The Dare  by Dreamflower 82 Review(s)

Get'em, Merry!!! Get'em! I rather like high-pitched songs....

Okay, I'll stop--for now. ;-) I really do hope that this tale will help someone make the right choice if ever faced with this sort of peer-pressure. Folk should never let the inebriated one lie on his/her back, for just the reasons you wrote about. I'll be back again tomorrow.

Author Reply: Unfortunately, Uncle Paladin didn't think that assault would do much for Merry's future as Master of Buckland, so he didn't get to follow through--*then*... Of course, it's a different story a few years later...

I kind of hoped it would be a bit of a cautionary tale as well. I know a lot of youngsters read this archive.

I did a good deal of research on this one, as I'm not a drinker myself. First I picked my husband's brains (he's a nurse) and I went online as well. So keeping the person from choking is one of the very first things they say to do...

Oh, my! This doesn't bode well for my wee hobbit; I've known cases such as this to be fatal. I hope his recovery won't be too painful. I just hope that Cado and Clovis get their just reward.

LOL...have you ever tasted Ginger Beer? OY! That stuff is *strong*! At least, the brand I tried long ago was. I thought it was *much* more potent than our Ginger Ale...just thinking about it now nearly gives me indigestion!

See ya tomorrow; and maybe with more chapters--I read this one in about ten minutes. I like to savor the flavor. ;-)

Author Reply: Well, they will *eventually*, anyway!

No, I haven't tasted it, but I know that's what they have in England, so, ginger beer instead of ginger ale. It's really that much stronger? Whoa.

I'm really bad about inconsistency with my chapter lengths. I've been known to have one chapter with about 800 words, and the next with about 3,000. But I don't go by length. I just go until I get to a logical stopping place, LOL!

I got an idea from you on one of your comments at the Challenge board, so today I took this chapter to work and read it at lunch. The author has done her job: I can already tell you that I don't like those two cousins of Pip's. I hope they get their just reward! Little vermin! Next chapter tomorrow...

Author Reply: Isn't it fun to read fics at lunch? I sit there with my little hard copy in the breakroom, and just read away...
Of course, after Challenge Friday, I usually have to get a new ink cartridge, LOL!

I'm glad you're enjoying this. It's one of my own favorites.

O, Dreamflower! I *loved* this! What a wonderful, touching, and entertaining tale. Those Banks brothers! ARGH -- But what delightfully wicked characters they were! And poor Pip always trying to find a place in his heart for everyone -- so like him. And Merry's frustration with those brats was right from the startI really liked Frodo's stand against Paladin, and how the Thain reminded him of Bilbo when he had his mind set. I just loved the ending about how they both promised not to get drunk without each other.

But, I must say that my favorite part of all was when Merry slammed that dirty, rotten little Banks hellion up against the wall (repetitively) *waves little flag* Go Merry!!! (Too bad Paladin stopped him...)

Wonderful job! :)!

Author Reply: I'm so glad that you found the Banks brothers to be worthy villians. They did not, by the way, learn their lesson well enough. In my post-Quest story, "A New Reckoning" Merry finally gets a chance to keep his promise concerning them.

And they will finally get the rest of their just desserts in a story that will soon be forthcoming.

Thanks for the review! It's always lovely to see new reviews for a story that has been out for a little while. I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

ooooh...those Banks boys piss me off! They're going to be in so much trouble if anyone finds out what they're up to. The scene with Frodo was great!

Author Reply: Oh, yes, the nasty Bankses! They do give Pippin a hard time don't they!
I'm glad you liked the part with Frodo. He almost always turns up to help Merry and Pippin out.

oh i adore this story as well. i love that i had read some of your other stories mentioning this incedent and now i finally got to know just what exactly happened! fantastic story :D

Author Reply: Thank you! Now you know the "rest of the story", LOL! I'm glad you liked it!

Whew! I'm so glad it ended happily! If you couldn't tell, I was getting way to into the story. lol. Oh, well, I love hobbit, especially Pippin-Merry stories. You certainly capture their feeling very well. Keep writing, and long live the hobbits!

Author Reply: I couldn't let it end any other way, could I?
I'm so glad you were really getting into the story; that's such a great compliment!
I'll keep writing as long as the stories keep coming!
Thanks for all the neat reviews!

I love how comforting Frodo is to Merry! And I love how concerned Merry is about Pippin. He's so scared, he doesn't know whether to feel panic, sadness, or pure rage. Tweenage years are so hard!

Author Reply: Frodo is always a comfort to Merry, just as Merry has always been a comfort to him. Don't you know having Pippin in such danger will have him all tied up in knots. It is hard to be an adolescent, and Pippin and Merry *both* are having that problem right now. Thank goodness for good old Frodo.

Oh my gosh! Poor Pippin!!!! good thing Merry got there in time! Merry's right, sometimes pip's gotta stick up for himself, even if it means being kind of mean to someone!

Author Reply: It's hard for Pippin to be mean. He truly doesn't *have* a mean bone in his body, so he really has to work at not liking someone. And the few he doesn't like are not the ones who give *him* a hard time, but are those who give a hard time to his loved ones.

hi, thanks for giving me the story title. But oh, no! Pippin's in trouble. I can see where this is going. Those nasty Bankses. I hope this doesn't turn out to horribly. I love Merry standing up for his poor younger cousin, though
