I'm certain that was a gift the twins felt very ambivalent about! On the one hand they'd be proud that their brother had gained such skill; but they would still want to protect him from danger! I love seeing Aragorn with his brothers, both the twins and Frodo and Sam! Many thanks! :)

Author Reply: Oh, I'm positive you're right, and that as much as they tried to protect him from danger, still he would have insisted on doing all he could that those he was with were doing.

And I'm now thinking of his relationship with his other almost-brother--Halbarad.

Great new addition! I can very well imagine Estel in that scene.

The twins must have experienced a mixture of feelings at that moment: astonishment, pride, amusement :-) but also fear that their small brother might get injured or even worse in a fight.

Author Reply: I suspect you are completely correct on all counts. But already he is proving he is among the greatest of warriors among Men, and will most likely grow greater as he matures. I'm certain that all three of the Peredhil must have been very concerned that he might grow too sure of himself untimely and end up seriously wounded or dead as a result. Those first few patrols would have been deep matters of concern for them, I'm certain. But having promised, I'm equally certain he would have held them to their word.

Certainy a begetting-day gift that is ... different!

Author Reply: That it is. And I am so glad to hear from you! Thanks so, Sunny!

I can't remember if i have commented elswhere but this is worth the effort of two reviews. Very happy to see this moment. A young man growing up but a bit of a mixed-blessing as a begetting-day gift for the twins who, while they will be glad of another skilled fighter, will still be concerned for him in the wider world.

Author Reply: Yes, another warrior who will undoubtedly increase their worries greatly while on patrol, but one who will repay their teaching and trust many times, I'm certain.

Yes, you saw it on LJ, but I agree I'm as greedy for reviews as anyone, and appreciate them all! Thanks so, Harrowcat!

This was an excellent fleshing out of that incident! I'd always wished that Tolkien had described what happened afterwards in detail; and your vignette paints it so vividly. I felt so sorry for all of them, caught up in such a terrible situation by Denethor's actions. Sigh...... if he had only waited to find out the entire truth! Denethor's actions caused so much pain; not only to his family, but to others. Poor Halagil! He and Beregond were caught up in something that might have been avoided if Denethor hadn't been so obsessed by the palantir and the Ring. Add in Denethor's grief over Boromir and his actions towards Faramir and his madness is understandable. But I know that in his right mind he would have thanked Beregond for saving his son. Thanks again for adding another fantastic glimspe of Middle Earth for the rest of us! :)

Author Reply: Thanks so very much, Teresa. I'd been wanting to visit this topic for a while, and with the choice I made for the January "Potluck" challenge to look at equal and opposing duties, I found I finally had the reason to do so. Sauron managed to wreak havoc within the seats of power within Gondor without any of his creatures actually having set foot there, and it's fascinating how he did so! Now two more lives are in the balance because of Denethor's descent into despair, I fear. But I do hope indeed that you are right, and returned to his right mind he would have thanked Beregond for saving Faramir's life.

Nice to see the Gaffer being nice!

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Isn't it, though? Grinning. Thanks!

You know how much I love it when the Gaffer shows his kind heart. This is sweet.

Author Reply: I do, too. It's fun to invite the Gaffer in from time to time, I find. He's a sweet old guy!

I think the question is...will this rangy and ragged tom consent to stay. But perhaps, knowing the care Marigold is likley to lavish upon him, the cat will know which side his bread is buttered and earn his keep as a mouser which will eventually please the Gaffer. Lovley touch about the timing of the asking.

Now I think the review is longer than the drabble!

Author Reply: I have two toms here who both want to be the indoor kitty. Zubran has priority, after all, having been mine since he was born. But some days Buck comes in in spite of Zubran, I find. And I'm certain that the children of Number 3 will all take care of the cat and let him know he now has a very soft life! Heh!

Chuckle......I often did the same thing to my parents! I'm sure they wondered why I had to have my various pets; but they only grumbled a little bit! And I can see the Gaffer's face at that moment..... but then even if his wife had been there he would have allowed the cat to stay! The Gaffer reminds me of my grandfather, he loved gardening too! Thanks for another vignette to bring a bit of warmth to the winter months! :)

Author Reply: I think I did, too. Glad you enjoyed it and helped the winter at least a bit more comfortable.
