So, the stone is the key to their return. Teamwork is always a good idea. Perhaps it will bring them back home. At least I hope it will. Are they really seeing Beleg or is it just his fea? I guess I’ll just have to wait till next Monday to find out. Patience is not my strong suit so the wait will be hard, but well worth it.
Author's reply
Yes, they are really seeing Beleg in fëa... it's the only way he could get to where they are, but that will prove to be the key to their returning home, that and the pendant. At least you only have to wait a week... what if you had to wait a whole month! *grin*

Visitors - always coming when you don´t need them. Just when they made some progress with the pendant. Or is the pendant reacting to the appearing of Beren and his company?
But those two are shurely glad about some elven company, even it you could see through it.
I´m wondering how the pendant and its reaction is connected to Beren´s apperance and the return of all three to Valinor. If nothing else they are at least in a better mood thanks to the pendant.
I can´t wait to read how Glorfindel and Finrod will react to Beren´s story.
Author's reply
Actually it's Beleg... Beren is the Mortal who married Lúthien. *grin* Anyway, we'll see shortly what will happen to all three ellyn and how Beleg's presence and the pendant get Finrod and Glorfindel home.

Heh. I do so enjoy it when I'm right, lol...So in pops Beleg, in spirit if not in body. Of course Finrod doesn't "recognize" the Flame Imperishable. He was out jogging, after all! Well done, Fiondil. Can't wait for the next part!

I'm really curious as to how the pendant will help Finrod and Glorfindel in returning. Wonder if there are any living creatures, other than themselves, where Finrod and Glorfindel are... I really enjoyed the story so far and can't wait for more!
Author's reply
We'll see soon what the pendant's role in all this is. As far as I know there aren't any animal life in the 10th dimension at this time save for the two eves. All is potentiality in the 10th dimensino rather than reality at this point in time. That will change soon enough as described at the end of my tale i>The Last Messenger/i>.
Glad you are enjoying this story. Thanks for letting me know. I really appreciate it.

Overdressed for camping with the pendant on? *snicker* That's more like the Glorfindel we know - finally! Though I understand him - I'd leave something so valuable at home if I'd go on a camping trip, too.
Interesting - Glorfindel didn't truly knew what he was doing when he started to sing the Song of Power? The two are probably right that Eru had a hand in this. And I see they're under no illusions about a rematch *grin* In case they ever do one, they should at least go somewhere in the midst of a wasteland, far away from everyone else. Though it would be a pity to miss watching it ;-)
Anyway, it was good to see these two in better spirits for a change. It must have been truly hard for them.
Ah, I see we have finally catched up in time to the others! It was as I had guessed. Obviously they were concentrating on the pendant just when Ingwion, Beleg and the others did concentrate on them, drawing them together? Hm ... and if they now touch the pendant and concentrate on Ingwion ...? In any case, it has to be quite the shock for them to find Beleg's fëa with them so suddenly.
Need I to mention that I can't wait for the next chapter?
Author's reply
I don't think Glorfindel really knows just how powerful an Elf he really is, but he's learning.
As for the rest... next chapter will reveal all, I promise.

Aw ... poor Glorfindel! No admiring ellith -- that's the worst hardship of all!
Well, regardless how Glorfindel knew to make the Song of Power, it was apparently a good thing he *did*, or Finrod would have made mincemeat of him?
It looks like they're finally getting somewhere ... metaphorically speaking, anyway. And hopefully they've made progress toward getting somewhere in the *literal* sense as well.
It will be interesting to see what *else* they can do when concentrating on the pendant. If they can attract questing fëar, can they speak to others across dimensions?
"Neither ellyn sensed her presence" -- I believe that should be the singular "ellon."
"A warmth began to spread from his hand up his arm" -- The last we knew, Glorfindel was holding the pendant in his cupped hands. So did the warmth travel up only one arm, or both?
A design of flames -- the Flame Imperishable, Aulë's craft, warmth from the pendant.... Hm.
Author's reply
Thanks for pointing out the typos...they've been fixed.
We'll be seeing what else the pendant can do in the next chapter.
As for the desing on the pendant... Atar is sneaky, isn't he? *grin*

Hm, so Beleg did find his way to them, not quite what Orome had in mind when he called a Hunt! Perhaps Finrod and Glorfindal can find their way back by following Beleg's fea back to his hroa, once they figure out how to do it that is!:<) The 10th dimension is starting to get crowded!

Hm, think this raises more questions than it answers! Glorfindal does seem to have regressed a lot, what he is going through is not helping him either. Poor Elfling, one just wants to give him a cuddle and tuck him into bed with a stuffed toy and sing him Namo's lullaby! Finda needs a hug and an axe to chop some fire wood before he strangles Glorfi! That or a stiff drink! Eonwe is going to need a whole volume for Glorfindal at this rate!
Let's hope the pendant holds the key to the way back, they need to be home!

Finally a moment! And now the blocks are off, and memories can be retrieved. Oaths need to be reexamined and love fulfilled. Love Eonwe "needing" to bind a new book just for Glorfindel's oaths!
Author's reply
Now that the blocks are down (more or less since he still cannot see Eärendil's star), Glorfindel will be driven to find some answers (hence the title of this book). Whether he finds them in truth or is satisfied with what he finds remains to be seen.

Isn’t that the case with all children? You can only teach them so much. The rest they have to lean by trial and error. It looks like the Elves are not all that different from men in some respects.
Glorfindel’s meeting with Iluvatar was an extremely rare occurrence. He must be a very special Elf indeed.
I am most interested in finding out how they get back to their home.
Tari
Author's reply
We learn best by experience. Our mistakes are the only things we can truly call our own. And Elves, being created beings, just like Mortals (and Valar), are not perfect and so must learn by trial and error like the rest of us.
We will see how they finally get home very soon.

· Chapter 14: What the Elder King Revealed
Did I mention that I love your Eönwë? So he needs to bind another book nearly exclusively because of Glorfindel? *LOL*
That is why I love your Valar and Maiar – they are no remote, intimidating Gods, but rather ‚human’ and have so much humour.
Ah, finally we (and poor Glorfindel) got to know what exactly the Valar did and why. Hm ... to a certain degree it is understandable that they tried to protect Glorfindel from himself and his memories, though I am still not entirely happy with it. But it is really fascinating that he woke five times when he shouldn’t have and made this door reappear. No wonder the Valar are so often wrong with their predictions what he will do next when he is *that* unusual!
It will be interesting to watch the repercussions of all this; personally I’d love for Glorfindel to meet Eärendil. But Manwë and Finrod are right; first they have to concentrate on getting back to Aman proper.
And now I’ll be busy pondering of which use this pendant may be. I have an inkling how Beleg may help them, and now I have to fit the pendant into my theory ;)
Can’t wait for the next chapter, as usual!
Author's reply
I could never imagine the Valar and Maiar as remote semi-divine beings who use Elves and Mortals as playthings for their amusement. So I wrote them the way I hope they truly are... though still maintaining their 'otherness' from us Incarnates.
Glorfindel is unusual in many ways and while the Valar's solution was not without its problems it was the best they could come with at the time. Even they admit that Atar was not entirely happy with their decision but neither did ne explicity forbid it, probably knowing that ultimately the barriers would prove useless. What the ramifications of all this is will be the primary (though not exclusive) focus of the rest of the story, or at least that part of it dealing with Glorfindel.
We will see very soon just what properties the pendant has and how it and Beleg will help to see these two ellyn home.
Thanks for reviewing, I really appreciate it.

· Chapter 13: In Which Finrod Runs Away and Glorfindel Sails Away
"water so clear he could see to the very bottom. Light was all around but there was no sun. He wondered how the ship could move without sails to catch the breeze that smelled, not of salt, but of... something green, he decided, though he could not put a name to it. He did not feel any hunger but realized he was thirsty again, so he made his way aft to the barrel and drank some more water, feeling refreshed as he had never felt before.
Now the ship was sailing through a garden of water lilies, bright yellow against dark green lily pads. They did not seem to impede the ship which sailed through them with silent grace. And that was what Glorfindel began to notice — the absolute silence that surrounded him. There was not even the swish of waves hitting the side of the ship as it sliced through the water. He felt disinclined to speak out loud and tried to make as little noise as possible as he returned to the helm. "
A reference to the Chronicles of Narnia yes? A lovely lovely chapter. Ah, Glorfindel, you're such a troublemaker that even Atar gets directly inolved! *offers hugs*

· Chapter 13: In Which Finrod Runs Away and Glorfindel Sails Away
Don’t know for whom to feel more sorry. It is only too understandable that Finrod lost his patience, I think, but admittedly Manwë was right, too – Glorfindel has not been reborn for very long, and he had a hard time since his release, so it’s no wonder he is not taking all that very well. He's emotionally not very stable just now after all he went through.
"If he’d been in my service when I was king of Nargothrond," Finrod replied, "I would have paid Morgoth to take him off my hands."
Manwë chuckled at that, giving Finrod a brief hug. "And no doubt, my Fallen Brother would have taken one look at him and then politely refused your kind offer."
*rofl* But on the other hand, maybe Glorfindel would have driven Morgoth to flee Arda completely, simply to escape our favourite balrog-slayer ;-)
Námo and Irmo keep laying bets as to which way Glorfindel will jump next and half the time they’re both wrong
Hmmm ... could you not set Eönwë to keep record and then publish all these bets and what truly happened? Would be fun to read *grin*
Oh, Glorfindel got to sail on Vingilot? Even if not in real. Great! And even greater that Atar was it who brought him there. Even if it was to give him a bit of a talking to – but all in all, he was rather nice to Glorfindel. Though I fear if I were Glorfindel I would have been a bit confused about the permanent change of the one with me. Worse than a chameleon! It must feel decidedly odd.
Well, and now everyone is there, and I look forward to finally know *why* the Valar did that!
Author's reply
Both Finrod and Glorfindel are under a lot of stress and Glorfindel is acting out more than usual because of his precarious emotional state. Hopefully, though, this will be a learning experience for him and he'll be more mature after this.
I tried to convey the idea that the One is beyond any description we might care to give him and that he's neither of one race or another, of one gender or another (Ingwion's experience). I'm sure Glorifndel actually found it intriguing trying to guess what Atar would look like next. *grin*
Manwë will explain everything (or nearly everything) in the next chapter). Thanks for reviewing.

Poor Glorfindel. He is certanly having a hard time. But, how many elves can say they met Iluvatar face to face. What an awesome experience. I have no doubt that he will be great some day.

I forgot to post the following with the previous chapter:
I have decided I would love to have the Valar decorate my house. They are better than any interior decorator I know of. Their clothes and homes sound absolutely gorgeous.
Author's reply
We won't actually see what happened to Beleg for a few chapters as we need to return to Finrod and Glorfindel as they await the coming of Manwë to tell them about Eärendil.
I wouldn't mind 'borrowing' some of the Valar's clothes myself, LOL Thanks for reviewing.
Awesome and breathtaking. No other words come to mind as this glorious chapter is far beyond my ability to describe. It felt like he was at the very throne of God.
Tari
Author's reply
Which he was, if only metaphorically. Thanks, Tari. I'm glad you found this an awesome and breathtaking chapter. It was what I was aimng for.
It looks like the four ellon have gotten themselves into another mess. They don’t understand that only Iluvatar has all the answers. Instead, they focus their anger on the Valar who are not always guiltless, but also not always resposible for what has happened.
I want to know why Vorondil Herendilion was released at this time myself.
Tari
Author's reply
Well, we generally direct our anger at the nearest visible object and the Elves are no different. The Valar are a handy scapegoat for their frustrations and fears for Finrod and Glorfindel and the Valar are wise enough to understand this, which is why they are more sympathetic than upset.
We may eventually find out why Námo released Vorondil Sr at this time, but at the moment Námo isn't telling me anything about it. LOL

· Chapter 13: In Which Finrod Runs Away and Glorfindel Sails Away
I was wondering how long it would take Finrod to "bolt".This would be just about the last straw for him, although he's obviously running mostly from himself. Just like him though, to find humor in Finrod wanting to foist Glorfindel off on Melkor. A typical "older brother" reaction...
Glor on the other hand, has had too much time to think since arriving, and has worked himself into quite a state. Not being able to see Earendil would push him over the edge, in light of the events of Gondolin. He is understandably terrified. To his way of thinking, he couldn't be any more *alone* since their arrival after Finrod takes off. It's another crisis point for him...but he will be better after this, I think. The 10th dimension is a good place for him to grow up a little more. Sooner or later he has to face his issues, and he's exactly where he needs to be, especially with the meeting he's not expecting to have with Atar.
(Still laughing over Irmo and Namo laying bets)
Should have seen the appearance of Vingilot coming! Good one....and the description is just extraordinary, as is the explanation of "how it works". Glorfindel needed this perspective. Is this "water" the same as fed the two trees? *grin*
Atar's sense of humor regarding Glorfindel's gibbering is just wonderful...we should all hope to have such a relationship of total acceptance...and even HE finds this Child a bit exasperating. Shades of Namo's youth, perhaps?
"Something green"... the smell of Life. Lovely...and so Glorfindel gets his own trip to the Timeless Halls. And to climb the Holy mountain. Not exactly what he was expecting, but the parallel to Taniquetil just leaps out of the page. He is after all, there by invitation. This especially fits in light of Ingwion's experiences in the recent chapter.
The hiding of Earendil makes perfect sense here, otherwise Glor would be too anxious to take up where he left off, and it's just not time for that yet.
Atar's appearance, a subtle reminder to Glor that Eru is limitless, and appears as He needs to to each one of His Children. The fact that Glorfindel doesn't comment on this reinforces the idea that his fea understands what is happening.
No matter how Glorfindel resolves all this, he will be changed. I am reminded of Tolkien's description of him at the rescue of Frodo at the Bruinen...he has the glory of where he's been, even more so than having beheld the light of the Two Trees. Seamless to canon.
Finally he's back to being "just (endearing) Glorfindel" again- still pacing...and still so much to learn...
There you have it. Disjointed review for sure, but so many layers beyond what is apparent on the surface...
Cat
Author's reply
Not dijointed at all. Either that, or I'm not fully awake yet. LOL
Anyway, all that you've said about Glorfindel's need to grow up a little more and that the 10th dimension was a good place for him to be is absolutely true, and while I didn't consciously think about such things as the parallel with Taniquetil and the scene of him at the Ford Bruinen, I can see where they fit into it all and I thank you for sharing another facet of the Silmaril so to speak. There are indeed many layers to this chapter (and the story) beyond what appears on the surface and I'm not surprised that you found one facet (or two) of which I was not consciously aware when writing this chapter.
I made Atar's appearance different for Glorfindel than for Ingwion to show that Atar is indeed limitless and is really neither male or female, of one race or another, but incorporates all of them into one and we see Atar as we need to see 'him' or 'her'. Glorfindel's fëa understood that even if Glorfindel himself could not articulate what he was experiencing.
It should be interesting to see just how this little trip affects Glorfindel in the future. I wonder if Finrod will feel jealous when he learns that his cousin Ingwion had a similar experi8ence with Atar? *grin*
Thanks for reviewing, Cat. I really appreciate it.
