Nicely done. Though my camping days are behind me, I can almost "feel the feels" and "smell the smells" as you describe the scenery. And that last bit, the horse signalling his unease, suddenly changed the tone from mundane details to high alert.

Nice mix of Men and hobbits, and what their lives would have been like during the Watchful Peace. Even a Wizard and a... well, whatever Tom Bombadil is ;) I like the way you put it all into historical context at the end -- and meticulously true to canon, too. Author Reply: Thanks for your kind words and interest. You might like another work I published on Stories of Arda. It's called Dol Guldur, published in September and October of 2018. The story of the expulsion of Sauron from Dol Guldur by Gandalf in T.A. 2063, which started the Watchful Peace. He is assisted by two Dunedain (Aranarth, first chieftain, and his son Arahael), Haldir of Lorien, Aranarth's two brothers, and Hagar, the grandson of Fram, of the Eotheod. Radagast is also featured as is the Steward of Gondor, Mardil, his son Eradan and feisty daughter Adrianna.

Too bad Tom Bombadil didn't invite them to dinner. At least Odofur made up for it later on. Nothing like hobbit hospitality, especially hobbit cooking :)

I love the pictures you paint with words; they help me see the landscape more clearly. The little details, like how old the wolf's print is based on its appearance. The horse sounds like quite a character in himself! Author Reply: Thanks for your kind words. For me the description is the fun part, hoping I've let the reader see and feel. Sometimes description comes at the expense of story line if I get a little carried away.

I am intrigued! I haven't read much about the Rangers. A few stories only, and there is one particularly fascinating story I remember reading partway through, perhaps a decade ago, and wishing for more, though I haven't been able to find it again since returning to fanfic. Drat. Is it that not many people write about the Rangers of the North-lands, or have I simply looked for stories in the wrong places? In any event, I am looking forward to seeing the early Chieftains through your eyes. It is late, but when I sneaked a visit to SoA tonight, I found this story waiting. I am looking forward to reading more soon. Hopefully tomorrow. Author Reply: Thanks for your comments. I wrote Dol Guldur in the fall of 2018, think you read that and gave me a nice review. This slice of life, Days of the Dunedain, sort of picks up a 100 years or so later from that one. I'm thinking of another Ranger story to follow Days of the Dunedain but that will take time.
