Via Dolorosa or The Way of Sorrows  by Antane 239 Review(s)
Queen GaladrielReviewed Chapter: 61 on 7/20/2007
Chained, indeed. *shudders* Poor Frodo! Talk about a love-hate relationship. I'm glad he took it with him and threw it into the Sea, though, so that it will never be found again.

So cool that Sam's and Frodo's first words in this chapter mirror one another.

Do you see our Frodo wearing your favorite shirt and breeches - the ones
that you were wearing when I first met you? I couldn’t part with those, I just couldn’t. And it’s his favorite outfit too. He’s quite proud of you, my
love.

*smiles*
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Hantanyel, ammelda for a nice little flood of reviews! I was wondering when you would catch up! :)

I guess in a way, almost everything sad in Frodo's and Sam's part of the tale did come untrue, it just took a lot longer than Sam thought when he said those words.

Sam's part of this just makes me tear up. It's not any particular passage, just the poignancy of the whole thing, and the eagle adds to that nicely. That would indeed be comforting to wonder if it had come all the way out of the West.
God bless,
Galadriel

The contrast between the two parts of this chapter is heart-wrenching. Frodo was not truly freed from the Ring (not yet), and Sam rejoiced that he had been. Frodo is battling with darkness, and Sam can come back from his own some, led by a loving embrace and still more loving eyes. And poor Frodo, not knowing quite what happened at the fire. If only he would ask, his heart might be eased, if only a little. But I guess he'll have to ask if he's to write that part of the Red Book. Or could it be that he already heard Sam's account and his heart doubts?
God bless,
Galadriel

The chain as the sign of slavery to the Ring--but also the distancing of it. The Ring was the greatest horror, and the chain held it. But love is there, and one day that love will be allowed to be expressed openly again, freely between these two brothers of the heart.

But my tattered hopes were woven into new cloth and so I hope the rest will come untrue where I will journey next, where the memories won’t be so sharp and cut at me until I am bleeding, but will be dulled by time, darkness dispelled by Light.

You do have a wonderful way with words Antane - beautiful.

Author Reply: Thank Frodo. I'm just translating. More to come in a bit.

Yes, he was Hope Unquenchable, and so brought Endurance away from death that when the time came he might walk on to healing and renewal. And that love lit both Middle Earth and Aman.

Author Reply: Wow - what a beautiful way of seeing and saying that!

I see you went movie-verse here. But to watch that odd, awful struggle in either version was so odd and terrible; and to see the Ring claim Frodo must have been more than he could bear. But the means of release was there at hand.

Author Reply: I read an interesting essay on this moment from a fan site - http://www.frodolivesin.us/id349.htm. I have often wondered how much free will Frodo had left - certainly not as much as he thought he had and this essay addresses it. I think you would enjoy it and the other essays there. She's very much a Frodo-holic. :)

Did you watch us both topple over the side? Did you have to beg me not to let go? Did you have to look into my eyes and see my terrible longing to do just that, to join it instead of you? That is another thing I cannot bear to ask you. The torment of not knowing is not as bad as would be seeing the fear and memory of the hurt I caused you then return to your eyes if I did ask.

Another clever weaving of movie into book verse Antane. And good reasons not to ask.

Author Reply: Hantanyel, dear harrowcat! Seemingly good reasons at least, though he would see love no matter what too.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
