Sundry Scrolls IV  by Raksha The Demon 90 Review(s)

I've read three of these and every one is beautifully written. The images are so very real, the speakers seem alive. Very nicely done!

Author Reply: I'm glad you enjoyed the story, Ellie. I do try to make the dialogue and characterization as "real" as I can, thanks for the affirmation.

Yes, the two of them do indeed need the day off! Love Arwen's characterization of the time her new husband is able to spend with her!

Author Reply: The sheer amount of stuff not involving running/riding/fighting that Aragorn will have to accomplish as King of Gondor and Arnor, especially in the first year, must have been a bit overwhelming to the new king, however well prepared he was. And it was also the beginning of his marriage. Arwen would have been lucky to see her bridegroom at all during the day; while she was also adjusting to a new life. I imagine that they both are patient people, and that helped...And I think Faramir (who also had a passel of new responsibilities) would have been very helpful in integrating Aragorn into the fabric of Gondor (which Aragorn had known from the standpoint of a foreign-born general some 40 years ago, not as King) in those early years. But sometimes the guys would have had to just leave the paperwork and get out and breathe!

Thanx for the review!

Storms can spark restlessness and bad dreams in any; how much worse it must be for those who came so deeply under the Shadow as did Faramir, his wife, and many of their closest and most beloved friends. And I rejoice that he does not fail the families of his lost men.

Excellent.

Author Reply: I would think that Faramir would have done as much as he could for the widows and orphans and other family members of those he led who did not return - seeing that they had shelter and food, arranging for fosterage when necessary; and presumably pensions. I tend to think that many of the Ithilien Rangers and their families came to settle under the new Prince's rule; and some of the dependents of the soldiers who died in the Retreat might also have been encouraged to settle in Emyn Arnen and thereabouts as well.

War is hellish enough without having to fight off Air Nazgul and vicious orcs; Faramir and Eowyn would have endured some after-effects, along with many others...

Thanx for reading and reviewing, Larner!

it was his duty and honor to look to his king’s needs, when possible. This need, for freedom and sunshine and a wife’s comfort, could and would be met!

This is lovely, and a wonderful gift for Linda Hoyland. Such a wise steward!

Author Reply: They don't make 'em much wiser, at least in my opinion, Shirebound. Thanx much for reading and reviewing. I'm pleased that you enjoyed the piece.

Nice take on the familair theme. It seems that office work has bored countless generations... :)

Author Reply: You can take the Rangers out of the wild, but you can't necessarily take the wild out of the Rangers - and these two do deserve some sunshine, don't they?! Thanx for reading and reviewing, Virtuella!

A truly lovely little tale. I am so glad they had the good sense to take a break themselves.

The early days of Aragorn's reign had to be such a time of change, hard work, etc.

Thank you

Author Reply: I would think that Aragorn and Faramir would be tremendously busy during the first year of the King's reign - a thousand years of Stewards' rule couldn't be forgotten or completely set aside in terms of custom and law, and a new, Sauron-free Age was dawning. And I think that while King and Steward would have engaged competent clerical/legal help to gather the precedents of the past, they would have wanted to examine and peruse as much as they personally could. Our heroes would have to occasionally take some breaks....

Thanks for reading and reviewing, Utfrog!

I just love this glimpse of Aragorn and Faramir as their friendship begins. I love the gentle humour and the way you show how much these two have in common.

Thank you for this lovely birthday gift!

Author Reply: You're welcome; Linda; I'm so glad you enjoyed the piece. Yes, both the fellows were Numenoreans with much Ranger experience and had had more than their share of danger and near-death, followed by peace with a whole new burden of duties! Thanx for the review!

A lovely glimpse of Faramir's life ten years after the war. I can well believe he would still have the occasional nightmare.I like Eowyn's supportive understanding and Faramir's concern for his children and that he does not forget his old comrades. A beautifully written ficlet.

Author Reply: I imagine many veterans of the Ring War, the King included, occasionally had bad dreams or other kinds of psychological scarring from that time, what with Orcs and Nazgul making the battles possibly even more ghastly than modern warfare. I think that Faramir could have contained/controlled with such episodes, hence this story. Glad you like the piece; and thanx for reviewing, Linda!

I like this sensitive take on the long-term effects Faramir's experience in the war had on him, especially Eowyn's immediate understanding and the way he felt soothed by the sight of his children.

Author Reply: Thanx for reading and reviewing, Virtuella. I do think that one of the strengths of Eowyn and Faramir's relationship is that they understand each other's war scars, emotional and physical.

Very nice! I love Faramir. :) Happy All Hallows Eve to you and may the faithful dead rest in peace.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
