A Conspiracy of Hobbits  by Dreamflower 111 Review(s)
PIppinfan1988Reviewed Chapter: 5 on 3/29/2004
They were having to keep score with quill scratches on paper, as Frodo had forbidden his younger cousins to wager, causing Merry to cast his eyes to the ceiling, and Pippin to stick out his tongue behind Frodo’s back. - Dreamflower

That was too precious! lol... I liked your take on who's minding who...I was going to give it a whirl, but then ended up scratching my head. :-)

Author Reply: I just kind of thought Frodo might be a wee bit more priggish with his Baggins side, than those wild Tooks and Brandybucks, and he might not approve of their gambling. (More on that later)
Yes, I'm really having to keep track of who's in on what, and how much they know. It's not easy, believe me.

You've even managed to work one of Frodo's dreams into this story! My goodness, these feel like they're lost chapters of the books, they're so well written! I'm loving every word of this story. I must especially thank you for using Fredegar so much. He's always been a favourite of mine, and he never seems to get enough roles!

Author Reply: If you will check the date of the dream against the tale of years, Frodo's dream was the night Gandalf was taken by Saruman. I thought it deserved some sort of recognition.
As far as Fredegar goes, I think Tolkien must have initially had a bigger role for him in mind. I do not believe he was timid, which is a lot of people's take on him. If he were, Merry would never have brought him in on it. I think he did have a larger than usual piece of the hobbit-phobia about leaving the Shire, but would a timid hobbit have come to lead a group of rebels against the ruffians? I don't think so.

I'm really enjoying your version of the conspiracy. You have a good take on it and how everyone would be tiptoeing around each other - very convincing. I can actually seeing it happening very similar to this. I'll be looking forward to more.

Author Reply: Thank you. Yes, I do see all that "tip-toeing". It can't have been easy on any of them, knowing the danger involved, even if they'd yet to dream of the extent of it.

I still love this. I felt so badly for Pippin when he was telling his troubles to Fatty and I admired the way Fatty handled it all. Also am enjoying the fact that Pippin's mom has taken Falco under her wing. Now that is such a mother-thing to do, find someone who needs help fitting in and help them out! You have me intrigued with your answer to my other review, though about a story about Fatty and Falco that might be too sad?
Well, looking forward to more of this one.

Author Reply: I'm starting to get to the really hard and complicated part, as I get closer to the time when the conspiracy is revealed. I'm really nervous about getting it right, but it may take me longer to get new chapters up if I have a lot of checking to do.

This is a wonderful story... I like how you include all five hobbits; the only time I've referred to Falco is in Merry's Decision--and it wasn't much. I also like how you've developed his character. lol...they all think that no one is onto any of them! Merry would have Freddie's guts for garders, eh? lol... I love a sassy Merry...and Pippin! :-) Take care.

Author Reply: I did get things a little complicated, didn't I? Let's see: Frodo knows Sam knows; Sam knows Merry knows; Merry knows Sam knows, and told Fatty, so Fatty knows; Fatty knows that Pippin knows, and Pippin knows that Merry, Fatty and Sam know; Folco knows nothing, but will go along with whatever Fatty wants; and Gandalf? What *doesn't* Gandalf know? 8-)

This is still so wonderful! I feel sorry for Fatty as he is trying so hard to keep everyone happy. I love his devotion to Falco too.

Author Reply: I'm glad you enjoy their friendship. I see them as kind of Merry & Pippin type friends in terms of their devotion, but not so evenly matched. I have a little germ of an idea about that friendship and Fatty's future evolution, but it's sort of sad, so I don't know if I'll pursue it.

I love Falco! So sweet and so innocent! Seems Frodo is so caught up in what he must do that he doesn't even wonder that Merry didn't offer.

Author Reply: I see Folco as one of those people who take everything at face value. If your friend says he's running short of money, then that's what it is. He mostly gets in trouble when he tries to be funny, as he doesn't really have a very good sense of timing! ( And of course, when he is funny, it's completely unintentional--I really wanted to give Lotho at least one bad minute before he got his hands on Bag End.)
And of course you're right about Frodo and Merry. Merry was so caught up in not letting Frodo realize he knew he was lying, that he didn't think to offer--though imagaine the awkwardness of that! 8-)

I like this idea. It seems to be filling in the gaps very nicely. I look forward to more. I believe yours is the first story that I have read which includes Falco and I love when Fatty is involved.

Author Reply: We know so very little of Fatty and Folco, so it was somewhat of a challenge to come up with personalities for them. I'm having a lot of fun with this one, but I'm afraid as I get nearer the end that it's going to be a lot of work to keep it in line with canon.

A wonderful start! I believe you made a mention to this in "When the King Comes Back", and I'm so glad you've started a story on it. I liked the idea you have about Pippin joining the conspiracy. Personally, I always thought that Pippin was involved in it from the beginning, or at least early on, but I think your idea works very well (possibly even better!). Please continue this soon :D

Author Reply: I could just imagine Merry in full "protective mode" conflicted about which of his cousins to protect and deciding to deal Pippin out ( for his own good, of course ) as if he could! And I had to wonder how Fatty came to fit in, yet Folco did not. It just evolved from there.

I love the detail of the "pre-conspiracy"! I'll return to read more later...
