An Unexpected Adventure [IN HIATUS]  by KathyG 332 Review(s)

Ah, and so Gandalf returns! That's my favorite part of this chapter - especially the messages for Boromir and Kevin! Most intriguing...

(Really, Gwaihir, don't joke about dropping Gandalf! Not funny!)

Also, I forgot to mention...Faran, hmm? *grins* I wonder why that name sounds familiar. Another coincidence? :)

So there's Shadowfax! And the sundered Fellowship continue on their separate ways - to the Entmoot, to Edoras, and though we haven't seen it yet...to Mordor. *shivers*

Author Reply: Yes, only you won't read about the journey to Mordor in our story. Any information that the children gain about Mordor, and about Frodo and Sam's journey there, will be acquired secondhand. You will read about the journeys to the Entmoot, Edoras, Helm's Deep, and Minas Tirith, though!

Author Reply: Glad you like the messages for our two extra hunters! DF

The interlude in Rivendell was brief but well done :) I like that Steve got to translate the map so he could read the place names, and that their preparing to leave is going well.

I'm so glad that the Five Hunters (I know, I said four, I forgot Kevin! *sigh*) are continuing on apace and that the prisoners are now safe with Treebeard!

Author Reply: Yeah, me, too! Thank goodness Saruman failed in his plot to imprison the hobbits and get his hands on the Ring.

Yes, thankfully, Steve and Gail's preparations are going well. They're learning a great deal in the process.

I'm so glad that Boromir survived! I do hope that remains the case, and that the *Four* Hunters will catch up with Merry, Pippin, Joey and Jennifer soon! Good for Jennifer, leaving signs behind for the remaining members of the Fellowship to follow! This story is really exciting!

Author Reply: Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying it, and so is Dreamflower, I know. Yes, we wanted Boromir to have a happier fate than the one he got to have in the book and the movies. Unfortunately, not all of the characters who die in the book will survive in our story.

Author Reply: Actually, it's Five Hunters, this time. And we are glad he survived this time, too. He'll have a bigger role coming up.

Jennifer's a smart young lady, and though she's terrified, she's also determined to take care of her brother and her friends as best she can. DF

*grin* And is it Gail who sees the light then, about how important it is for her baby to learn these lessons so early? I love the parts with Kaylee in Imladris, and now with her parents and Megan, showing them all the things she's learned!

But it does make me wonder where the girls will end up going - along with their parents or remaining behind somewhere? Hmm...I'll just have to see, won't I? :)

Bilbo's gentle rebukes and mild sarcasm made me laugh. Soup made from scratch is definitely better than soup from a can, I'm sure! And soon Gail will indeed catch up to Kaylee.

Author Reply: You'll find out soon enough! =) And yes, Gail is learning some much-needed lessons about her daughter, and about parenting.

Ah, and the McClouds will be following their children in company with the Elven warriors - good! Well, we'll have to see how that goes. But first they'd better train! What will befall Kaylee and Meghan then, I wonder?

And the Fellowship has been broken indeed - not only Merry and Pippin, but Joey taken, and Jennifer running off to save them all? Well, that's what Jennifer saw in Galadriel's Mirror after all, though not what she would do about it - and now we know.

Author Reply: Yes, we do. As for what Jennifer ends up doing, you'll soon know. I agree that Steve, in particular, will have to train first!

I loved the songs here! I recognized "On The Banks of the Brandywine" and of *course* "Row, Row, Row, Your Boat", LOL. The sea chanty Boromir sang reminded me of a few I've learned, and my mind set a tune to it, though I couldn't remember the original words that go with it. The Argonath sound majestic indeed, no wonder the children were impressed!

Poor Boromir, the Ring has been working on him - and on the rest of the Fellowship. At least they've reached Parth Galen safely, though I know they won't all leave it in safety! The time for the breaking of the Fellowship is here. *hugs them all*

Author Reply: Yes, it is, and you pretty much know what's going to follow!

Awww, yay, I really love how the McClouds are settling in. Steve and Gail have so much to learn, but all the Elves and Bilbo are willing to help them, and Eledhwen's been doing so much to help Kaylee. Gail's realization that Eledhwen has been Kaylee's nanny struck me as funny, for some reason - I can't really figure out why. Maybe I was trying to picture her as an Elven version of Mary Poppins? More her than Nanny McPhee, I guess, LOL! :)

Author Reply: LOL! Well, being an Elvish nanny, I reckon she has her own brand of magic. =)

Yep, the McClouds are definitely settling in. They're all going to return to Oregon changed people!

Well, the McClouds have reunited - at least the parents and their youngest! (And Lucy, of course!) And it seems I was right about Narnia time! Heh :) I thought so.

I'm so glad Kaylee impressed her parents, and I sympathize with the McClouds for not feeling quite at ease. It wasn't much easier for their children earlier! But they're settling in as well as they can, I think. I don't know how Kaylee will feel about soup from a can from now on! That winter soup does sound pretty good - it's cold today and I could do with some soup for lunch myself. Is there a recipe for it? :)

Author Reply: Yep, you were right!

As for whether there's a recipe for the soup, you'll have to ask Dreamflower. I dare say she can tell you if there is.

A very interesting encounter for Jennifer, with the Mirror of Galadriel! The Lady's words are wise indeed, and it's exciting that (most of) the rest of the family will be coming to Middle-earth too!

As for why the family's there after all this time...I'm thinking of Narnia time. Perhaps it really hasn't been all that long in our world since they left?

I'm excited for Kaylee, too, meeting Halbarad! And her little gift...the stone hanging just over Halbarad's heart in that special pouch. Hmm, I wonder...but I'll keep my musings to myself. The Battle of the Pelennor is a long way off yet.

Author Reply: You'll find out when you read the chapter in which the parents arrive! And yes, Galadriel did well to advise Jennifer as she did.

As for Kaylee and Halbarad? Well, you'll find out when the time comes!

Oh, I love how the McCloud children and the rest of the Fellowship are acquainting themselves with Lothlorien! It's good to see Gimli and Legolas becoming closer, too. The archery lessons, and Joey's sling practice are definitely good for them! But Joey definitely needs to work on his aim! That could have gone very badly...

Author Reply: Yeah, no kidding! Fortunately, he's got 4 very skilled hobbits to teach him how.

Author Reply: The scene with Joey's slingshot lessons was one of my favorite ones to write! Thanks! DF
