The Proposition  by Lindelea 69 Review(s)

Brilliant performance by Hally. I knew he had it in him. He's quite the actor.

As if it had just struck him, he put on an earnest, thankful, blinking look. ‘But you’re not watching over us, to see that all is well, after the birth of the babe! Such kindness! Surely we don’t deserve such loving care!’

Loving care indeed! I *almost* felt sorry for Bracken (the man) but not quite. Hope that others got some wagons through.

Author Reply: Bracken's not really a bad sort. It's more a matter of having fallen among evil companions...

Glad to hear of your confidence in Hally. There's much more to him than meets the eye, as Gundy, Ferdi, and Rosemary could tell you.

ThankS!

I know my own opinion of the Big Men's business for the day is anything but charitable, not that they have been so. Idiots! And I hope that others did profit by Hally's delaying them from getting back on watch.

Author Reply: Hally's laying it on a little thick here, but it's all to the good. The ruffians will believe that he's incredibly naive and a little simple-minded and they'll cultivate that, and think themselves very clever, and so play right into the hobbits' hands.

It is quite possible that others benefit from Hally's efforts, though since the story is from Hally and Rose's POV you might not see that directly.

Thanks!

Halli deserves an Oscar for his acting. He's doing everything he promised to do, getting information and keeping the men occupied so that they are destracted from their "work".

It must have been so hard to hear what they were doing to hobbits who broke the rules and not react.

There was a lot in this chapter and it was hard to read but very interesting at the same time.

Glad for an update to read on a holiday Monday.

Author Reply: I know; I click into SoA every morning in hopes of a little something to read with my coffee...

As you can probably tell, Hally and Rosemary are firm believers in the old saying, "Whatever is worth doing, is worth doing thoroughly."

Thanks!

This is such a sad chapter in many ways. Now they're more cut-off than ever, and it will only get worse. This also shows the evil in gossip. I have to confess that I'm as guilty as next in ingaging in the talk, but it never hurts to be reminded that words hurt.

Poor Gundy. He's carrying his own burden. He knows what's what but can't speak of it, even to his wife.

Great chapter. I'm glad you can finally post again.

Author Reply: Good point about gossip. It's unhealthy, and poisonous, and yet can be so tasty.

Things can only get worse as the Troubles deepen, but there will be bright spots along the way. Hally and Rose will try to keep life as "normal" as possible for the children's sake, and some of the ruffians are even likeable, in a strange way, if you can believe that. (Truly misguided, as Rosemary would say, and probably not so bad if they'd made other choices with their lives.)

Thanks!

Author Reply: (I'm glad I can post again, too. I was so afraid I'd corrupt the other stories if I added a new chapter to any of them. I'm glad the problem is fixed.)

Poor Gundy! He does have a difficult job, doesn't he? And to hear Hally spoken ill of would be such a terrible burden.

Author Reply: I think Gundy's job is every bit as difficult as Hally's. Those forest Bolgers are tough. I don't envy them their choices, or the consequences they face, but I do admire them for walking into the situation with their eyes open, knowing what will happen and even welcoming it, if that makes sense. (Might as well be hanged for a sheep, as a lamb...)

Bracken, what a fitting name, and named after Ferdi no less. I love the picture of Hally in an apron...makes me smile.

How terrible for Gunly(?) to have to hear his neighbors speculating about his brothers wits.He kept his temper well though he will not likely forget what he heard anytime soon. I don't think I would have done half as well if it had been one of MY brothers.

By the way, was he there to gather info to give Hally that their plan was working? Does that make sense? Haven't gotten any sleep yet tonight.

Author Reply: It makes me smile, too. Although people like to make jokes about Hally starving to death if something happened to Rosemary, he's actually quite a good cook in his own right.

I know I'd have trouble listening to someone denounce one of my brothers. The only thing that keeps him silent is the knowledge that he's protecting Hally and Hally's family by his silence, even though it feels like a betrayal.

You're making perfect sense! As a matter of fact, you're exactly right. He has no other reason to go to the market, after spending his life savings the week before, but to gather information and to see if Hally's plan is working, or if they have to engineer a shouting confrontation in the middle of the town to add a persuasive touch to the picture they're painting.

(What kind of newborn pups are you watching over? We have a puppy about ten hours' drive away, that we are chafing to go and pick up... just another month, and she'll be ours.)

Perfect, my dear! Absolutely perfect! Ah, dear Viola...

Author Reply: Thank you! She does have a good heart, but...

Well, their ploy is certainly working. Hally may be quiet but he's as sharp as anyone, maybe more so. The children's remarks definitely made it seem authentic to Violet and now the rumors will be spreading like wild fire.

Author Reply: Hally is the perfect picture of the phrase "still waters run deep". I think those who don't know him well or who don't pay close attention are inclined to underestimate him.

Thanks!

And poor Violet doesn't appreciate just how much she as well as the ruffians are being taken in by this truly clever Bolger! Heh!

Author Reply: She certainly doesn't. Guess it's a testimony to Hally and Rose's skill...

Thanks!

Okay, I know Hally and Rose can't say anything to anyone about what they're up to, but having to deal with people like Violet into the bargain just makes it worse. I'm sure I could explain it, but I really don't like her. I know she's just being the typical hobbit of the time but she's a bit on the judgemental side and she just rubbed me wrong. Don't get me wrong, I think she was perfect for this story, I just don't think I'd like to meet her. :)

Author Reply: LOL! I read somewhere that JRRT himself found typical Shirefolk to be insular and tiresome. You're in good company!

Thanks!
