Thank you for another chapter in one of my favorite series. Ooh stupid self centered nolder. The council makes me so made. I'm sure Ithilden is now understanding his Adar better. Mirkwood is in danger and it doesn't matter. Imladris or Lorien is danger then something must be done. Only Mirwood Elves are allowed to die.

Yay Eilian is here. He won't the council get in his way by having to over analyse everything and waste time. I can't wait for this excited elfling to meet Glorifindel. With Eilian, this has to be like meeting an idol.

Can't wait to see what happens next with Legolas and Thranduil.

Thanks for writing

Jule

Author Reply: I smiled at the "one of my favorite series" phrase. See?=> :-)

My sympathies are, not surprisingly, with Thranduil too. But he's seeing things from his point of view too (as am I). I do think that Elrond and Galadriel may have been thinking in wider terms of ME. At least, when I'm trying to be rational, I think that. At other times, I too get very annoyed at all of them for letting Mirkwood suffer.

I think that Eilian and Glorfindel should make quite a team.

The Legolas part of this story has been mostly set-up until now. Things should move along a little more there in the next chapter (assuming I ever get done with the work I have to do so I can take time to write it--Work. Boo!).

The more I think on it, we should try writing a story together - you telling it from one angle and me from another! I wish I were in the midst of HLIII now :D.

I love the idea of Eilian meeting Glorfindel and them going to slay some orcs together. I knew Glorfindel would be there too...his job is Elrond's back!

Author Reply: I couldn't imagine Glorfindel letting Elrond go off on his own. He's Elrond's Maltanaur. :-)

I'm eagerly waiting for the next installment of HLII. I suspect that will take you a while yet, beta.

You'd think with that mirror of hers Galadriel would realise what danger Mirkwood was in. *Grumbles* Noldor....

Yay! Eilian's back! Now things can REALLY get started! :)

Please update soon!

Author Reply: I was glad to have Eilian back too, I have to admit. He tends to steal the scene when I let him out onto the page, so sometimes I have to keep him in my desk drawer instead. :-)

How clever you are with your research! I had completly forgotten that Sauron left Dul Goldur to set up in Mordor. And what a tale you are making of it, how is anyone going to be back in time for the wedding? Eeek, glory on the battlefield and ignominy at home!
Can hardly wait for the next bit.

Author Reply: Thank you, Rose Sared. I had fun doing the research for this story. There turned out to be more material to work with than I thought there would be but I'm still having to extrapolate a whole lot, especially since I'm writing from the POV of the wood elves.

I had to work today and then went to see Harry Potter. I have to get some work done tomorrow too, unfortunately, but then I can write again. :-)

Wow! Great story so far, Daw!

I'm really wondering about Saruman... I'm pretty familiar with the history, so know what will happen (the big picture, anyway -- it's the details you fill in that make the history real and immediate...) and how Saruman can use The Voice to mesmerize, and why Saruman finally agreed to the assault.

But I almost got the impression here that Saruman purposefully kept the meeting going until he -- somehow -- figured out that, um, the bad guy was ready to do, um, what he's gonna do (without getting too explicit!) Do you think he actually had some way of communicating directly with or conspiring with Sauron at the meeting? (I presume he didn't have a palantir with him at Rhosgobel, under the table perhaps? *snort*) Or did he know ahead of time that he needed to delay until a certain date? Or am I just seeing conspiracy everywhere? (You know the old saying: "Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me...")

Can't wait to read your thoughtful, intriguing, and creative vision of what happens!

- Barbara

P.S. Oh, please don't let the wedding be disrupted... at least, not very much!

P.P.S. I've recently been doing research on Tolkien's spiders, and only now really appreciate just how canon your descriptions of the Mirkwood spiders have been in all your stories... down to the black blood, which was mentioned only once in The Hobbit... Nice work!

Author Reply: In my world, Saruman was just putting up a show of resistance and waiting until the right minute to give in. Gandalf gave him that. At this point, I don't think he's conspiring with Sauron at all. Rather, as you know, he wants to get the One Ring before Sauron does. Can you believe how nervy he must have been?

Not disrupt the wedding? What fun would there be in that? ;-)

I promise a real review when I have more time. But I'm squeezing in a moment to say this:

Galelas: A warrior. Was a novice with Legolas. Has the great misfortune to be the younger brother of Tinár.

I nearly fell off the couch laughing when I read poor Galelas's way too accurate character description!

Author Reply: Wouldn't it just be a total pain to be Galelas? Poor guy.

This plot is getting more complicated by the chapter. Keeping track of all these characters and their subplots - how do you do it? It seems like every person at the meeting has his/her own agenda. Talk about politics. I sense a trap being set here for members of the White Council. Really anxious for more of this story as I think an explosion of action is just around the corner.

Author Reply: I keep track of it by writing it all down. I'm starting to get worried about readers. Please tell me if it's getting too complicated to follow. I'm trying to follow Tolkien on a lot of this and he was one complicated writer. He spent most of his life putting down layer after layer of story, leaving us poor fanfic writers panting in the dust when we try to keep up with him.

Yes, there should be a fair amount of action soon. Actually, this should be a fairly action packed story once it gets really going.

Uh-oh. Why is this satisfying to Saruman? Was he trying to goad Gandalf and the rest of the Council into action by opposing it for so long, using reverse psychology? Hmm. And why would Sauron prefer to attack Imladris--maybe because Aragorn is (presumably) there? This is all very intriguing. I like Ithilden's sharp observation skills--he definitely knows something's up, especially re: the Elven rings. I've tended to think that Thranduil probably knew about them, but it's possible that he didn't and adds an interesting layer to the White Council's deliberations.

Poor Alfirin. No one tells her anything! There's a downside to being the "Mom" type of person, I guess. I liked Legolas's defensive reaction to Thranduil's jab about the Home Guard's control over the spiders, too. Soon he'll be the Legolas who goes off on a trip to Mordor and later moves to Ithilien.

I like how Ithilden can offer all those uppity Noldor and Istari something they don't have---a deep connection to and knowledge of Mirkwood.

"Eilian frowned. “What about his Orcs? What about the wargs and spiders?”

“I suspect that the Council believes that those are our problem,” Ithilden said dryly."

I think your suspicion is right, Ithilden. White Council--feh! (Heh, I'm such a Thranduil partisan.)

And we get to see Eilian again! And brotherly love between him and Ithilden. I especially liked him turning into a fanboy when Glorfindel was mentioned. Very cute.

There are so many plot threads in this story, and I'm in awe of your ability to keep track of them. Looking forward to reading more!

Author Reply: Saruman was a deep one, playing both sides against the middle. All I can tell you is that I am being as canonical as possible in writing about the White Council. I am making up very little of it. :-)

Yes! Yes! Legolas is feeling quite competent. And he IS quite competent. Of course, he still jumps to obey Thranduil (or maybe that's new ;-)) but so does just about everyone.

I really enjoyed introducing Eilian. It was time for him to show up.

I hope I'm not driving readers away with the complicated plot line. I swear it's not me. It's Tolkien!!!

Good chapter. So now the white council wants to try to stop them because imladris or lorien are in danger. How rude!
I'm so glad Eilian is involved. He is a smart cookie... or elf...
cant wait till the next chapter's up!
-sofia

Author Reply: The White Council does seem pretty self-centered, but then Ithilden is mostly thinking about his own people too. And I was happy when the time came to bring Eilian into this story. I've missed him.

I only have a few things to say... Are they crazy?!?! Completely insane?!?! Had a little too much wine??? But then again they don't exactly know what we know right? ... :-p

Author Reply: Writing about the White Council is actually a great deal of fun. They were important in the Third Age but Tolkien doesn't really tell us a lot about them. I'm trying to be as canonical as possible though. We'll see how it all comes out. ;-)
