Thank you for showing us how the hobbits occupied the late night hours before beginning the quest as a fellowship. It is notable that while reviewing his time in Rivendell, Frodo concentrates on his positive impressions of the elves and others rather than on his recovery. I enjoy reading descriptions of wilderness and gardens, and yours is lovely. tender white blossoms glowing in the night with borrowed starlight is my favorite. I've read that many gardeners are mindful when they choose white flowering plants of how beautifully they shine forth at night. The way you tell us that the garden isn't in early stages of neglect is touching showing how elves make efforts over time to please one another. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them may have come to love the garden as Legolas made it over the years of tending it. Here are the apt words you used to inspire my thoughts: I helped slightly for it to grow more wildly, and this is the way I like it." He graced them with another smile. "And aye, the elves of this place do their best to keep it ever growing in its natural way, all the time I am far away. It is also touching that Frodo perceptively notices the following: Frodo was even more puzzled and struck with amazement at the disarming, almost innocent smile and the merry tone in the voice of the elf as he answered, and it was to him as if he saw an indistinct sparkle in his eyes he knew from Pippin. What a fine reminder that as ancient as Legolas is by Hobbit reckoning, he is young for an elf, possibly close to Pippin in maturity. Though this probably wouldn't work well in your story I can't help but wonder why Sam didn't ask Legolas if Frodo could visit the garden. He knows how much Frodo enjoyed and loved to spend time in the garden at Bag End. Frodo has the temperament to appreciate the garden quietly and with pleasure. Spending time there may have been supportive of Frodo's physical and emotional healing. At first I wondered why the hobbits didn't get to know Legolas better before the last night. After giving it some thought I imagined as a wood elf Legolas wouldn't crave chit chat and small talk and might have spent most of his time on his own. On this night I concluded Legolas thought it wise to allow the hobbits to get to know him a little better so they'd have a head start becoming more comfortable with him before beginning the journey. Finally I felt the following line came straight from Frodo's heart: The twinkling lights from above shone into him, and the thought that they, too, would accompany them on their journey somehow soothed him. Excuse me if any of the quotes I chose were Tolkien's and not yours. As many times as I've read LOTR I don't automatically recognize many of Tolkien's passages and phrases. I hope it's obvious I enjoyed your story very much. Author Reply: Dear periannore This review came as a lovely surprise! Thank you so much for writing your thoughts! You made me reread it and contemplate the passages you pointed out. I am glad you enjoyed my description of the garden. I think it is an elven speciality - especially a wood-elf's - to communicate and interact with nature so that its growth would be softly influenced in its natural beauty and not forced into another shape. I think Rivendell and all its wonders, its healing atmosphere, the stunning people around him, the friendliness... it all had a great impact on Frodo and contributed much to his recovery. He found so much healing in concentrating on all these good things. I love to write this youth and innocent mischief in Legolas, despite his age, and I'm so glad you noticed and pointed it out. Why Sam didn't ask Legolas if he could take Frodo to the garden...Yes, you are right to ask. And I have to admit that I didn't ask myself. And yes, it wouldn't work well for the story how it is written. Now in the aftermath, if I think about it... They spent time together in other very beautiful and healing places in and around the house, other gardens to appreciate and find quiet pleasure, like under the appletree between the high growing grass outside their window, or in the rosegarden over the smallest, softly rushing fall where they loved to sit on the wooden bench carved in the same shapes like the roseplants (just to mention some), and maybe Sam was feeling shy to ask Legolas, because he felt he had intruded into his secret place, and he was just slowly getting to know the elf, and dared not to ask yet? Maybe... I don't know really... That Legolas didn't get to know the hobbits better before... yes, I also imagined he would often retire on his own, not used to being far from his forest, feeling a bit homesick also, and worried about how his people and his woods would fare with the darkness always looming close. He needs time to open up. And the hobbits helped him much that night. I'm so happy you quoted these passages and let me know you enjoyed them, they were mine, and it flattered me so. I've marked Tolkiens by writing them in italics or with * Thank you for taking the time to write. I really appreciate. I wish you be well

Dear Nurayy! Welcome to Stories of Arda! I have been reading here for over a decade and a half. In that time I have seen four of its authors go "beyond the circles of the world" as is sometimes said here. I have seen four other of my favorite Middle Earth Fan-Fiction Sites cease publishing. Even here, some of my early favorite writers have not added anything new in a decade or so. Seeing new writers here gives me hope that SOA can continue at least for a little more. Of all of the sites I have read in that time I have loved this one the most. The majority of the writing here is filled with a spirit of light, and hope. And this little story of yours belongs with the best of them. From the moment Frodo stepped inside the ivy, I could SEE the garden. You helped me to see and feel through his eyes. With Frodo I could sense the depths in Legolas's eyes. You made the characters of the other elves real, as well. I would like to see you write the scene again, with the five of them returning to the garden after the Quest. They would all have grown wiser and more subdued. It would be interesting to see the change. Best Wishes. Author Reply: Dear demeter d I'm sorry I didn't reply earlier. I got no email alert, and so discovered your kind comment just now. Thank you so much for this! It means much, even to get such a lovely, encouraging comment from somebody with longtime experience like you. I'm so glad you liked it. And maybe one day, who knows, they might come back there together ;). Maybe, if inspiration strikes. Stay safe!

I like this pause before the quest, as Frodo first comes to appreciate the honor done by including Legolas within the Fellowship. Well written and described. Thank you for this! Author Reply: Thank you! I really appreciate your comment. So happy you liked it! :)

What a thoughtful and lovely story. I especially appreciate this image... The closeness of his friends was such a steadying harbour in the vast sea of uncertainties raging within him. Author Reply: I am so glad you liked it. Thank you! It is actually the first time I attempt to write the hobbits. I hoped I could get them right.

You paint such lovely pictures! I especially appreciate the descriptions of Elvish eyes. Author Reply: Thank you so much! Eyes are said to be the window to the soul, and so elvish eyes, so old, are endlessly fascinating to me.
