Oh my dear Antane, I am typing this with tears rolling down my cheeks. Lovely, just lovely. And Frodo trying to wade back to Sam was perfect!

Author Reply: Hannon le, my dear harrowcat. Glad you enjoyed! Your tears honor me.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

The last bond tying Sam to Middle Earth has loosed, and soon he will come.

I cried with them both in this chapter. They've both anticipated and sometimes longed for that reunion for so long, but now the bitter is coming home as much as the sweet. Dear Gandalf! And dear, dear Rose! Her last words to Sam were the most poignant part of this whole chapter.

I never really understood what Mr. Pippin said about Mr. Gandalf telling him about a life beyond this one, but I do now. Rose’s face was the most beautiful
and peaceful I had ever see it when she passed. And, she glowed softly, just like you do, but even brighter. I know she’s gone onto a better place and
I know she has blessed my choice to go too until we can meet again.

That line of Gandalf's, and the moment with Pippin, is one of my favourite scenes in the movie, and also one of the most believeable. I love how you expanded on that here. This was so beautiful, even in all its sadness.
God bless,
Galadriel

Sam's Rose is gone! :*( At least she did not suffer when she went, that's the important thing, right? But, he'll see her again.
It's sad also because Frodo feels nearly every feeling Sam feels.

Author Reply: Yes, and he can't do a darn thing about it which must just kill him, but soon that one soul they share will be rejoined.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Oh, poor Sam! That made me cry. I knew it was coming sooner or later, but that... *sob* And poor Frodo, unable to comfort his Sam through this... But they will be together soon, and of that I am glad! Beautiful chapter, Antane!
God bless,
Ellie

It's funny to think the ship stays there another two years in dock, waiting for Sam to be ready. :)

Larner's right and I was wrong. Oh well, it makes this chapter more poignant. And I see I made that mistake in Through the Flames as well, but that's no worse than writing movie-verse without realising it (Change, Eru Bless Them).

I don't have words to describe this. I've been waiting and waiting for the reunion, and now it's getting near and I feel a sort of sadness--the gentle grief that comes with change, I suppose. And now you've loosed a ficlet idea on me! :)
God bless,
Galadriel

Strictly speaking this one ought not to be the "last ship" as that will be only when Elrond's sons, Glorfindel, and Celeborn leave Middle Earth; and Tolkien indicated Celeborn would be among the last of all Elves to leave. I go slighly AU in indicating Celeborn had intended to go on the true last ship, but actually decided to go before Arwen's death so as to be with his family when that time came, with Glorfindel chosing to live out Celeborn's intent.

But the imagery is right here, and the feeling--the feeling as the end nears that it is time to go and be restored at last, the holes in both hearts being healed finally.

Yes, the story will stay on in the Shire. And I see, you, too, felt that Sam helped Merry and Pippin remain within the Shire.

Their story will hardly be forgotten! Very sweet that they held a big party for Frodo's eleventy-first birthday.
God bless,
Ellie
