The Farmer's Son  by Lindelea 129 Review(s)

'...there’s more to this than we know.’

Indeed, far more than any of them know or can imagine. If only the danger had been a few rogue men and the need of Tookish archers. Strangely the danger came not from without (by men, as Paladin thought) but within (by a seemingly harmless ring) the Shire.

Hope the last sentence is understandable.

Author Reply: Yes, I understand it! So true, the Ring offered the danger. Amazing how it languished for so many years in the Shire without apparent effect. I was also thinking when I read your comment that "within" could include hobbits like Lotho and Ted Sandyman.

Poor Ferdi. But at least he now knows the truth about his ponies, as far as any of them know it. He actually did better taking the news than I was afraid he would.

Paladin is really impressing me in this story. He's showing a level-headed, clear-thinking side that I'm really liking. I am worried what's going to happen to him when he finally gets word about Frodo, Pippin and Merry. That word now doesn't seem so far off. I'm rather holding my breath for him. Of course I can't really since it will probably be about a week before we see and updat to this one. :)

Sorry I can't help with the block quote problem. I always just cut and paste my stories, and even then I'm having some formatting issues these days. Some programs just haven't quite learned to play nice with Safari and TextEdit.

Author Reply: Thank you! I figure he would have had to be level-headed and clear-thinking to keep the Tookland free in the face of what the rest of the Shire experienced.

Oh, the fat's about to hit the fire! It's a shame that letter didn't get to Frodo sooner.

Author Reply: True, though I wonder if it would have made any difference if it had... Tooks and Tooklanders are still no match for Black Riders, after all. Whew.

Looks like Ferdi's lost the last several days which probably won't be to bad (all things considering) except for his missing ponies. Hope they don't give him another setback.

As I recall Merry, when he encountered the Black Riders, didn't lose any days; although it is possible that it was never mentioned. Could it just be a Ferdi thing?

Paladin seems to be ignoring this latest warning which doesn't bode well.

Author Reply: When I was working this out, I decided that any difference from Merry's experience could be explained by the fact that the Healing Hands worked on Merry... in addition to his experience in Bree, where I think he said it was like falling into deep water, and he didn't remember much else about the encounter with the Black Rider. He remembered being drawn against his will, I think, and Ferdi will likely remember that much, eventually.

Thanks!

It would appear that he's suffering from traumatic amnesia, a condition I got to watch first-hand in my husband. He could not remember any of the details of the accident that led to his blindness.

Author Reply: Good call! That would be very similar to what's affecting Ferdi (and Tolly, if we were to catch a glimpse of that hobbit).

Thanks!

So Ferdi seems to have lost a few days! Actually that's probably not a bad coping mechanism--save for the missing ponies, which will eventually make the whole house of cards come tumbling down.

Author Reply: Even the missing ponies might not be quite enough, but there's more on the horizon, definitely.

Thanks!

Glad to see an update to this one.

I'm worried what finally finding out about the ponies is going to do to Ferdi. He doesn't need another setback.

I'm also anxious to find out what happens when Paladin finds out about Pip and the others being gone. It's going to be interesting to see how things play out for those left behind.

Author Reply: I'm glad to say that I have written ahead in nine of the WIPs here on SoA and am trying to post a new chapter of one of them daily, rotating through the lot. One of them is two chapters away from completion, which will whittle down the number to eight. Thus, if all goes well (and that includes no more computer tantrums, which reminds me, I need to do some backups), you should see another chapter of this every week. Think good thoughts. This may be the first new year's resolution I ever managed to keep... Hope so, anyhow! Would be nice to tie up so many loose ends.

Things are going to start moving more quickly, I think, now that a lot of the background has been set in place. Hope so, anyhow.

Thanks!

Hmmm...he's getting closer. It seems others around him are seeing the picture a bit more clearly than he is. I'm not sure which is or will be worse for him, sensing the danger without a clear picture or a clear picture with his son in the middle of it all. Glad I'm not in his position.

Author Reply: I think it's easier for him to discount danger to himself -- thus others see the danger to him more clearly than he does himself. He's more likely to respond to what he perceives as danger to the land and people he's appointed to guard, or watch over.

Very perceptive. Thanks!

Good and evil are too often at odds, and so he, the Thain, is warned. And too bad Frodo won't be at Crickhollow either to accept his letter or to reply! At least the others are aware that he needs someone close at hand both to relay orders and to see to his protection. They sense that the authority of the Thain will be needed to help protect all who can be protected.

Author Reply: Yes, the hobbits surrounding him seem to have been alerted to the danger that he only dreamed about, and are determined to protect him. It seems as if Someone might be watching over him...

Thanks.

I'm feeling so nervous for poor Paladin and his trying to figure out the real picture here, not to mention what's going to happen when he here's that Pippin has disappeared and is presumed to be dead. Then there's the matter of what happens when he hear about the black riders. Of course, I'm thinking that's what's gotten to Ferdi and...oh crud, I can't think of the other one's name. Anyway, really looking forward to the next chapter.

Author Reply: So nice to hear from you! I know what you mean about him hearing about Pippin -- it's the kind of thing that takes the heart right out of a person. But JRRT himself said something about "deep in the heart of a hobbit is a core of courage" or something to that effect. I can't remember where that quote might be...
