Smoke & Mirrors  by Lialathuveril 118 Review(s)

Oh, Eomer. You need to learn to control your temper. Every time he might get Lothiriel to open up, he ruins the moment. But it is fun to watch him floundering. Lothiriel is very clever in securing his men's loyalty. If he ever gets on the wrong side of Lothiriel his men will defend her ;-).

Author Reply: It's fun to write him floundering too ;-) And LOL, that would be an amusing scene if his men took her side against him for annoying her!

Oh well done Lothíriel - and now you have people around you who not only admire you, but are coming to really like you as well.

And Éomer really should ask her who she 'sees' - but I can understand why he doesn't.

Author Reply: Yes, she's settling in nicely in Rohan, isn't she. I have to admit it's fun writing a story about their domestic life as a married couple!

Poor Eomer... he is well and truly besotted - just doesn't know it yet. You don't get scared for someone and can't be jealous of something you if you truly don't care! I would give good money to be a fly on the wall the next time he sees Eowyn - she'll see right through him and tell him so. :-)

I love the way you're writing this - I can totally feel Eomer's frustration and the building tension of the unknowing and growing desire to know; you're doing that so well! I really want to see what's on the inside of Lotheriel too (would love to see something from her POV for this whole time - hint, hint). Poor guy...

Author Reply: Hi Lyana,
sadly Eowyn is too busy in Ithilien at the moment, but they will get a visit from a loving family member sometime in the next few chapters ;-)

As for writing from Lothiriel's POV, I'm afraid I rather like the uncertainty in the reader's mind when we only get Eomer's side of the story (a bit like real life, I suppose, as we never know what people truly think). However, her thoughts and motives should become clearer with time.

Oh, but he DOES have the habit of shooting himself in his foot, doesn't he? Heh! She is proving a most intelligent lady and fully suitable to her role as Queen of Rohan. He just needs to get over his jealousy of her lost infatuation.

Author Reply: Yes, he did put his foot in, didn't he ;-D

But of course to get over being jealous, you first have to admit to yourself that you care. And I think Eomer is not quite there yet...

LOL! Eomer has been skillfully managed and he just now gets a glimpse of it. He really has a lot to learn about his wife. Finding the key to Lothiriel will not be easy. She seems to have made some bad experiences in her previous life and trust will not come easily.

Author Reply: Yes, you could say she's locked herself in and thrown away the key - and as you said, it won't be easy and take a lot of patience to get through.

Lothiriel is full of surprises. Eomer will underestimate her at his peril.

Author Reply: Too true! He's only slowly starting to realise what he's bagged for a queen ;-)

It is good to see him actually wanting to see more of her as a real person not just a capable queen; nice that he is beginning to get those glimpses too. I loved the conversation about him being easy to please.

I did worry that he was really going to undo any work he had already done to get to know her when he was so angry in case she was hurt but, good lad, he managed to say the right things - I hope she ponders them a little later.

And how astute of him to realise he might also be being manipulated - and I hope he realises what a compliment this is to her!

Author Reply: Hi Wombat,
yes, his perception is changing from 'capable housekeeper and queen' to seeing her as a person. It's a first step, isn't it.

However, you know my technique: two steps forward, one step back ;-D

It would appear that she has managed to get under his skin. Now, for him to reciprocate! And if he's being managed, I think he is finding even more to admire in her. Heh!

Author Reply: Hi Larner,
yes, it looks like Eomer's resolution to look at her as only a suitable queen is fast eroding, isn't it ;-)

Eomer is such a gentleman, Lothiriel is lucky. I'm not surprised she wanted to be in the dark. Loved Eomer thinking of his horses!

Author Reply: I always thought that even if it was not a love match, Eomer would be kind and considerate of his wife. And luckily he had the idea with the blood lines ;-)

I like Faramir and Eowyn here. I worry too that Lothiriel is just too controlled.

Author Reply: Yes, she's very controlled. And I'm afraid it will take a while until she'll begin to relax.
