Worth waiting for!

I like your Elrond more and more.
Darhaur is great too.

Wondering if his son will be allowed to come to Rivendell to give Estel a playmate? Probably too risky.

Hope the other Ranger gets his comeuppance!

Thank you for this lovely tale!

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm happy you liked it. I really enjoyed writing Elrond in this chapter as well -- in fact, I have really enjoyed Elrond throughout the story. It has been fun to take him out of his usual environment and 'watch' him interact w people he wouldn't normally have a chance to speak with. Over the years, I have come to love his character...

Thanks so much for reading and for your comments!

(As for the rest...we'll see... :-)

Yes, double review for this chapter! But I've been missing this story so I just re-read the whole thing straight through. Wanted to let you know how great it flows -- what a ride! Looking forward to more. Happy New Year!

Author Reply: Thanks! :-) I'm glad to hear it flows -- I often go back and read my stories all the way through when I'm done...both to get an idea of their flow and because it's almost like reading a new story for me sometimes. It's definitely not the same reading them as when I'm writing them....

Sorry for the delay. :-( It seemed that the muse was still exhausted from the holidays last weekend, and a family party today -- but I'm still in top of it, never fear! Hopefully I'll have a new chapter out by midweek...

Thanks so much for reading and all your faithful support, it means a lot! :-)

Ah, but he is clever, hopefully clever enough. Now, are Elrond and Dorhaur still there? They would be the needed buffer between the boy and Baradhald.

Author Reply: Yes, he definitely needs a buffer. I have a feeling ;-) that there's going to be a line drawn pretty soon... Elrond will certainly need an explanation for why Estel chose to climb up the side of the hill rather than head down like he said he would, and once that's out...

Thanks as always for reading and commenting!

Happy Christmas to you as well PSW. thank you for another great chapter and indeed an awesome story.

Poor Estel, growing up is already hard enough. *** giggles*** why does it feel like he's about to get into another predicament?

Author Reply: Well, at the very least Elrond and Dorhaur are going to be at the top wondering what he's doing... :-P We'll see, though...

Estel is absolutely right that being in a place makes learning its history easy and more fun. In his case, of course, it's also great practical preparation for his future. His wish to be an Elf like the people he loves and admires seems natural to me, even though it's sad. Elrond handled that well. His half-Elven state must give him some insight into Estel's struggle.

I also liked that Estel has camp chores to do. We'll see how things work out with the Rangers who are soon to depart.

Author Reply: I can't see how he would grow up as he has and *not* wish to be an Elf, at least at some point. Kids don't like to be different.... I suspect that raising him is subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) different than raising Elrond other children, both because of nature and nurture, as it were...

"you must strive to be the best of us."

And so he did. I wonder if this camping spot is the same that Aragorn and the hobbits used? *beams*

Merry Christmas to you, and thank you for this marvelous tale!

Author Reply: Probably. If it's good enough for Glorfindel, after all... ;-)

Thanks so much for reading and all your comments -- I appreciate your support!

Wow! This chapter is certainly the unexpected deep cut of the album, if you will. The conversation with Estel about wanting to be an Elf was incredible, both from Elrond and Dorhaur's sides. Lots and lots of things unsaid. And now I'm dying to know what they are speaking privately about! Argh, curse you, evil author. I'm also apprehensive about the end of the chapter, and will try yet again to endure the days without knowing ;) Merry Christmas!

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm glad you liked it -- I was curious at the beginning of it how things would flow, but happy w the way it turned out. :-) I just don't see how it would be possible to be raised as Estel was without feeling this way at least a little bit ... he's got nothing at all to compare, poor kid...

Poor kid, being alternately fascinated and bored, realizing there are other children with whom he could play, but whom he'd most likely never see again, or not for so many years they'd most likely not recognize one another; losing his count....

He is continuing to learn, however, and is now seeing his ancestors' tower, even if it is but in ruins now. One day he will know this region so very well!

I wonder if they do have prairie dogs in Eriador? I love the thought of seeing them along the way.

Author Reply: It's definitely been a confusing and back-and-forth couple of weeks for him -- I'm sure his moods and patience are all over the place at this point. It will be good for him to get home and back to normal for a while. But yes, that was part of what I was thinking when I was writing -- someday he'll know this whole are like the back of his own hand. :-)

I loved the prairie dog idea too -- as soon as it occurred to me, I was like, 'yep, they're totally going into this chapter' ... :-P

See, I told Dorhaur he was wrong and his captain was a fool. It's totally believable that he'd be given some authority because of his family though, since the Dunedain use inherited rule.

I loved Estel's enthusiasm in talking about the other boys he played with. There doesn't seem to be any way around that though.

One of the fun things fanfic allows a writer to do is flash bits of canon in the story like inside jokes. So Estel thinks of walking everywhere, or maybe "striding". LOL And we get a glimpse of Amon Sul.

Author Reply: Yes, I thought of you as I was writing that. Pretty much anyone who has a chance to spend any real time with the man ...

Estel is of course all over the marble game -- he's a twelve year old who just learned a new game with a bunch of new friends (and throw in that the whole 'new friend' thing isn't common for him). I can't imagine that the adults in his life haven't thought of all he will be missing in order to be safe and regret his losses, even if there really is no better way.

Ah welcome back, I really missed this last week! I'm very much enjoying the different perspectives, and loved it was Dorhaur who knew what Estel was dying to talk about regarding Staddle. Still thinking (hoping!) Baradhald's behavior will blow up in his face...

Author Reply: Thanks! I missed it too. :-)

I figure, Dorhaur has kids close enough to that age that he's bound to be fairly attuned to most of the alternative motives they've got swirling around in those brains of theirs...

It's a good thing Baradhald wasn't the one who stumbled across Estel, that's for sure. :-P
