I Will Always be your Brother  by Avon 4 Review(s)

Lovely and sad. You describe the adolescent Boromir, a young man who has to grow up too fast and be both father and mother to his little brother, and Faramir, the boy who is wise for his years, very well. Faramir's fear that Boromir, who is the only constant in his rather lonely life, will leave him, is heartbreaking, especially because we know that it will eventually happen.

Faramir's dreams choked off by a proud, demanding father! Twelve is a difficult age -- Faramir is not a child (except for the emotions) and not quite a man. Boromirdoes not comprehend what Faramir has to offer, yet he is willing ot let him be.

Once again, you've crafted a short story (you must have sons or nephews!) about the bond that matters most in the life of the young soldier of Gondor.

Author Reply: Oops, sorry I didn't reply earlier - RL keeps winning. Thanks for the feedback. Actually no sons and one nephew I don't know very well - I did spend all my teenage years writing stories about imaginary football teams though ;-)

Hi...is me again....!
I love the way you discribe the relationship from these two brothers. That is so special. I like it that you show the "soft" parts of Boromir...I always liked him alot and sometimes I feel so sorry for him, because everybody sees just the strong and hard soldier in him and that he fails. I think he is so caught up in all his resposibilities that he does not alow himself any feelings. But I think that is the fate of all "big" brothers....always have to be strong and watch over the smaller ones. I also read your story of Legolas and Gilaer(is that right?)...and I think here is the same thing happening.
It is beautiful....and I will keep it in mind while watching my two boys!!

I think you're right - and I think that Faramir is the one place where he allows himself to be soft. The hobbits get under his guard a bit, I think, because they bring out those big brother instincts. But really Boromir is trapped by his strong ideas of duty and his loyalty. The Ring took his strengths and turned them against him.

The interesting thing is that I'm the youngest in my family so I don't know waht it would be like to be the oldest. On the other hand my closest sister, 4 years older than me, was always there for me when I was a kid and something was wrong.

;-) At least, hopefully they won't have to worry about evil rings of power and orcs!

Thanks again,

Avon!

I really loved that! *weep* *sniff* I love reading stories about Faramir and Boromir! You capture a 12 year-old Faramir quite well. And the relationship of the two brothers is well-drawn, heartfelt and compassionate. You hint at the changes in the relationship that would inevitably happen to two brothers in a separation lasting months and yet you convey a real depth in their relationship as well.

I really like how Faramir shifts from preternaturally mature into 12 year brother realising that his beloved older brother could have died! Wonderfully done.

Author Reply: Thank you, MM. I love reading stories about Legolas - but I love writing them about Boromir and Faramir ;-) Odd, huh? I love the depth of their realtionship - and I love the way Faramir sees the weaknesses in his brother as well as the strengths and loves him anyway. I think with their mother dead and Denethor not the warmest of fathers Boromir has to have been Faramir's security - but then he had to keep leaving him...
