I absolutely love this story! It's very cleverly written and the twist in the middle really made me smile. It's so sweet, and poignant too, to see them behaving no differently than two lads on an overnight trip, even though they're far from it - and I love that Pippin has a real reason for wanting to sleep next to Merry, and that he still needs his older cousin to comfort him.
I especially love this:
“That is one of my very favorite things to be, Pip,” Merry said, hugging his cousin. “Oh, and don’t worry that I will tell this to anyone. At my age, I will have likely forgotten it before we stop for lunch tomorrow. I can hardly be expected to remember this all the way to Gondor.”
Just wonderful. Thank you! :)
Author's reply
Even after all of that time had passed I do believe that both of them would still have some rather frightening memories and I do believe that the Palantir would have been the hardest for Pippin to forget. So glad that you enjoyed this one and that was one of my favorite lines as I was writing this one. I love it when Merry plays protector. Also pleased to see that the little surprise in the middle worked out as I had it planned.

That was very sweet! I liked the banter and easy between the two. Pippin being frightened and wanting Merry to just be his older cousin was too cute! The reason for Pip's unease being because of where they were camped made since. Merry first teasing he would tell everyone about it then admitting he probably wouldn't be able to remember it was great. Then Merry talking about the only way he could defent them made me laugh! It was very touching and made me want to cry, I had to refrain as there are too many people about ;) Thank you for the sweetness!

Thank you so much! I always look forward to your reviews and I am very pleased that you enjoyed this one. It was my first try at writing them when they are much older, but I didn't want to think that they had lost their sense of fun even then. Glad it made you laugh!

This is a beautifully written story and a point in time I've not seen much written about. Most well done!!!!!
Author's reply
Thank you! I usually see them written at the point that one of them dies, but I can't do that. I like to think that when they left the Shire to go to Rohan and Gondor they still had a few adventures ahead of them, both of them together. I am playing with the idea of trying to write more on this subject if all goes well, if not, I think leaving them at this point suits me just fine. Alive and well! Thanks for reviewing!

What a sweet story! It's lovely to know that the gentle, teasing ways of hobbits never leave them.
“Only just now, could you do me a favor and just be my older cousin, Merry who looks after me when I’m frightened?” Pippin requested, meekly sounding very like he had when he had been no more than a teen.

Thanks so much. I like to think that those two were teasing and supporting one another all through their lives. It just makes me happy to think that. Seems that you agree with me on that.Thank you for the review!

Aaaww...you made me tear up.
When the story first opened I was a bit uncertain whether it was pre-Quest, or during the Quest--but if the latter, where was everyone else? Then it began to dawn on me just about the time you dropped in Merry's age...
I love this. It is so sweet, and the banter is so funny and dear, and so like our Brandybuck and Took throughout their lives.
*sniffle*
Author's reply
Oh, good you couldn't tell. I was actually hoping that their ages would come as a surprise in this one. I was trying to show that in spite of the passing years, Merry and Pippin were still much the same inside, if not on the outside. This is the first time I have dared to write them in their later lives. I am glad that you enjoyed it. At least the sniffling won't be likely to wake anyone. Thanks for the lovely review.

· Chapter 23: Jingle Bells
I am so sorry that I missed this adorable story!! I know what happened, but I'll save it for a PM. This was so clever and cute! Did you wear bells as a baby? I wonder how many women will now go out and buy tiny bells and sew them to their baby's nappy! It sort of reminds me of a little red tricycle we kids shared as preschoolers; the wheels squeaked. My sister and I asked our mother why she never oiled the axles. She said if she did that, she'd never know where we were. Clever. Your story is brilliant!
Pippinfan
Author's reply
I didn't wear bells, but I remember them on the baby shoes of so many little ones in the past. Do you remember the stride-rite white baby shoes with the jingle bells that were tied into the laces? That is how this story came about. I like your mom's plan with the squeaky wheels. I had to had the bells sewen into Pippin pants because of a lack of little shoes to put them onto. Thanks for the review!

Thank you for the review and for reading these. From time to time I just write a little silly Merry and Pippin fiction and this is where I put them all.

lol! I can absolutely see the need to put bells on Pippin. A very sweet and enjoyable story!
Author's reply
I believe that it would have been very hard to keep up with a tiny Pippin at the stage where little ones love to explore. His curious nature and talent for trouble would have made him a major challenge and poor Merry had to have a life of his own, so bells were deffinately needed. Thank you for the review and I am very glad you enjoyed it!

LOL, Jinge bell Pippin! What an embarrassing - and therefore hilarious - childhood memory. Hope we get to see Pippin's revenge. :)
Author's reply
Glad that it made you laugh. Most childhood stories are embarrassing aren't they? I would imagine that poor Pippin had to suffer through a great many of them by being the youngest. Thanks for reviewing and Happy Holidays!

I just loved the level of Pippin teasing here. And the embarrassing tales of childhood.
It's delightful to see Frodo and Merry up to (mild) mischief together. I can just see the jingle bells name coming out at some appropriate moment on the quest!
Author's reply
I like stories with a bit of mischeif in them and I like to include Frodo now and again. I figure even at this age, he was up for a bit of harmless fun with Merry. Would have been very funny for that nickname to crop up along with the explanation for it on the quest. I am sure Pippin would not have been overly thrilled with that. Thanks for reviewing!

Oh...my...goodness. It is a _very_ good thing that I read this after all my 5th grade students were out of the building (I needed an imagination break after class) because I was giggling hard enough to make them question my sanity!
Wonderful characterization and dialogue - I could just hear and see this conversation in my mind. You do hobbits so very well.
Author's reply
Why, thank you very much! I am very glad that you enjoyed it. I sometimes worry that I am using too much dialogue. My characters, like me, talk way too much. LOL Good luck with the fifth graders and have a lovely holiday!

Oh, delightful!
And it was clever of you to keep adding more little elaborations to the basic story. I laughed so at little Pippin eating the bells, and Merry shaking him like a rattle, and then of course the "find Pippin" game.
Author's reply
I have play the find me game with little ones before and they love it. I always was amused by the way they would come to check on me if I didn't find them quickly enough. LOL A little child with bells on wouldn't stand a chance at hide'n' seek and so once the bells were off, I am sure Pippin had a great time hiding for the grown-ups.
Thanks for the review and I am glad you enjoyed this! Happy holidays!

I loved that! I like when you mix a present story with a past one and you do better than most! We use to put bells on our kittend because she was so tiny and we never knew where she was so we stepped on her! I have my own little cousins though who it would work splendidly if I tied bells to them! Much like Pippin and always into everything! I'll have to try it!
Merry's reaction to Pippin's jingling was great, falling out of the chair and everything I was laughing right along with him! Thanks for the fun!
Author's reply
Thank you! I had two stories in mind on this and so I put them together. I didn't think I should write two "jingle bells" stories. I have seen little children with bells in the laces of their shoes before and that was were the idea started. Since the Hobbits don't wear shoes, I just had the bells sewed to the clothing. Sounds like it worked great for keeping up with your kitten. Let me know how it works with the little cousins. Happy Holidays!

“What’s the matter, Pip?” Merry smirked. “Don’t you like the way that I’ve decorated you for Yule? You’re like a tiny Tookish sleigh. Very festive.”

*snort* Here you go *again*! I think your hobby is "make-dreamflower-laugh-in-the-middle-of-the-night!"
I think what I love the most about this tale is that Frodo is joining in with Merry to play a prank on Pippin. Not the usual turn of events, and so lovely to see him having fun with Merry--at Pippin's expense.
And I can so see him coaxing the little faunt onto his lap by calling him "little jingle bells". LOL!
Author's reply
I think since Frodo is the oldest and is supposed to have taught the others most of his tricks that it works well to let him in on the fun once in a while. I like a happy Frodo. I could also see him with Pip at that age calling the child "little jingle bells". I figure that now, Merry can use this to tease Pip with later.
I am enjoying my hobby very much and will probably try to play the "Make- Dreamflower-laugh-in-the-middle-of-the-night game" again. It is almost as much fun as "find Pippin"! Almost!

· Chapter 22: Concerning Ladders
LOL, well, what you do is, you get the ladder, and cut your paper into several thin strips, and then wrap the paper around each individual beam. It's a terror to unwrap. ;)
Cute, lovely, funny, angsty. This one had everything. And of course, my favorite Merry/Pippin moments are Pippin upset and Merry groveling for forgiveness. Really, Merry should have figured that out. It was the first thing that popped into my head. Well done, looking forward to more.
Author's reply
Next time, I will send Merry over so that you can clue him in. LOL So glad you enjoyed it. Oh, and now that I have heard exactly how one wraps a ladder, I do hope I never have to unwrap one. Pippin's joke may just backfire and he might have to spend all of Yule unwrapping the ladder. LOL (small plot bunny)

I loved this on Marigold's Challenges, too! The sweet relationship that Pippin and Merry have is like none other. Poor Pippin! Trouble always seems to find the poor lad no matter how hard he tries to avoid it. At least Merry is hobbit enough to admit his mistakes and apologizes for them. I'm looking forward to more of these precious gems! Take care.
