| In the long run they cannot be seperated -at least my opinion. I go back and forth between this thought – that they are inseparable – and remembering that Elrond and Elros were also twins, but they chose different fates. At this point, I haven't quite made up my mind. I could go either way: both sail together, or they are divided as Elrond and Elros were before them. | |

| What a difficult choice that must have been! It would have been relatively easy for them to linger as long as Aragorn and Arwen lived... but afterward, I think the longing to see their parents and grandparents would have grown stronger as time went on. I also wonder if they were haunted, like Legolas (though he was a Wood Elf), by the call of the gulls? (Or was that just the doom of Wood Elves and not an idea to be applied to all Elves? What did Legolas mean by "kindred" when he talked about sea-longing; just Wood Elves or all Elves?) It almost seems as if Elrohir's churning emotions are so intense that he's the one who is actually blocking himself off from his brother's mind and feelings rather than being blocked by Elladan. Could that be the case? In one of my stories, I have one of the brothers so moved by mortals' love for one another that he speaks of staying in Middle-earth. I think if he'd met a mortal and fallen in love, he would stay. (Would he have the choice to sail after his true-love's death, or does falling in love with a mortal mean choosing mortality? Considering that death is called the gift of Eru, perhaps mortality is not as terrible as we think?) I also had the idea that if he did end up choosing to stay in Middle-earth, it would be because he marries a fisherman's daughter (perhaps from Dol Amroth) and becomes a fisherman himself, thus both sailing and not-sailing at the same time. Since I have not written past Elessar's death in any of my stories, I'm not sure how the Twins' stories come out. The various possibilities are interesting to contemplate. Author Reply: despite Elrohir´s reluctance, I doubt he would stay in the end and not sail; he´s to much connected to his brother. In the long run they cannot be seperated -at least my opinion. | I always hoped that Elladan and Elrohir sailed West together, so I love this story. Author Reply: I always hoped this too, but you never know with half-elves. THank you so much for the review. Lai | |
