The meeting with Finrod was pretty cool. Still can't decide if she's experiencing a racial memory or a real one. I'm sure we'll find out soon enough. Looking forward to more.
Author's reply
Thank-you for reviewing, Fiondil. Finrod is my absolute favourite Tolkien character. I aspire to be like him...except for the getting ripped the shreds by a werewolf part.
The character thinks she's experiencing true memories. She's really messed up, though, so who's to say?

She did mean well. It probably sounded brave when she said it but she hadn't thought it through.

This isn't a site I hang around much, but I've just found this story and been blown away. Then I've gone back, found your other writings, read them in order, and come back to this one again. Thoughtfully written, beautifully characterised, humour and angst balanced, and only the odd little grammatical nit-pick to pull out. Thank you so much for sharing it with us, and I'm greatly looking foward to learning more about Haleth/Silmarien's background and why she is so much out of time! And what's Inglor been up to when he left her at Elrond's...?
Author's reply
Thank-you, Freyalyn. I'm very happy that you enjoy the stories and grateful that you took the time to review. Inglor will be back within the next few chapters.
Thank-you again for reviewing.

What an excellent New Year gift - thank you. I was just thinking how good it would be to have another chapter of Haleth's story before I had to go back to work - and within a couple of hours here one is!
If she could only remember Inglor she might think that he was a good deal easier to travel with than Eonwe... I do hope she makes it to the top before she passes out on him - goodness knows how he'd cope with that!
Author's reply
Happy New Year, Curiouswombat. I apologize for the delay between chapters. Like many people, I was swamped by Christmas preparations. Hopefully they updates will come a bit more regularly from now on. I can't promise that just yet because the next section needs a LOT of work/rewriting.
On some level she probably does remember Inglor and that's why she hasn't threatened to do grievous bodily harm to Eonwe. The odd conversations are familiar enough that she can participate in them without being completely flummoxed.
Thank-you for reviewing.

Wow. I caught up a few days ago but had to give it time and then come back to re read.
It's like two absolutely different stories to me, form the moment she almost dies onwards. First, I never saw this coming, so perhaps I missed signals, so it all unsettled me and left me kind of disoriented. Then, it's quite a switch, from a wanderer with a name full of heavy connotations to a descendant from the House of Earendil... never expected it. I'm looking forward to seeing good old Haleth shake off the the haze.
Anyway, it's a very good trick, and I quite like the genealogy. Looking forward to th e ending.
Author's reply
It does feel like two different stories, doesn't it? There will be at least one or two more before it ends. Maybe I should learn more about basic story structure and present things as seperate stories rather than one long tale?
As for the genealogy, I was trying to think of a way to mirror Earendil's voyage. According to the Alkalabeth, Amandil did sail West to beg for help. Obviously his request (if he ever managed to present it) was denied. For some reason, those few sentences stuck in my head and this story grew out of them.

I'm sorry that things are so confusing, Galathil. I tend to assume that everyone else knows what's going on because I know what's going on...except there's a lot of extra information that no one but me knows.
I'll continue posting the story until it's finished. Hopefully it will get less confusing soon.

I am fascinated by this back story for Haleth, no, Silmariën; is she really that old or has she somehow got someone else's memories? Or can she be the first of the second-born to have been re-housed like the first-born? Each chapter brings more and more questions - exactly as a really good story should!
And now her arm hurts again...
Author's reply
Thanks, curiouswombat. I wasn't sure how the revelations would go over.
Those are really good questions about her memories. For the moment, at least, she seems to be accepting them at face value.

It is good that Silmariën now knows her name, but why she is going to the Undying Lands is a question I still have as well as what part Haleth plays in this. Perhaps the nightmares she is having will finally leave her.
Author's reply
The easy answer is that Inglor brought her to the Undying Lands, but he's not currently in the picture so we don't know why yet.

Sorry I didn't get to review the last chapter! I know you missed me right? LOL! Don't stop writing I love your stories! Hugs The Imp
Author's reply
Hello, Elflingimp. Please don't feel as though you have to review every chapter. I really appreciate the reviews, but no one owes them to me.
I can give you part of Haleth's family tree. She's the daughter of Elendil's (unnamed in canon and totally made up by me) sister. As one of Elros' descendants, she has a little elf blood, but not very much.

i have reread that chapter twice now and finally picked up the words, her cousin. This pretty much confirms the best written OC ever theory. 'Somewhere within that massive rampart was a cleft, where the old stories told of the city of Tirion, built upon the green hill of Tuna. No mortal who had ever set foot upon those shores had ever returned to Middle-earth; yet, as the spray splashed on her face, the Finder had the eerie sensation she had been there before.'

Woww! A quick update and a surprising one at that!
So our favourite scoundrel Haleth is really Silmarien. The name seems as much ill-fitting for me as a reader, after having 'Haleth' run about so much, as it is to the woman herself!
What I don't understand is her age. If she is indeed the cousin of Isildur and Anarion, how can she live so long? Or am I missing something here? I am guessing at her being a descendant of the original cousin??
Well, I'll give it to you: A mystery even after much revelation!
Hoping for a quick update!
Author's reply
The name really doesn't fit at all, does it? I can't picture a Silmarien running around the countryside, sleeping in ditches and getting leaves stuck in her hair.

huh!Now at this point I am forced to wonder... is she THE Silmariën? Is she on OC who was named for Silmariën? Isildur had no sister and the conversation seemed to imply... but then maybe she is another relative and merely agreed that she did not wish to bury a relative. My guess was originally to be Elros' daughter Tindómiel. Then you went and mentioned that she knew him from a book she had seen as a child soooo... no not her. I never developed another guess. Though I will admit I was looking in the T.A. for an answer after the last chapter. If Haleth is an OC let me tell you she is the best OC I have seen in YEARS of reading fan fic. Damn. Now... on the Inglor, is he or isn't he Finrod himself? Hmmmm? Finrod is supposed to be with Amarie by this time so I guess not yet the set up seemed to imply that it was.
Author's reply
Wow. I'm impressed with your detective work. Haleth isn't the Silmarien. She's an original character.

Eureka! The Rosetta stone chapter of a fascinating story!
So, Haleth is the daughter of a hitherto-unknown sibling, most likely a sister since she's not listed on the family tree, of Elendil, son of the 18th (and last) Lord of Andúnië, Amandil?
And she is named for Silmarien, the daughter of Tar-Elendil and the mother of Valandil, the first Lord of Andúnië, who was the keeper of the Ring of Barahir?
No WONDER she's so interested in retrieving Númenórean artifacts!
Oh, man... you solved one big mystery, but left soooo many more tantalizing hints about her background.... I can't wait to read more! more! more!
Very well done, Haleth! Thank you for such a great story!
- Barbara, jumping up and down in excitement....
P.S. Oh, wait, does that mean that the black arrow of Bard the Bowman was from one of the famous Númenórean steel bows? That would explain why she went looking for it....
P.P.S. One of the things I really like about this story is that Haleth could not remember who she was, yet as soon as she was able, she resumed sneaking around... you can take the memory out of the woman, but you can't take the Haleth-ness out of her....
Author's reply
Yes. Haleth is Amandil's granddaughter and Elendil's niece. She's the daughter of Elendil's sister. With a few notable exceptions, Tolkien didn't list Elros' female offspring.
I'm really relieved that no one shouted Mary Sue the instant her family background was revealed.
Author Reply: Oops! I hit the wrong button. Sorry!
I did some very cursory research on amnesia while writing this story. It's possible for someone to lose their memories of their identity but retain skills that they've learned. So she can't remember her name, but she still knows how to skulk around.
Thank-you for the review.

"Silmariën"? Elros' daughter? Now you have really twisted my thoughts! You are good at misleading clues, and I will have to think hard to untwist. At the moment I confess I don't have any understanding of who she is and how she got here. I will probably have to re-read the whole set of stories.
Author's reply
Haleth is more Elros' great-great-great-great-great-great-great-granddaugther. I'm sorry that the story is so confusing. I really hesistated in posting the continuation because I knew it wasn't very clear and I couldn't figure out a way to make it less confusing. At this point, I'm not sure that reading the other stories will help.

· Chapter 17: Not Quite As Dead As Originally Believed
Having reread some of the chapters since my old idea was blown out of the water I think I was looking too far back. The boots were newer in pitfalls and were given to her by someone she cares about. If she was of Numenor she'd have long since lost the tendancy to attach to any mortal. She knows that Tar Minyatur is her ancestor. Remembered seeing his image in a very old tome. Mentally isted Lothiriel as one of her relatives back when she was trying to think of a name in the finder... damn this is killing me! I have to break out my LOTR appendix again. Can't rely on my memory at this point. I think she will be someone born late 3rd age though. Maybe earlier then Lothiriel but not so far back as I was thinking. Any chance of a hint, or a clue on how long before you tell us?
Author's reply
Oh no. I'm sorry. I've mislead you. Haleth refers to Emeldir as her ancestress. The other names were meant to be a list of potential names rather than a list of foremothers. Sorry!

Hahaha as much as I should be feeling pity for Haleth, I can't help feeling amused looking at her state!
The meeting with Eonwe was hilarious "Are you?" "Am I?" So much for flowery speech!!
I am waiting for Haleth to meet the Valar! Would be quite funny, I think!
Author's reply
It has to be awkward meeting someone without a name. It's hard to say if Eonwe genuinely doesn't know her name or if he's been told she doesn't know her own name (and not to let her know what it is).
Now I'm confusing myself.
