French Pony · 27 April 2006 · Chapter 42: The Reason

Ramhar is such a tool. He's a True Believer, and they're the most dangerous kind of all. Malcovan is a power source, and he's sort of inherently evil, but I think Ramhar is the more dangerous of the two. He's a man on a mission, and by God, he has faith in his master, the one who will give him the vengeance he craves more than his own life. He'll be a mighty foe for Aragorn to face when the time comes.

Author's reply

Yeah, he is a bit of an idiot, isn't he? A little too full of himself. An explanation is to come on how Malcovan was able to sway him. Take someone who was already very weak in his own way and play on his grief and vanity... It is always good to hear from you, French Pony. I hope that grad school is treating you well.

Hazlesilver · 25 March 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

Arwen of Lorien · 11 March 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

Wow! I was hooked as soon as I read the fist chapter, O.K. maybe I over did it on my computer time,;) but it was such a great story! A Jewl. Is this your only story here? Can not wait for the next chapter! Namarie, Arwen

Author's reply

I'm sure you did overdo your computer time! This story is... rather lengthy. I'm glad you like it. I do have one other story called "The Healer", on Cassia's website The Mellon Chronicles. It was my first story, and it's pretty much elf-torture. Enter at your own risk.

Muinthel · 28 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

hey.....you´re back!....and so am I! Sorry I did not mail for such a long time but I `m thinking of you and your family quite often! I did not make it to the computer for a while...always dying on the couch before I can make it to the keyboard....looking like a fat canonball! You made my day today with this chapter....finally Aragorn is awake....can't wait to see him sneaking into the city. But with that bad cough...and all the injuries....well I 'll bet you will have fun to torment him a little longer. take care..and i promise I will email soon! Muinthel

Hello! I'm delighted to hear from you! So it must be nearly time for the new baby to arrive? You must be very busy these days with your family. I hope it's a girl this time (smile), but of course as long as you have a healthy child it all will be lovely. I look forward to hearing from you when you have time.

Bev · 27 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

*pant,pant*....Boy am I glad to be back on line. My computer has been out of commission for almost a month. I've been moving...yuck! Well...this was a wonderful suprise to see...an update. Another great chapter!! Thank goodness for Brina.....(I've been trying to comfort Legolas by long-distance...just doesn't work). I love her moxie...she seems like she will be able to stand up to just about anything. I do believe that Legolas' kind deed, so many years ago, did lead back to another kind deed. Good Karma begats good Karma. Legolas is full of GOOD KARMA. When Aragorn ask for his sword..I knew he wouldn't be able to stay put for long. Hope Alun can get word to Legolas that Aragorn is okay...I think it would go a long way to helping him regain his health. Also glad that the cat is back in fine shape. As usual...I can't wait for the next chapter.....hope it comes soon. Peace.... Bev

Author's reply

Have you caught your breath? How awful to be computerless. Whatever did we do in ancient times when there were none? I like the good deed begets another cycle. It helps things to run better in the world. See you next time!

Socket · 26 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

All I can say is that I just can't wait until Legolas and Aragorn are reunited! It will be a great scene, I know. Thank you for plugging away at this wonderful story, despite all the issues that real life has thrown to you. Your loyal readers truly appreciate your refusal to leave us hanging. I hope your daughter continues to improve.

Author's reply

Hello Socket! Happy to see you. Gack, I hope it'll be a great scene. I'm concerned about too much blubbering. I've got steer clear of that and yet have it be heartfelt and real. No flippant "you're late" scenes please. My child is doing very well. She currently is a monkey however - we've been reading about Jane Goodall - but that is said to be normal behavior in a nine year old.

Silvertree · 18 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

Nightwing, you are one amazing writer! I don't expect you've heard from me as i've just discovered you. I've only been on this site for a few months and i haven't read every story on the site yet, but what can you expect from a mere 11-year old? I'm sorry about you're daughter, fate can be so cruel, can't it? Please respond if possible. My email is,mellon_64@hotmail.com.Keep the updates coming! Thanks!

Author's reply

Hello Silvertree! There is nothing "mere" about being 11 years old, and I an honoured that you are reading my story. I'll make a confession: I have a desire to write professionally for people in your age group, so I'm rather excited that I've pulled you in! It gives me hope that I might actually make my dream come true some day. I thank you!

sofia · 17 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

I keep missing these updates! Though thankfully I'm not that far behind this time. It had spider venom in it? Well isn't that a surprise! I certainly wasn't expecting that. And Legolas coming upon Gildwas in the forest, that is the twisty-twist. I am glad we get to catch up with Aragorn again, and that Alun was with him. I personally think that Aragorn should stay in the cave or wherever they are and get better instead of going off that night when he woke up a few hours ago. But then again Aragorn wouldn't like it, and probably you too. Can't wait for more.

Author's reply

I think Aragorn would have a really difficult time staying behind, even if he probably should. He can't leave his friend in danger, and he really is the one who should try to free Legolas. Alun has his own concerns with the situation in the city, where things will be getting a bit wild. I'm happy you are still reading, and thanks for reviewing!

yanic · 17 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

Oh gosh, another great chapter in a great story. Would have reviewed sooner but for some reason I couldn't connect to the site. That's torture- google says there is an update but I can't read it. Thanks for making it worth the wait

Author's reply

I'm glad you got to the chapter. I'd be having a fit if I couldn't get to my favorite updates!

Ireth · 16 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

Yesss!! ***does a happy dance!**** An update!!! And finally....Aragorn's back in view, and he's "sorta" alright!!! Legolas will be so thrilled when he finds out Aragorn still lives..I hope he will believe it, since he cannot see..... The "Ramhar and Malcovan secret" is a bit more clear, but there's still a lot of info missing. I'm sure we'll get to that later....now first please go safe the elf!!! This is awesome, brilliant, and thrilling!!! Please more soon if and when RL allows!!! Thanks so much for sharing, hugs and kisses!!!

Author's reply

Aragorn is functioning again. My main concern is that he not make his way into the city and immediately start coughing his head off. That won't do for someone trying to sneak.

ziggy · 15 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

Hurray! Tithlam lives and is grunging Aragorn!!!! Thank you- a weight off my mind. And at last Aragorn is awake so everything will be fine now...why are you looking at me like that? Well- you certainly packed a lot into this. But so easily done - like drinknig smooooooooth miruvor or chocolatey thing - real moments of 'aha- so THAT's it'. Your ocs are so good- they live outside the story and those glimpses give such depth to this. I am so glad that poor Legolas feels better- everyhting's looking up! Hurray. I loved the idea that HE was the one who rescued Gildwas - but hm..Ramhar - still nothing. The detail you included about the woman's scream and then a child crying is very convincing- it is hard to read that and Kryon's reaction mirrors ours. It gives the evil and terror in that city a reality - becomes three dimensional. But I wonder if Legolas should have listened to that little warning in his head before he told Brina so much...... that is a clever device - makes me alert when reading - she gives nothing away here though... Great to get an update so soon - thank you. This is still in my top 3 on the web... top three actually, of all time. Love it.

Author's reply

I'm thrilled to know I rank so highly! Thanks very much. I'll try to stay up there till I'm done.

Wantanelf · 15 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

I was right. It was great. I sense a rescue coming perhaps. Just so long as it doesn't mean the story is coming to an end. So glad Tithlam survived the fire. I'm a cat lover. So it was Legolas who rescued Gildwas. Interesting. Can't wait for the next chapter. Thanks again.

Author's reply

Oh good! I bet the wine made it even better. ;) I knew I'd be in for it if I killed Tithlam, no way was I going there!

Ithildin · 14 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

I am delighted to see this update, Nightwing! Another great chapter; as always, I feel like I’m right there with the characters. I like Brina! She is kind, practical, observant – and plucky! I hope she is not caught by the baddies here, she could pay dearly for her boldness. Legolas sorely needed this interlude of comfort and healing – it has been a dark road of late in more ways than one for our Elf! I hope the antidote helps him and gives him strength for coming confrontations with the bad guys; I suspect evil Malcovan and Ramahar are not through with him yet. Glad to see Aragorn finally getting up and around, and little Tithlam back to sit on his chest and offer warm, furry kitty-comfort! It is good news that Alun is there to help out and that he sounds ready to start his revolution – I hope he makes it through OK. Hopefully Tarnan can soon learn that Legolas had no part in his father’s murder, poor kid. And how interesting that Legolas saved Gildwas’ life many years ago, another piece of the puzzle to try to fit into place. "Thank you. And Alun, when you return, please help me take these bandages off my hands. I want to see if I can hold a sword." Great way to end the chapter. I suspect Aragorn will hold that sword whether he ought to or not. It’s heartening to see him ready to dash off in aid of his friend, but he needs to be strong enough to do so before he goes tearing out of that cave. I’m looking forward to whatever happens next, I’m sure it will be exciting! Ithildin *(

Author's reply

I like Brina too! She's sort of a combo of several old ladies I've known. Every one of them was smart as a whip and still possessed a good sense of humor. And I think that with old age comes the ability - or perhaps just the willingness - to cut through the bullshit and say what needs to be said, and do what needs to be done. I appreciate that in the older folks I know, even though they can be startlingly undiplomatic at times. Yes, we do need to get back to Tarnan and see the boy through his trauma. Poor little guy.

Alison H · 14 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

I read this excellent chapter before I went to work and the result was a giddy smile on my face all day! Yay,Tithlam is still annoying Aragorn but I was happy to see her again. She must be as worried about her missing Elf as much as Aragorn is! Brina's care of Legolas was very touching and her compassion was sorely needed.I didn't think Legolas would mind a bit of mothering from such a kindly soul.Oh, and the revelation about Gildwas and Legolas was simply wonderful.I never expected that and now I feel bad for the old healer, that he never got the chance to thank his rescuer. I hope Brina's antidote for Legolas works quickly because I have a feeling that he's going to need his strength fairly soon.I know that Brina said that her potion wouldn't cure Legolas' blindness and I'm wondering how he's going to get his sight back. The possiblities are endless. Ah, the coughing, grumpy Ranger returns and, boy, was I glad to hear Aragorn ask Alun to remove the bandages from his hands! Aragorn means business and he's raring to go but he, too, needs to build up his strength if he wants to rescue Legolas.I could hear the sadness in Aragorn's voice when he said that Legolas thought him dead--I can't wait for their reunion! So, the rebellion is almost underway and Aragorn is going to be a part of it.I cannot wait for Chapter 42!! Thanks again for this story and updating so soon. Ali.

Author's reply

I was happy to get back to Tithlam. I was originally going to have Aragorn wake to find himself covered in socks, but then I realized that all his socks got burned up, and the poor hill men probably didn't have many spare sets for the cat to make off with. So no socks on Aragorn for the time being. Yes, he means business, and it's time to rescue his friend.

Elenora · 14 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

Although I've not been consistent in leaving reviews as I ought, I have been consistent in faithfully following this story. Let me tell you, it is like a drink of cool water in a drought!!! The outpouring of good LotR stories is slowly but surely dwindling, so your story, while even in the "best of times" was a cut above the rest, now is a godsend for those of us desperate for a good, entertaining break from reality. I am very thankful that RL is giving you enough of a break to be able to indulge yourself with your writing...all us LotR fans benefit immensely from that indulgence! These last two chapters were very, very satisfying. The tension has been tight for so long, it was wonderful to have it "backed off" for just a bit and to see "a reprieve" in Legolas's condition. I empathized with Legolas in his feelings of bliss at the succor and care that was finally being given him - our elven prince has suffered so much that I nearly ached with relief at finally seeing him get a bit of comfort! And the background Brina gave on the old man of the cottage was quite interesting - but it was a stroke of brillance having him be someone Legolas rescued in the past! Nice touch!! It seemed particularly appropriate that Legolas should have gained refuge and protection in the cottage of the very one he helped years earlier. I was hoping Brina, being the experienced healer you were indicating, would want to examine Legolas's neck injury. I'm glad this particular plot element hasn't been forgotten. All along, I've wondered just what it was that so disabled Legolas (never guessed that it might be spider venom, though that was a great idea, being as how those great spiders of Mirkwood have always been such a trial to the elves of that wood), but I've also wondered about lingering remnants of the dart...I figure (hope, prayer...!)eventually someone will have the skill enough to more deeply probe the wound and remove what so obviously still seems to remain within the original wound - a remnant of the dart, no doubt still laced with a bit of the poison. Wishful thinking, or am I hitting close to the mark?! Thank you, thank you, for this most riveting, intriguing story. I have so thoroughly enjoyed it...I'm really going to hate to see it end! You write about Legolas so wonderfully - so many times during your story, I've actually felt like I've gotten a true, startlingly beautiful glimpse at what an elf might really be like, were they reality. It's hard capturing the ethereal in words, but you've managed it again and again. Real Life is demanding, but I hope that you won't put aside your writing once this story ends. That would be such a shame!

Author's reply

Thanks for such a nice long lovely review! I also liked the thought that Legolas' small past act of kindness would come back to benefit him later. However we like to think of it, as a circle of action going round and round, or karma, or the energy of intention... there seems to be an element of truth to the idea that people's actions for good or bad can leave a sort of permanent energy that influences the way things in the world progress. Goodness, I'm delighted that you think I've gotten "elvish qualities" right. I find it a really elusive and mysterious thing for the most part. Oh, and your aim is quite good.

French Pony · 13 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

I can't say much -- I've been working on my thesis, and I'm tired, and I really ought to have been in bed half an hour ago. But I just had to read this, and I have to leave at least a little note. I like Brina. She's a good, kind soul, and Legolas so desperately needed her friendship as well as her medicine. He'll be okay as long as she's around, so I'm glad she's there. And I'm glad that the kitty is stil around, too. That's all. I liked it. I'm going to bed.

Author's reply

You poor tired kid! I hope your studies are going well. I have a friend who is working on her Ph.D and it looks like a real slog. Glad you still have a little time for fanfic.

Legolass · 13 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

These last two chapters have been as wonderfully written all the previous ones. Good to have the background information, and great to see poor Legolas receiving kindness again - it was getting really painful. Most of all, good to have Aragorn back!

Author's reply

Yeah, a little too painful. I was getting a bit tired of it myself.

Robinscat · 13 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

Finally, Aragorn is here. It is so good to know that he lives. And is awake. And Tithlim is with him. Wonderful. Things are looking up. I never imagined that Legolas would have known Gildwas however long ago. You put such wonderful twists in your story. I was very pleasantly surprised to see an update so soon. Thanks, Robin

Author's reply

I know people were worried about the cat, so I figured I'd better mention her right away once I got back to Aragorn. In fact, I got the impression people were MORE concerned about Tithlam!

Wantanelf · 13 February 2006 · Chapter 41: Revelations

I don't know if you get many reviews from people before they have actually read the chapter, but here's one. I know it will be wonderful. I have loved this story from chapter 1 and am always so happy to see an update. Today's came at a particularily good time. It's been a horrible day and seeing an update of To See A World made my day! Now I'm off with a glass of wine to snuggle up under my electric blanket to live in a fantasy world, if even for just a little while. (I printed up the chaper). Thanks for the update.

Author's reply

I hope the chapter satisfied and made your crummy day better!

Ithilien · 4 February 2006 · Chapter 40: Fragile

I finally landed. Sorry for the delay in this review. As usual. I’ll tell you, Nightwing, I may have a hard time getting to my favorites to review, but I am loyal and I always, somehow, manage to get my review in. Eventually. But then I shouldn’t feel too guilty I guess. It took a while for us to get this chapter. Okay, I just tossed guilt on you, and I know it’s not required. You have a life to live. So let me fix this by saying this chapter was DEFINITELY worth the wait. I wasn’t expecting to come back to the elf again, but of course I’m delighted that you wrote it this way. Gosh, I’m worried for him. He apparently still suffers from his injury. I know I thanked you before for this, but I have to reinforce that. Refreshing is what it is when an author takes their time about resolving issues. Too often I see someone get ill and then a few chapters later they are all better again. Sometimes I wonder why was it necessary to create the illness in the first place. But this story doesn’t do that. Legolas was injured from the start, and you haven’t made that go away. We’ve seen ups and downs in the illness, but it has always been there, and THAT is one of the things that makes this story believable and truly worth reading. Ramhar is just nasty. I’m not sure what he intends for Legolas, but it will not be good. Actually, I do think I know what he intends. Is he planning to hostage him to Thranduil, use the elf-prince as a means to get a better hold on the forest access? Then again, I’m remembering that Legolas is not the most beloved in his family. He might not make a good excuse for Thranduil to drop his defenses. Besides, we have this blindness issue to deal with (which also keeps its place evenly within the story – well done my friend). Brina seems to have realized Legolas’ deception, but outside of her, Alon and Aragorn, no one else has quite figured it out. How did Legolas slip up so that she figured it out? Phooey, it may be a while before I know as you tell us we’re next going to embark on Aragorn’s adventure. Darn! Well, I hope life continues to bless you with spare time so you can write more of this story soon.

Author's reply

And now I'm finally replying. I agree it is rather tiresome to see our heroes severely injured, near death, and suddenly - usually after the uninjured party clasps the hands of the injured and somehow "pours his life force" into his friend by the strength of his love alone (oh, and of course singing something in Elvish) - all is well again. Huh? I hope I'm doing better than that, and that I've created more than injury for injury's sake. Ramhar is nasty, vain and all that rot, but there just might be a human side to him as well. Perhaps we will see that aspect show itself before it's all over. Actually we're back with the elf again next chapter, but it looks promising that we'll see something of Aragorn as well. And now back to it, while the house is mine!

Ireth · 29 January 2006 · Chapter 40: Fragile

I was very gladly surprised you updated your fic, and this chapter had me on the edge of my seat. And the fact that nobody noticed Legolas" blindness didn't strike me as strange, he's been able to see before this all happened so he knows what to do to make it believable. So the elf got a bit of respite. That's probably a good thing, gives Aragorn a bit more time to gain strength as well!! I really wonder why Ramhar (great name by the way, scary as hell!!) hates the elves so muchand way to GO Brina!!! For helping the elf and for noticing his blindness...she might be able to help him with the headaches and the pain in his neck.... I really hope you will update soon and I'm really glad to hear your daughter's doing good. Thanks for sharing, lots of hugs and kisses!!!!

Author's reply

Hello, my apologies for taking so long to respond. I kinda like Ramhar's name myself. It sounds tough and mean. Malcovan I am less fond of now. Sounds like a name of an Italian artist or something. I think Brina will be of great help to Legolas. I'm glad she's here.

sofia · 29 January 2006 · Chapter 40: Fragile

I see an update for this story only to realize i've missed the last few chapters! So I've been catching up and I have to say I love it. I've been looking forward to Alun and the boy possibly meeting with Legolas. And if Thranduil finds out what has happened to Legolas... I can imagine what his reaction would be like. I for one thought Legolas' blindness was convincing, I think the only time I doubted (a tiny bit, I must say) if it seemed real was when he was in the lord's room and all the people were there. Good job and I can't wait for more!

Author's reply

Hello Sofia! Well it's probably fun to have a few chapters to play with all at once. It's OK that you doubted the blindness at that time. I tried to convey that it was rather chaotic in there, but writing from Legolas' POV it might not have been descriptive enough to establish the circumstances in the room: flaring torches (not yet daylight), yelling people, Legolas was bent down, and he either kept his eyes closed or fixed upon the ceiling, etc. More is coming, at my usual snail's pace, but it's coming!

yanic · 26 January 2006 · Chapter 40: Fragile

omigosh, an update! While I can't say I'm really happy that Legolas finally reached the end of his ability to endure physical torment, I am glad he's with someone who can take care of his wounds. I really want to hear the story of Gildwas and the elves he met, I love all the twists in this story!

Author's reply

No, it's a sad thing that Legolas has been brought to the edge. But we need the old lady, and he needs time. The story of Gildwas? Yes... yes... scurries off to get to work.

Bev · 26 January 2006 · Chapter 40: Fragile

How wonderful to see an up-date from you. Glad your daughter is doing better. Well now....I must agree with everyone else...you have written a very descriptive idea of how Legolas has learned his patience. I always love to hear all about his wonderful traits. So glad he has another ally,in Brina,to help him. Yes...we were all waiting for Aragorn to make an appearence, but you are right about the time-line...it just wouldn't make sence for him to just bounce up and be ready to fight. Again...I must say...this is just a magnificent story. Looking forward to the next chapter. Be well...Peace. Bev

Author's reply

(inswet girly giggle here) I love to hear about the elf's wonderful traits too. I'm glad Brina has finally turned up. I've been waiting for her for ages! Author Reply: Ummm, right. That would be "insert".
