Beyond Imladris  by PSW 134 Review(s)

Another lovely chapter!

I like the idea of Estel relating the Ley of Luthienn to the small children!

Author Reply: Thank you! Yes, I would think it would be like telling The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast or something similar to our children -- adventure and romance, don't you know ... :-)

Thanks so much for reading and commenting. I'm glad you're enjoying!

I got really excited when Estel spotted the Halflings. Between them and the family Estel stumbled on, he's met kind people who can maybe help him. I don't know how much Halflings in general knew about Imladris. I've never looked at that part of canon.

Your tobacco farming sounded good to me. Research into stuff like that is fun. Then it's tempting to share every bit of stuff you find because surely everyone wants to know all this interesting stuff!

Estel is doing very well, given his situation. We'll see how it goes.

Author Reply: I know, it was fun to get them in there. I'm not sure the Shire Hobbits knew that much in general, based on the beginning of FotR ... seems like Bilbo and Frodo did, but I'm not sure that the others for the most part even cared (is the impression I get). But Elves did cross the Shire occasionally, so who knows? In any case, with these Hobbits being from outside the Shire, probably all bets are off. :-) We'll see ...

Estel has at least an idea of what ought to be done for Ferrier, at least, and got the help the man needs for him. Love Cora and Sander and their desire to hear a story, and of course love the story he chooses to share with them.

Author Reply: Yes, of course it had to be Beren and Luthien. :-) I enjoyed that bit as well, was good to give Estel a chance to think about something else for a while ...

I was as happy to see the hobbits as Estel! I feel so badly for Ferrier, but at least he's in good hands now.

Author Reply: I knew you'd like that! I was rather happy about it myself ... :-)

I liked the gritty reality of the scene in the inn. It must feel like another world to Estel. It's funny to think of him as Strider years down the road.

The innkeeper and his niece felt quite alive--people who are as kind as they can afford to be but with problems of their own.

Author Reply: Yes, Strider will be spending a lot of time in places like this! :-) And yes, poor Estel is feeling so lost right now -- the Men of Eriador are so different from Elves of any kind, which is all he knows...

Well, if anyone from Rivendell comes this far they will have a clue to go by, at least. Too bad Ferrier is too far gone mentally to realize he needs to get physical help at the very least. And Estel could only try, after all. I am glad Kerra is willing to help the little she can.

Author Reply: Yes, he can only do what he can do. He has no basis by which to know how Men will react to pretty much anything at this point, so it's all just guesswork for him....

I was drawn completely into this chapter and forgot for a moment that I wasn't in that inn with Estel! I'm enjoying this very much.

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm so glad. :-) I'm enjoying it too... ;-)

I thought you were probably setting us (or really Estel) up for some time with Ferrier! You did a nice job of showing how Estel gradually wakes up, feels physical sensations, and finally realizes what's happened. I like the voice of Glorfindel in his head, because it explains how this kid is so savvy. I also like that the "kidnapper" is sympathetic to some degree. Estel better hope the guy doesn't collapse completely because then he'll really have problems on his hands.

The last little "Please, come find me" is touching. He's doing ok but he'd really, really like someone who loves him to come along now.

Author Reply: Yes, he really, really would ...

Estel at this age is tricky. I tend to think that he's more advanced than most kids his age would be, given his lifetime of one-on-one tutoring with a bunch of highly-trained and experienced Elves who are fully committed to seeing him not only stay alive but come out on top. That said, he's also twelve, scared, and (for the most part) alone. I'm sure that quite a few of his decisions in the foreseeable future will not necessarily end up being the best choice he could have made.

As for Ferrier ... well, Estel's training with Elrond may be a good thing here too, but I suspect he's not nearly as far along in that and won't be able to do much more than slap a bandaid on it and yell for help, if it comes to it. We'll see ...

Now, this I hadn't anticipated at all! Definitely a frightening situation for the youth, but one he ought to be able to deal with in the end.

Author Reply: He'll definitely learn a lot in the attempt, anyway, even if he doesn't always get it all right ... ;-) Thanks for reading and commenting!

Estel took a long, deep breath. He was not home, and now he had to deal with what he had, not what he wished he had.

Very wise indeed. I like the inner 'conversation' with Glorfindel. Hopefully this journey will turn out well for both Estel and Ferrier.

Author Reply: Thanks for commenting! Yes, that's the hope, that this will turn out well for all. I truly wanted this to be a story with no 'bad guy', but only sympathetic characters from whom Estel might learn things differently than he would at home -- or things that he might not learn at all until he finally managed to make his way into the world of Men. Of course he may not see it that way at the time...but Aragorn is a naturally compassionate person and I don't think he would be able to help but extend it at any opportunity...
