This is so beautifully written, the way you have portrayed Halbarad's steadfast loyalty to Aragorn is extremely moving, especially since he seems to have more in common with his kinsman than we may have suspected! The diary found in his belongings is an especially poignant element and a reminder of the price he ultimately paid for his loyalty.

Windfola, I have read this story before on another site, but can't remember which one. I loved it then and loved it even more the second time. It just flows! I loved the unusual approach of finding letters from Aragorn and Arwen's youngest daughter. The archivist was such a wonderful character. I think I would have reacted much the same as he did...squirrel away with the new found treasure and read it before I told anyone. And it was a treasure. This piece is so well written. Your command of language and characterizatons is just terrific. I'm so blown away by the whole thing...every element...that all I can think to say is that it is just beautiful! :>) Karen

The ending of this was so moving. I also have to say that I've always wondered about the conversation of Aragorn and Halbarad in the tower. This was a very satifying version.

I was going to write that this story gets to the heart of the matter, but that's true only from one point of view. It's true that Arwen's choice was painful for her father and is almost inexplicable when you think of what she gave up. But it fits into a large overarching story and from that perspective it's a tiny moment - the mixed happiness and tragedy of a few people.

It was fascinating to see how you used this conversation to show us the state of things both near and far, past and future. We hear of Aragorn's time in Gondor and of that country's state. We learn about life in the angle and how Aragorn was received by the Dunedain when he joined them with his elvish ways. Halbarad tells him, chillingly enough, that he would follow him to the paths of the dead. And yet, even with all this far ranging back story, these two men come alive in the story's present. Wonderful.

What an exciting beginning! I am already caught up in this and dying to know what in the documents. This is very well written.
