Thain Peregrin I: the First Days  by Garnet Took 65 Review(s)
DreamflowerReviewed Chapter: 4 on 3/26/2014
There is so much to love about this chapter--the servants' shock at seeing Pippin at first breakfast; Regi's surprise at seeing him already at work; Pippin's dealings with the sheep farmers; and Pippin's skillful takedown of the malcontents. "Damaged goods"? "Reading MINDS?!?" Good grief!

But the most fun was his bantering with Regi afterwards.

Great chapter!

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Dreamflower. This and the other reviews had me grinning ear to ear. I was reading on the city bus and thought someone might question my almost giggling with joy.

Isn't it amazing the things the Tooks can dream up with just a little fuel for the imagination. I think if Pippin hadn't dealt with those idiot complainers, within the week someone whould have claimed they seen him flying or levitating something. :D

Glad you like the banter. I'm enjoying writing the dialogue between both Pippin and Regi and Pippin and Diamond.

Thanks again for the wonderful review.

He did well with the sheep farmers, and his reaction to the malcontents was lovely. As for Regi's curiosity about the faery wife--well, I love it, even if Regi finds himself wanting to strangle Pippin in return.

And I don't blame him for wishing he could talk to Merry and Pippin right now--he certainly deserves some good positive reassurance right now.

Author Reply: Glad the part with the farmers and those not happy with him worked. Whenever I write stuff like that I worry whether or not it works. I don't feel like I write serious, political type conversations well.

I promise Regi will at least get a crumb of information about the faery wife story. :)

Thanks for readying a reviewing. It is very much appreciated.

He could put up with the insults to himself, he’d been hearing them for years, but he was not taking having Aragorn’s character demeaned well.

I love that. One of my favorite parts of ROTK is when the hobbits return to the Shire and Pippin speaks in defense of Frodo.

Tooks have always been a discontented lot. They have curiosity and nosiness in large quantities and they have to exercise it somehow.

What a delightful summary of how the Tooks differ from other hobbits. Nicely done.

Author Reply: Thanks for the review, Shirebound.

I always have believed that Pippin was very tolerant of most things but he would not put up with anyone saying or doing anything that would hurt people he cared about in any way.

One of my favorite moments in ROTK is when Pippin stands up to the bullies in front of the closed Green Dragon. He really shows the person he has grown into at that moment and I think Frodo was very proud of him.

Tooks really are a different breed from other hobbits. I really do believe that there was something in their ansestry that sets them apart from all the others. Maybe it's just the stronger Fallowhide strain, but I think there's something more to it.

Thanks again for the review and the complements. I'm so enjoying being back with the hobbits and hobbity writers.

A very lovely chapter! I especially liked Eglantine passing on the title of "the Took". I, too, think that the "Lalia years" would have left an impact on the Tooks, and left a lot of widows wary of being tarred with the same brush if they sought to hang on to the family headship to which they were entitled.

I do hope we get to see Strider's letter to Pippin--I am sure it is filled with love, encouragement and good advice.

Author Reply: I have written some things that would explain just why Eglantine has a special dislike for all things Lalia related. I hope to post that story at some point. I think the Tooks would feel the sam about a widow holding the family headship as they feel about wheeled chairs.

Yes. We will see Strider's letter. Merry just wants to find a time to give it to Pippin when he knows that Pippin can read it and ponder it without interruption.

Thanks for the review.

That's a beautifully conceived and written ceremony. I especially appreciated the references to "another step on the path to healing" and "Today we take that step into the future that Paladin was afraid to take.” And what a true reminder that one Age has ended and another begun, to adjust the oath to show that the King has at last returned.

Author Reply: Thanks, Shirebound.

I'm glad the ceremony worked. I was kind of nervouse about that. Fortunately for me, I had an unplanned day off work and was able to put a little more thought and effort into it than I might have had I written it at another time. As it was, I still forgot the witnesses and the red ink until the other night when I was reading someone else's stories and saw something about the witnessing of documents. I had run back and add seven Tooks to the story. Coming up with names was a challenge.

Thanks for the review and glad you liked the idea of a new age making it's way into Shire traditions.

At last the Shire has the kind of Thain it ought to have had years earlier! Lovely! And love the way the chapter ends!

Author Reply: Thanks so much, Larner.

I almost put the ball in a chapter by itself but thought it wasn't long enough to make a true chapter and it sounds like I made the right choice.

I'm hoping I can keep true to my vision of Pippin as more wise than many think, compassionate and with an appreciation of his homeland and how it fits into a larger world.

Thank again for reading and reviewing.

Awwww. I do love your Pippin and Diamond together. I hope this story will feature many little scenes like this one.

Interesting ceremony. The exchange of rings, and the relative weight of the rings, hits home.

It sounds just like Strider to have anticipated this day, and prepared for it!

Too tired to say more. Thank you for a lovely bedtime chapter.

Author Reply: Glad to supply a bedtime story for you. :)

I figured that as the heir, Pippin had to a signet of some sort but that the one the Thain actually wore was more elaborate and would therefore weigh more. It also was a nice simble of how much responsibility he's taking on.

I'm loving my Pip and Di more every day. I'm getting to really play with them and their relationship a lot lately because while I'm working on this story, I'm also writing the siquel to "To Have of Have Not" and watching them grow is great fun.

Thanks so much for the review. I'm glad that, even tired, you were willing to post something. :)

Good reasons to have a fluttery stomach, and to rely on Merry and Diamond to see him readied for the investiture. And that threat by Diamond to Merry was masterly!

Author Reply: LOL! Diamond and Estella together are every bit the match of their husbands. I'm going to have to think about writing something that features them. That could be fun. Thanks for the inspiration.

I think that if he didn't have Merry and Diamond to hold him down, Pippin would have run for the hills long ago.

Hah! Good thing he woke up when he did, or she might have next been pouring the water on him rather than in the basin!

"So far, not any different than it felt to be the wife of the heir, but I expect that will change beginning today."
I love your practical Diamond! She makes me grin!

A few felt that his connections with the outside world were not to be trusted and others thought him unnatural, with his great height and fair hair. A perfect description of hobbits' common attitude!

I would love to have heard Gandalf tell the true story!

(and I see that Merry is as practical as Diamond, in his own way)

I also know that you are one of the most intelligent people I know. You can see your way through a problem faster than almost anyone; so fast, in fact, that many people don't realize that you've thought something through before you act. They see it as impulsive. I see it as quick-witted. Sometimes you do act without thought...
Ah, Merry! You know your cousin so well. This fits so well with Pippin as JRRT wrote him. (And I love Merry's wise advice.)

...did I mention how I love Merry's wise advice?

Diamond makes me grin! (As I think I mentioned)

Looking forward to the next installment! Thanks!

Author Reply: Your comments have made my day a lot brighter.

Thank you so much for liking the way I'm writing the characters.

Merry knows Pippin better than he knows himself, and the opposite is true.

Diamond is as strong as they comes in most things. She can give as good as she gets with her husband. They both are stubborn Tooks and know it and they both have an amazing sense of humor and playfulness. They may lose sight of that sometimes but they always regain it.

As for the story about the Took ancestor, I plan to tell it in full in another story that I hope to eventually post here. I am also going to get an abridged version in this story I think. Regi needs some explanation aftterall.

Thanks again for reading and encouraging me.

A good chapter that lays out the difficulties Pippin will be facing as he takes office. He's going to have challenges both inside and outside the Tooklands, and face those who doubt him.

Merry reminded him that he has more resources available to him than he thinks, and there are more than even Merry mentions. Yes, there's the Master of Buckland and the Mayor of the Shire, but as Diamond reminds them, she and Estella are allies as well. And though "outside connections" may be frowned upon, the friendship of the King of Arnor and Gondor is nothing shabby. If nothing else he's learned by example about leadership.

I can't help but wonder about Eglantine; did she precede or survive her husband, I wonder? I'm sure we will learn the answer soon!

Author Reply: Oh, Pippin is going to have some challenges hit him head-on soon, but he's more up to it than even he knows.

As for Eglantine, you'll find out in the next chapter. :)

And you are right, he has some of the best allies anyone could ask for, both in and out of the Shire.

Thanks for reading and reviewing.
