Evil doesn't stand a chance against mercy, or love for that matter.

Pippin and Frodo have changed but their love for each other has not. Beautiful story, Pearl, it's one of the best I've read.

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Everlight, for your kind words about my story. I'm glad it touched your heart.

Hugs,
Pearl

This is one of the finest Lord of the Rings stories I have ever read. You have perfectly captured Pippin and Frodo and how they might be feeling at such a moment in time. I can easily imagine the Pippin of Tolkien saying those very words to his cousin.

What a powerful story.
The images you have painted will stay with me for a long time. Frodo's compassion for Gollum is, for me, the true heart of the story and you have captured that essence beautifully.

Thank you.

Happy Birthday! Such a lovely mathom, I thank you! I do enjoy all your stories and I am faithfuly looking for you to update some of the longer-running ones.

I like this story because it shows us a side of Pippin we don't often get, yet it's vital to his character. Pippin at the beginning of Tolkien's tale is very young, and often foolish. But by this time, he has gone through many experiences - really, seen too much, and it can't help but change him. The Tooks are a bit different from hobbits in the rest of the Shire. Tooks can be adventurous, and are looked sideways at, but hobbits also have respect for the Thain, and that respect comes from the wisdom Tooks learn through their adventures. Pippin, having seen more and done more than any other Took, should makes the best Thain ever. As much as Pippin misses the Shire here and feels uncomfortable in the world of men, I think Pippin will also always feel a little out of place in the Shire, and that's both sad and necessary. You've captured this very well.

What a wonderful, soothing thing for Pip to do for his cousin. He came there for comfort, and received it, but he also gave as much comfort as he got. He isn't afraid of Frodo's maimed hand. He doesn't pull away when his cousin wakes up, and he touches it, and cries on it. Without words, how that must say to Frodo that he is still accepted by his cousin, that he hasn't really become an object of fear and loathing. It has been like the elephant in the front parlor that no one will discuss for Frodo. I don't think he has been able to tell anyone what he went through because he was ashamed, but Pip's acceptance makes it possible for him to ease his burden, a little. It's too bad it turned out not to be enough.

Also, something I liked was the assumption that Hobbits wear and show their emotions readily, much more than big people do. It's probably true, and Tolkien certainly wrote an easy innocent physical intimacy into their relationships. Frodo's comment that Aragorn hugs people more now is quite poignant. As someone who personally finds it difficult to hug, I envy this in them.

I hope you had a great birthday. Thanks much for all your stories. I hope to see more soon!

That was so sweet! I find that there aren't enough Frodo and Pippin interaction especially after the Quest. This was something! The way you discribed Pippin's fears and pain there at the end and how he didn't like Minas Tirith. Also the way Frodo's memories called out to him and pulled him in. You did a GREAT job! Thank you so much!!

I find it impossible to single out a particular piece of this tale and say that "this" spoke to me more than the rest.

The whole tale was written with so much love and insight. I can only praise your work and say thank you for sharing it.

Oh Pearl, this is wonderful! What an insightful look at what Frodo and Pippin endured, through sharing with each other their anguished memories. This is a truly creative and unique perspective.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Oh, and these lines are wondrous...

"However did you survive, Frodo? How did you make it to the mountain and walk inside it? How can you be here?"

"Evil just couldn't stand up against that much mercy."
