Four of a Kind  by Grey Wonderer 98 Review(s)

Awwww! The fluffiness! *hugs all the wee hobbits* Those were some good distraction tactics that Bell and Primula used. I love that Sam was a 'hero' at such a young age, and of course Frodo would much rather read a book than go out and play with the other kids. ;) Merry was just so very Merry and I love that he had to eat his words later. Pippin and his buttons were adorable.

Author Reply: I don't write Bell or Primula often so I am glad they turned out well. As to Sam, I could see him being a little helper around the home at a very early age. He just seems to be that type of personality that worries about others and wants to help if he can. I thought Frodo's love a books might just ease his anger at being left by the 'older lads'. I also had fun writing Frodo as the younger child for a change. As to Merry, I always make hi stubborn in some way. LOL
I could see Pippin always in a hurry to keep up and never allowing himself time to 'figure out his buttons'. Thanks for reading!

That final line is perfection! I always adore your wee lads, and how they interact.

Author Reply: Thank you! I love that line in the movie. I know some think it takes away from Pip's character but I do enjoy that he offers to go along with his cousins and never thinks about what that means until everything is settled. hehehe

Awww this is adorable! How good of Frodo to make everyone happy at the end but I can't believe that naughty Merry forgot his promise! My favorite bit was when Pippin thought he had one button left over. Wee Pippin is just the cutest thing ever!

Author Reply: LOL This would take place same year as Merry's big promise but before he'd actually made it. This is before that interesting summer involving the 'baby dragon' so Merry is still not certain that he needs a 'little shadow'.

I could see Pip being the type of child who was in such a hurry that he never managed to get his buttons lined up properly. Glad you enjoyed it.

Oh, I love it! The little Hobbits are all so cute and their reactions are so perfect. Pippin's was my favorite, *grins*.
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it. I got the idea for Frodo first and then the rest of this just turned up.

A perfect picture of all four hobbits - Frodo enchanted by the beauty of the butterflies, Merry wanting to keep it for himself, Pip wanting to be a butterfly and dear Sam admiring them for pollinating the flowers. Each so typical of their character and absolutely delightful.

Author Reply: Thank you! For some reason I could see Frodo so clearly with those butterflies and from that image I wound up with this story.

Merry's reaction seems very symbolic of his later wish to hold on to Frodo - the butterfly who needs to be set free. While Pippin wants to be a butterfly - and Sam to understand one.

Author Reply: You know, I hadn't thought of Merry's reaction in that way but it would certainly be true. He was trying to hold on both to the butterfly and to Frodo. I think you found a hidden meaning that was hidden even from me! A very good point and I thank you for mentioning it. Thanks so much for the review!

Aaaawwww! Those were adorable! You captured each wee hobbit perfectly, even Sam. This will be a good exercise to help you feel more comfortable writing Sam, if you start with little snippets like this. :) And I love that these are from Saradoc's point of view. It's a good way to let the 'minor' characters have some play time.

Author Reply: Oh, good! You liked Sam! I feel better now. You know I do worry about writing Sam and I think you're right. The practice will do me good. As to Saradoc, he and the Gaffer may be my favorite parents in the Shire. For some reason I am not at all afraid of writing the Gaffer. Wonder why? Thanks for the encouragement. At some point I may pick your brain about Sam for one or two of these little stories. (I will try to make that brain-picking operation as painless as possible.) hehehe

This was so beautiful! How each wee lad sees and connects with not only the butterflies, but the world around him. Each reaction is spot-on with their characterisations. I enjoyed each and every take on the Fly-flies! ;-) Thank you for sharing your wonderful world of hobbits!

Author Reply: Thank you for reading and for saying such lovely things. I do like to think about how the lads are different and how they are alike. I am hoping that will be what all of these little stories that I post here are about. Of course I could do a series on how butterflies react to differnt things. Nah, might not go over too well. LOL

I'm going to squeeze my fat butt through this fibre optic cable and smack your hands for saying you have no imagination of your own! What do you think *this* is???? We may be "borrowing" from the Professor, but I've seen a passage where he lent them to us to invent our own world upon his. So there ya go! :-)

Author Reply: Hey! Harrowcat made me eat soap! Idn't that enough? LOL

I've heard that quote from Professor Tolkien but every time I sit down to 'invent' I can't believe that this is what he had in mind. LOL

Oh, and you are not fat. Those cables are just entirely too tiny. Next time you decide to come smack my hands, please, drive! It's so much easier! *wink*

Oh this is delightful GW! The image of Pippin being a butterfly is utterly charming. Very much in his nature!

Author Reply: I could see him running around pretending to fly and I am very glad you could see it too. Thanks so much for reveiwing and for reading!
