One Who Sticks Closer than a Brother  by Lindelea 186 Review(s)

What a lovely Christmas present, to find a new chapter of this! It's so good to see how well Regi's wits work, LOL! *He* certainly wasn't fooled by any "son of Elrond" circulocutions!

I loved the reactions of the children as well! Delightful!

Author Reply: You are most (though belatedly) welcome! Thanks so much for hitting the highlights.

Oh, good old Merry! In plenty of time...I love his holding his breath as he concentrates, and then, breathing in the athelas...

Wonderful scene, dear, with Merry the only one acting (as Ferdi and Nell are asleep) it all has a very quiet feel to it.

Author Reply: Thank you! It was nice to have a quiet, healing bit after all the excitement and worry. And Merry ought to find some additional healing as well, though he already benefited from the athelas applied for Farry's (and Pippin's) sake in the earlier story.

*hugs* and a most Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Hooray! He made it! He made it! And they will both know easing and healing due to his sacrifice, so freely made!

These small veterans of much grief and stoicism also deserve remembrance!

Author Reply: They certainly do deserve much! Hats off to them.

(And a very Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year, to you and yours.)

How wonderful to see a new chapter of this! I love how it opens, with Merry racing along--so exciting!

Poor Faramir. He's been through so much in his young life, and now he's so serious and solemn for a little fellow. He needs a chance to lighten up, poor kid! But Diamond handled it beautifully--she's such a good mother!

I'm so glad to see more of this story!

Author Reply: Hoorah for Merry! I love to put him on a galloping pony for some reason. I probably ought to have him remember the charge of the Rohirrim occasionally... but maybe not. I always found riding to the gallop exhilarating, the closest I could come to flying without my own wings, so I'd hate to spoil it for Merry with a memory from such a dark time. Hmm. Food for thought.

Thanks! I'm hoping to finish it before the month is up.

Ah--been TOO long on this one! Wonderful evaluation of the post rider--not that they had time to realize it was Merry himself! Heh!

"Matter of life and death"--how true, how true!

And I actually added two paragraphs to "Stirring Rings" last night! Maybe I'll get it finished today!

Author Reply: Really? I am so looking forward to reading "Stirring Rings"! (But if that is your Bucca story, as my brain is telling me--and my brain could well be wrong--it'll have to wait until I get Bucca through the battle where they drive out Angmar...)

Well, this one at least seems to be writing itself for the moment. I do hope it'll keep up right to the end, so that I can write something else without this nagging at the back of my head.

Whew.

(The wee hobbits and I are writing the most marvellous dragon story together...)

The Ranger guarding the Shire. The King guarding his subjects. Not too much difference at the moment. But at least the King gets thanked!

Much fiddling and a touch of Gandalf's magic has got my e.mail talking to me again so I am a happy bunny now!

Author Reply: I guess getting thanked is one of the perks of being King! (Rangers, due to the nature of their job, had to go on thanklessly. I wonder if they ever grumbled about it, especially the young, green ones, before they gained the wisdom that comes with experience?)

Thanks!

Just put some new anti-virus stuff on my laptop and now it isn't letting me access my e.mail! Reading aboutlots of tea and gentle naps is just what I needed! Maybe I will go nap myself and see what happens in the morning. When in doubt - procrastinate!

Author Reply: I do hope your computer troubles are well over. Our own laptop is deathly ill, and I'm almost afraid to turn it on tomorrow, what with the news of this new April 1 virus.

Tea and gentle naps, now there's a happy thought. I might just take a page out of that book myself.

Apologies for this much-belated reply.

Most faithful of hounds, these resting ones, lying safe under the guard of one who is by now WELL accustomed to sitting by Hobbits in dire need of rest.

Beautiful, Lindelea. Very beautiful.

Author Reply: Ah, yes, I love the echo of the Ranger with his empty pipe, sitting watch.

Thank you.

(And sorry for the very belated reply. I had no idea this story would languish so long in between updates.)

Oh! That was just *perfect*! With Hilly and the "mysterious stranger" understanding one another, and no revelations made, just the quiet acknowledgemnt of where the thanks belonged.

And I do love that image of the "stranger" sitting watch over hobbits--just like old times...

Author Reply: Finally the Muse has deigned to work on finishing this story, perhaps inspired by that "unfinished" poll you mentioned. I never did get back there to vote, but I imagine I'm going to enjoy your Trotter story when I have some reading time this week!

Sorry for the very belated reply!

Save MFH. Ride, Merry, ride!!

Aragorn was very silly to exempt himself from entry to the Shire. Considering the amount of peril that my favourite hobbits seem to wallow in.

But Tolly seems to be standing a chance of recovery. And, if Merry gets there quickly with his blessed leaves, then perhaps Ferdi's brains might get a chance to settle before somebody else decides to attempt their destruction.

So back to ... ride, Merry, ride!!!

Author Reply: Very silly. What was he thinking?

Poor Ferdi, his brains seem to have a big target painted on them. *sigh*

Author Reply: p.s. oops, hit "send" before I finished this reply. Meant to add, Thanks!
