I have to agree with Jay. You just want to give that Elf a smack! *LOL* At least they're safe from the Corsairs. Now to see to where Inglor plans on sailing them.
Author's reply
Thank-you for reviewing, Fiondil. Inglor certainly wouldn't win any awards for communication, would he?

How is it that when Inglor has just done something amazing and saved their lives, I still want to hit him? I don't blame Haleth one bit!

Inglor has a talent for being maddening. I imagine that he was a very difficult child to raise.

Such a prosaic explanation: I was hoping the Gondorian navy would arrive! As it is ... well, the dwarves will have fun finishing them off.
Author's reply
The Gondorian navy? I hadn't thought of them. What would likely have happened is that the Corsairs would have landed and Haleth would have been taken prisoner as one of them...again...or at least held under suspicion of being up to no good. Inglor could have escaped in the confusion and the last she'd have seen of him was the white ship, sailing down river just before she was taken prisoner.
Although I think I'd rather face the Gondorian navy than the dwarves. The navy would eventually turn back. The dwarves never would.
Thanks for reviewing.

I'm very very happy I'll get to see how the jouney of Haleth and Inglor ends.
Even if you did said long time ago it will end sadly.
And I must say that this is one of the most surreal and frustrating stories that ever ensnared me.
I can't figure out Inglor and I'm never sure what's happening....
But I am glad you're still updating.
Author's reply
Lily of the valley! I haven't heard from you in years. I hope everything's going well for you. "Even if you did said long time ago it will end sadly." You remember that? You're memory is amazing. Thank-you for reviewing.

That Haleth put Inglor's safety above her own says a lot about her. Does Inglor even understand? Probably not.
This has turned into a cliffhanger and I will now have to try to be patient until the next chapter is posted.
Author's reply
Thank-you for reviewing, Tari. Haleth isn't thinking. She's just reacting. Inglor understands she's about to do something dangerous that will likely end in disaster. Inglor also understands that arguing with Haleth can be a non-starter. He's going to have to think of something really fast.

Thank-you for reviewing, Elflingimp. You're right. He probably wouldn't leave her if he had any choice in the matter. There currently doesn't seem much of a choice, though.

· Chapter 11: The View from the Bridge
'Good-bye, Inglor,’ she said with a sad smile. It was a terrible way to bid farewell to her best friend, but circumstances would not allow for anything better.
‘And how shall you escape the Corsairs?’ he asked.
‘I’ll run. There are plenty of places to hide. I know the city far better than them. I’ll be fine.’
Oh my poor poor Haleth; always finding different ways to leave Inglor so that he is free to leave for Valinor. What an inferiority complex though I can't really blame her, that elf is glorious.
Curious to see where you take this story forward. Will it be as long as 'Pitfalls of the Palantir'? I hope so. Also,it seems as though this one will be the last? I hope not!
There is so much restraint and suppressed emotion and sadness in this story that it makes me want to cuff both of them on the head.
The title seems so ominous! Poor Haleth and even more so: poor Inglor!
Will they at least confess or will they suppress their feelings forever; manifested only in Inglor's eternal sadness (in Valinor) ?
I guess H and I would just love to maintain their UST till the very end :D
Waiting to read more!
Author's reply
Thank-you for reviewing, shadowfax. Haleth knows she can't go with Inglor to Valinor. In her mind, there's not more to be said about it. Who can say what's going on in Inglor's mind? I don't think Haleth would ever tell Inglor of her true feelings for him. It would be too mortifying for her, especially if he told her he loved her as a friend.

That sounds like a really, really bad plan. Surely Inglor won't agree?

I hope the Royal Navy of Gondor and Arnor is in hot pursuit of that black ship!

Thank-you for reviewing, eiluj. Haleth probably hopes they are, too, but with her luck they'd get there after the Corsairs had caught them. Or they'd arrest her as a suspected Corsair in the confusion.

All that hard work for naught. Inglor never considered that the width might be a problem. Sadly for Halleth, this will only delay his departure. Her pain must drag out longer. Too bad he can't take her with him.

Well that was an easy rescue. It's a good thing Inglor is a friend of the dwarves or things could have gotten quite nasty. Poor Haleth failed to get the rescue she was hoping for, (Inglor still takes her for granted.) but at least she got a good meal.
Author's reply
Thank-you for reviewing, Tari. Haleth is probably surprised that Inglor noticed she was missing at all, given how focused he is on building his ship. I'm not sure she would really want him to rescue her, at least not in the classic way of riding in on the white horse. With her luck, the horse would step on her foot and he'd get distracted and forget to bring her with him so that she would end up rescuing herself.

Author's reply
Thank-you for reviewing, Fiondil. Poor Inglor. He was so focused on making the ship look pretty that he neglected to consider practical matters. Haleth was so focused on bitterness that she didn't seem to notice. Either that or she just assumed she knew what he was doing. (I've done things like that.)

What a mess Haleth finds herself in. Will Inglor get beyond his preoccupation with building the ship enough to notice she is missing and go looking for her? I certainly hope so.
Author's reply
Thank-you for reviewing, Tari. Eventuall Inglor will notice he's hungry. He may have some vague memory of Haleth going out for food, or he might climb to the sail loft to talk to her and then realize she's gone (after calling for her a few times and checking the dark corners to see if she's lurking there.)

How very much I have enjoyed this serial indeed!
I do tirelessly enjoy reading what you have written, and seemed to soar through reading all eight instalments in a single sitting!
Already I care deeply for the bitterness of Haleth's lot, to age in the face of her departing friend; and I do enjoy Inglor. I do think at length about much of what you have left unsaid too. That is perhaps the keenest pleasure of reading your work, the daydreams left for me to fulfill.
A warm thank you.

Poor Haleth - it never rains but it pours...
It would be nice to think Inglor was rushing to her rescue like the cavalry - but he's probably still deep in communion with his ship and hasn't even noticed that she's unavoidably delayed. Although a woman can hope.

Haleth learned a while back to not depend on Inglor to rescue her...although he still does, just not in the conventional, heroic sort of way.

Haleth is a lady of substance. Even though she knows Inglor will leave and take her heart with him, she is still willing to make the sails which will take him on his journey. Heartbreaking!
Author's reply
Thank-you for reviewing, Tari. Poor Haleth is really in a situation where she can't do anything else. IF she tells him no, Inglor would make his own sails. She would feel guilty while she watched him make the sails. They would fight and she would say something unfortunate and then have to apologize...again. It would really cast a cloud over their last bit of time together. Haleth is trying to avoid any bad feelings between them.
Thanks again for taking the time to review.

· Chapter 7: A New Task
Oh yes - a very different chapter to the one I read earlier! I do wonder where Inglor means by 'home', whether Haleth is right in her interpretation, or whether he has somewhere else in mind for them to sail together.
Silver sails would have been most beautiful, and I am very struck with Cirdan making sure that any elves who arrived, over the years after he and his people left, might have everything they would need to build their own ship.
As for my username - I am very, very clumsy - I fall over holes in the ground that aren't there - and after a particular incident on television when we were courting, where there was a wombat with equally poor agility and dexterity, my husband's private name for me became wombat. The 'curious' came from a couple of places - but I do always want to know 'Who? What? Where and why?'...
Author's reply
Thanks for taking the time to reread, Curiouswombat. There are several versions of the story lurking on my hard drive and I picked the wrong one.
I'm glad you like the idea of the silver sails and Cirdan leaving supplies for any who came after, but I must admit that the idea was a convenience for me. Without it, it would have taken nearly a year for them to gather the supplies, cure the wood, locate the thread with which to weave the fabric for the sails, make the rope, collect and prepare the pitch for waterproofing. If I had a better imagination, I could come up with a plot for getting each raw material and another plot while everything was being prepared, but I'm just not that creative.
Thank-you for explaining your username. I can completely relate to being clumsy. I didn't realize wombats were...er...somewhat less than perfectly co-ordinated. Curiousity is a good personailty trait. It keeps the rest of us from getting too complacent.
Thank-you for reviewing.

I do wish Haleth would stop being so bloody noble and just tell Inglor how she's feeling about his ship building. More than likely it's not what she thinks it is. And it wouldn't hurt for Inglor to get a clue and stop being so mysterious all the time, though I suspect that he doesn't see it that way himself, silly ellon. They both need lessons in mastering communication skills. *grin*
Author's reply
Thank-you, Fiondil. I don't know if I'd call Haleth's behavior completely noble. She's terrified of embarrassing herself.
Inglor is of the opinion that everything in his behavior is completely obvious. He's not hiding anything; at least not anything that another Elf could see.
These two show text book bad communication. They both speak two and a bit languages in common, yet neither really had any idea what the other really means.

· Chapter 6: Revelation
Poor Haleth. I can just imagine how she must feel. It's sad that Inglor is unaware of her feelings. He propably just thinks she's in a bad mood. That he might be the cause would never enter his mind. I think this is why Eru wanted to keep the Elves and Men separate. Any kind of union between them is almost impossible, the loss of which would cause insurmoutable heart ache.
Author's reply
Thank-you, Tari. The Elves must grieve deeply when their mortal friend die, as they must all do. How much worse would it be for an Elf to lose their spouse?
Haleth does feel horrible at the prospect of losing Inglor. Inglor has had enough experience with Haleth's moods to not pry too deeply because it only makes things worse. He does seem to have learned how to humour her enough to keep her from physical violence...if you don't count the hammers she throws around.
Thank-you again for reviewing.
