Hi meckinock I do not write stories but I do read them. Love SOA if I can help to keep the site going please let me know. I know nothing about web sites and have very basic computer skill. Galathil

And another update, as I understand that data can be helpful in troubleshooting. I have received some review notifications. Seems rather hit or miss. Feel free to contact me if you want/need details.

Just to let you know, after a long stretch of not receiving any notifications, I received several at 12:21 p.m. Pacific time: one chapter alert, and the rest were authors’ responses to the most recent reviews I’d written. Hope this helps your troubleshooting.

Thank you! An annoyance, but I'm glad I noticed them and removed them from my story summaries at some point. I had been "away" from SoA for a long time, so when I was able to return, there were a few cobwebs to clear away. (Not only fake "watch" links, but one story had over 100 bogus reviews! All very weird-sounding. Ai.)

I noticed since I've changed my password, I haven't seen as many "watch" links in my summaries. Is that possibly connected, or is it a coincidence?

Thanks again for all you do.

Author Reply: Hi, Lindelea,
Sorry about the bogus reviews, that is frustrating to hear. I have a bit more free time now and I'm going to try to scout the site more often, particularly when it comes to authors who aren't active on the site anymore to police their own accounts. Changing ones' password is always a good practice of course! Although Rorrah didn't say whether a password compromise enabled the "watch link" attack, it's definitely a good practice for all users to change their passwords. I'll put out another update that effect - thanks for the suggestion.
Take care,
meckinock

Hello!
My question is not about registering to the site (obviously :) ), but about notifications. In the past, I got notifications when someone reviewed my stories, and when authors replied to my reviews. But for at least two years now, I don't get ANY notifications. I have to say that it is very inconvenient, because I get reviews and I don't see them unless I click one by one story of mine. I am often late with replies, so I might look rude in the eyes of the others - like, "look, she isn't replying to reviews". Do you have any idea to solve the problem?
Thanks!

Author Reply: Hi, Ellyn
Sorry about the problem with review notifications. Mine seem to be spotty as well - I hadn't noticed because I'm not updating regularly, but I actually didn't get several of the review replies to the administrative update. I will check into it and see if we can fix it, in the meantime I've sent an e-mail to the e-mail account linked to your profile, if you get it please reply.
Thanks,
meckinock

I'm pleased to know that there are at least three more years. Is there any way that we as users of the site can contribute to to keep it going even longer? I would definitely donate something to a fund for that purpose I would hate to see it eventually go the way of West of the Moon or The Last Ship!

Author Reply: Hi, Dreamflower,
Thank you for all your wonderful stories and for staying active on the site and mentoring so many other writers. That's been an incalculable benefit to the site and the fandom. Without the "core team" here at SoA, it would have likely gone the way of many other fine fanfiction sites from the "golden era" of LOTR fandom. Your offer to contribute to the upkeep is much appreciated; right now the cost is not so much the limiting factor, but if it ever comes to that we will let everyone know. We renewed the site for three years mainly because that's the time period that our hosting service allows us to renew for and it's probably best to keep options open. I also would hate to see the site ever go the way of the Lost Ship! The main challenge I see for the site is keeping it functional and secure since it's nearly 20 years old. It's a tremendous credit to Rorrah's original coding expertise and to her ongoing efforts that the site still works as well as it does; however, as you can see it's a bit like an old car now and needs a lot of babying and baling wire. I hope we can keep it going for a long time though.

Thank you for updates and news! I check SOA every day, and love this site.

Author Reply: As nice as it is to attract new readers and writers, it's especially wonderful to see that some of SoA's "original" authors like you remain active on the site, Shirebound. Your body of work and your fellowship have contributed enormously to the fandom and the site over many years. Thank you.

Meckinock!

So happy to see new authors posting. While I may post elsewhere I do tend to think of Stories of Arda as my fanfiction home and would be very sad if it no longer here! I had been away for a ten-year span from writing fanfic and then in 2019 plot bunnies visited me with a vengeance and I started writing again. I was so pleased that SoA was still here and I still remembered my password (somehow). The site has been a welcomed friend during these COVID times and given me a place to find community in these strange times! SoA has always maintained a high standard and quality of writing. Thank all of you Mods for everything you do to maintain the site. Nilmandra had a wonderful vision and you guys have maintained it so well! Thank you!

So glad to read this! Thank you for all you do to keep the site going. Though I haven't had much time for reading or writing lately, I keep coming back every time I have a spare moment. This is my happy place.

Author Reply: Thanks, Lindelea! I feel the same way about Stories of Arda. We just renewed the site for three more years and I hope we can keep it going as long as there is interest. It's wonderful to still see so many people enjoying the site. Although some of us have drifted away from the fandom over the years, we all think of Stories of Arda as our family and a home we love to go back to. We remain grateful for Nilmandra's vision in creating the site and we are very lucky that Rorrah did such a good job of coding it - even though the site is almost 20 years old, it mostly still works (cross fingers). If you or any of the other "old timers" have any suggestions about how we can improve the site, you can always email me at storiesofarda@gmail.com.
