Oh, this story made me ache for Faramir! You have a talent for getting into the heads of characters burdened by false guilt, and providing comfort for them. That's a story arc I can relate to, so I appreciate it. Thanks for sharing this!

Author Reply: Thank you! I also relate to false guilt.

Rest assured, Faramir, your honor was never lost.

Aragorn truly is a healer, and friend, of the highest quality. It's lovely to see a new story from you!

Author Reply: Thank you! It's nice to dip my toes back into the fanfiction waters once in a while.

Denethor seems quite out of character here. Denethor's entire life was built around saving Gondor, no matter the cost. That's what drove him to use the Palantir. That's what drove Boromir (who took after Denethor) to seek the ring to save Gondor. Denethor doesn't seem like a person who would flog his son for killing orcs and achieving a victory.

Denethor certainly had his flaws. He was a harsh father, playing favorites. He resented Aragorn as well as Gandalf, and eventually turned to despair. But he wasn't evil. He wanted to serve Gondor, and would have done quite well if not for the despair brought on him by Sauron through the palantir. The stress of fighting a losing war got to him, leading him to want to save Gondor damn the price. He would have applauded Faramir for poisoning orcs, as he would have felt that his bookish, reserved son would have finally started to understand what they were going through, and his duty to Gondor.

Author Reply: You're probably right, but the palantir can do weird things to people's heads.
