I am SO loving this story! The characters are well thought out and very 3 dimensional. The story line is believable and yet very suspenseful. More! MORE! More! Make more stories of young Estel too. Thanks

Just when things seemed to be going in the right direction...now Estel falls into a ravine. I wonder what Dorhaur will think when he gets back from his watch...

And oh, where oh where are those much adored brothers of his? It makes for a really good story, but I do pity poor young Estel...

Author Reply: Dorhaur is probably just bemused by the entire encounter ... 'what now?'

They're coming! To be fair, he's not making it easy on them with all the moving around. Still, they're definitely moving faster than he is... And yes, I suspect Estel will be happy sticking pretty close to the House and his family for a while after this.

Not a fun outing, I must say. Sleepwalking can be tiresome--I used to do it as a child, although my usual route was from my bed, down the stairs, and through dining room and kitchen to the bathroom, then back to bed. If Mom hadn't seen me do it countless times I would never have known.

But, sleeprunning? Now, that takes talent! Heh! But he ought to have left signs Dorhaur can follow.

Love the comment about how Dorhaur hopes his younger siblings praise him behind his back as much as Estel does his brothers. If he only knew who those brothers were....

Author Reply: I haven't actually sleepwalked, but my niece has. When she was at camp she actually left their cabin -- luckily someone heard the door close and went after her. Wouldn't be fun to run into any raccoons or skunks or any other nocturnal critters while asleep, or trip over a rock ... or fall into a ravine.

Oh yes, no covering his tracks here. Dorhaur should have no trouble ...

Goodness, this lad does need looking after, and no mistake! I hope his longed-for reunion with loved ones (any of this loved ones!) comes soon, before he loses hope or gets more lost!

Author Reply: By this point, the poor kid is just kind of getting swept along with events as they happen ... His people are hard on his trail, never fear. He keeps moving around on them, though, he's not making it terribly easy ... :-P

You know, there's a really nice sense of reality to this--a dense weaving of detail in setting and character insight and reaction. The stuff about the rabbit hunt added to my trust that this woods and this boy were real. He fits into his world. I used to love doing research on things like archery. My beta had to restrain me from dumping every little interesting fact I learned into the story.

Hm. So was the dream just random? Or are the twins really in Archet? I can't remember where Estel tried to leave a message to say he'd be. I'll have to go back and look.

Author Reply: Thanks so much. It's funny you say that -- this chapter (and especially that part) was very concrete in my mind. I could see it and hear it. It was very peaceful for me, too ... before the wacked-out dream kicked in. I knew there was going to be a dream, but I honestly didn't know it would be like that until it got going, and I knew Estel was going to sleepwalk, but the falling into the ravine thing was a bit of a surprise ... :-P

Perhaps the captain was called away unexpectedly by his friends the Sons of Elrond to help locate their lost charge? Heh.

I enjoyed Estel taking the opportunity to show off his hunting skills. And a good meal to boot. But oh dear, now he finds himself in another predicament...

Author Reply: Yes, this was a good opportunity to get his feet back under him -- the first part of the chapter, anyway. :-P Yes, this is a bit of a predicament ... but I'm sure he'll come out on top here too. :-)

Loving this story! I can't wait for the rest! I feel so bad for Estel, just wanting to go home, and having to rely on so many strangers in the hope of getting there.

That was a rather rough introduction to "his own," not that Estel really knows it at the moment. Still, it was so beautifully written that Estel instinctively trusts Dorhaur and that he has better chances of getting home if he goes with him.

And then another twist! Oh, but I hope Monday comes soon...

Thank you so much for this beautiful story. I always look forward to the next "installment" and I can't wait to know what will happen next to Estel.

I do wonder, though, where his Twin brothers, and Glorfindel, are and what they are doing. Not to mention Elrond and Gilraen...

But since the story seems to be told from Estel's perspective, we may not know just yet. Maybe in some epilogues, or even a separate story later? (wink wink...hint, hint...)

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm so glad you're enjoying it ... :-)

Estel will want to know what his family's been up to as well, when they're all together again, so chances are we'll all find out at least some of it ... ;-)

The poor kid has already been through so much. But I'm a bit surprised that he hasn't already received training in hiding his own tracks and thus feel more certain about his ability to slip away and basically stay away, with Dorhaur knowing only he's likely to head east.

At least he is indeed in the care of people of integrity, whether he and Darlo realize it or not.

Author Reply: Oh, I think he's certain about his ability to stay away. He wouldn't even be planning this otherwise. :-) He's just maybe not as sure what chances he will have to actually duck out without attracting attention -- he doesn't know how good Dorhaur is, or how closely he'll be watched. At this point, though, he probably isn't sure about much of anything, whether it's something that falls in his wheelhouse or no ...

Dorhaur is so very Ranger-ish! He's all toughness but mistrust, but his honor and principles shine through enough that Estel sees them, even though he's still cautious. Not a bad first introduction to the Dunedain and Rangers for the kid. I like the fact that Estel makes his own decision about what happens next.

I begin to believe that you were in fact taken from your home, wherever that may be.” Estel drew a long, shaky breath and remained still. After a moment, Dorhaur added, “It must be so. If you believe that the two of us can simply pick up and walk off into the wilds of Eriador for such a journey with nothing but my pack and a Hobbit’s picnic lunch, you couldn’t possibly have survived on your own for any length of time.”

That made me laugh.

Author Reply: It made me laugh too -- it's just the thing to completely offend a twelve-year-old proud of his survival skills ... :-P

I like Dorhaur ... I wasn't quite sure what he would be like when I started writing him, and he just sort of filled in the blanks himself. That sense of humor I wasn't necessarily expecting. :-)
