Oh, I think it'll be much more than just fifty percent who get a kick out of this naked Wood-elf. My goodness, what a lovely holiday present. And I just loved Legolas' run through the trees, with or without clothes. So nice to see him acting as he wishes, away from the constraints of the mortal court. I also enjoyed seeing Bandobras be more assertive. The descriptions are, as always, just phenomenal. The wind flapping the tent like a sail -- perfect. And Gimli's worry about the sea longing was a lovely touch. Marvelous, marvelous interaction with Legolas and the forest, and beautiful descriptions of him -- "still and white as a shaft of moonlight athwart a marble column." Beautiful. I don't think that the maidens would be as scrupulous as Bandy believes -- goodness knows I wouldn't. But it doesn't matter, because we got out of the tent and into some intrigue. There's a huge plot going on, with all those Men involved. Hope you feel better, and have a wonderful holiday! Lamiel

As soon as he went sneaking out like he wasn't supposed to, I knew he either had to see something or be seen. Thankfully it was the former (especially in the given circumstances). o_O Yike, more trouble. I'll bet Aragorn and Faramir will want his head for being out and about (and unarmed, something I'm sure his father would frown upon), but won't be able to do much about it considering this fortuitous bit of eavesdropping.

Ah, now I am up-to-date again! Favorite line: “First Bandy calls you a cow, now you are a goat! The next man who compares you to a farm animal is getting an axe in his belly.” This is very much a tease. Please update soon. Humble Scribe, etc.

"Eat first, conspire later!" Truer words were ne'er spoken. I am loving this!

Gracious, how did I get so behind on your story? Must be the holiday season here in my world. Whatever you intended and however interesting your expertise is on tournaments, I fear that you must accept that Bandy is your best creation. I do not love hobbits. They annoy me greatly. This one, I make an exception. I also love your depiction of Gimli. What a dwarf! “T’ch, t’ch!” clucked Gimli into his beard, trying not to smile. “There now, Bandy, I promise I won't complain about your cooking at all when Legolas is dead, but should he live I reserve the right to make my opinions known." I also loved the bit where Legolas can't convince Bandy he is alright and just goes with elven magic as an explanation. Elven magic can be so handy. Well done! Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

Ah, but wait. Now I'm suspicious of anyone who was sitting in on the impromptu council in chapter 7, when they explicitly said "Lasgalen's" father might not be so generous should his son be killed in Gondor. That would make sense, given the implied motives, and Legolas has already suggested that Aragorn keep a wary eye on them. I guess I'll just have to wait and find out with everyone else. ;)

*snorts* Thanks I'll be sure to cross the horse of my list...the bugger's shifty eyes were getting to me. ioy...trying to keep track of all the suspects and their motives in that post has left me short several dearly loved brain cells...
Lamiel · 15 December 2003 · Chapter 16: The Goat is Tethered
I loved Gimli's line at the end. Something along the lines of what I was thinking, when they started calling Legolas a goat. Not the description I would apply to my favorite Elf! Ah, so we have a motive! I actually hadn't thought much about this loan of Thranduil's, but it certainly does offer some explanation. More and more folks are finding out who Legolas is, though, and it's only a matter of time before someone starts gossiping. Nice detail about how he was trying to disguise his voice, by the way. Thank you for another marvelous chapter - and the glimpse of these great lords and ladies as real people. Arwen Undomiel with a chicken in her lap - that is truly inspired. And I loved Aragorn's hug, and Legolas' reaction to it. Perfect!
Coriel · 15 December 2003 · Chapter 16: The Goat is Tethered
One of the best chapters yet! So I finally begin to see where this is going . . . crooks are always poor sports, and it does seem that some weeding is necessary in Aragorn's garden. Somehow I have a gut feeling about Ardun; that happened in a movie once, and the guy turned out perfectly innocent, but still . . . Anyway ~ I have to say that I absolutely love you characterization of Legolas. Looks do not make a character; they must have depth (and preferably high moral standards) and your Legolas seems to have plenty of both. All his little nuances as you have written them are just perfect to my mind :) There are far too many examples in this chapter alone to quote. So funny the way Gimli seems quite fed up with Legolas' four-legged epithets. Neither a cow nor a goat comes immediately to mind when I think of Legolas. ;) Overall, it has been a very interesting evening. But now everyone is booting me off the computer, so I'll have to leave it at that. Great job!

I must (again?) congratulate you on the vivid images you created. Your description of the light from the kitchen of Faramir's house reflecting on the wet pavement alone was worth the read! Then there was that image of the leaders of Gondor having just enjoyed their dinner *grin*. Aragorn with his feet propped upon the hearth, the Queen with a hen upon her lap must have been quite a sight for Brytta's esquire. Not to speak of Legolas about to serve as the goat to bait a trap for a lion. Apart from the imagery, I am relieved that Híldaf is about to serve another master. Though Brytta will surely find another poor soul to serve as his esquire, someone I do not envy. Now I am hooked to read more about Legolas and his new disguise as goat :-) fliewatuet

Ah, this gets better and better. So another attempt to sow dissension and rile bad feelings against Legolas. It seems that whoever is doing this doesn't know his enemy that well, though, or else he'd just tell everyone about the Elf and that'd be it. Lovely detail with Gimli and Bandobras in this chapter. Especially the note about the rain washing a gully in the mud -- good drainage is just the sort of thing that we modern readers take for granted. Bandy also seems to be growing and developing as a character. It's a pleasure to see him interacting on a strong basis with the other esquire -- he's much more than Legolas' pet. Wonderful chapter, as always, and I'm looking forward to further developments. Thank you.
Tinnuial · 8 December 2003 · Chapter 15: The Second Letter
This gets better and better....or rather...worse and worse for the poor Green Knight!!! The image of Legolas singing and splashing in the tub is....amusing... LOL!!! I can't imagine he's too upset regarding these arrangmements... I'm beginning to wish updates came more often that once a week...but that only serves to prove how masterfully you are weaving this mystery around us!!! Thank you for the new chapter... :)
Coriel · 8 December 2003 · Chapter 15: The Second Letter
So the plot just continues to thicken . . . Someone seems to have too much time on their hands, to say the very least. Thankfully, I had had lunch already, so Bandy didn't taunt me much! Though all that did sound better than sausage in a microwave. ^_^ *Nice going, Brytta.*
fliewatuet · 8 December 2003 · Chapter 15: The Second Letter
Hm, more mysterious letters were written. And thanks to Brytta's temper, the evidence is destroyed. I don't envy his poor esquire, and I only hope that Brytta won't discover where he has been. As for the author of those letters, we now know that its neither Hallas of Lossarnach nor Brytta of Rohan. Two down, many more to go ... Faramir and Elessar have to seek the needle in a haystack if they want to shed light upon the whole affair. BTW could you post a warning at the beginning of the chapter if it contains such a vivid description of the meals that Bandy prepares? That's nothing to read with an empty stomach (or maybe it's the best thing to do?) ... Anyway, my stomach is growling now! fliewatuet (*off in search for something to eat*)
fliewatuet · 5 December 2003 · Chapter 14: The First Letter
Another wonderful chapter! The stifling atmosphere inside the healer's tent was well described and added wonderfully to the interrogation of Hallas of Lossarnach and his misery, along with the distant rolling of thunder and the sound of the rain. But Hallas of Lossarnach is a poor fellow, indeed. To use the love of a poor knight for his lady in such a way and only to harm Lasgalen of Dale is outright mean! I do hope that Elessar and Faramir will catch the author of that note rather sooner than later, and I wonder what motives they will find once they uncover that intrigue. And, of course, Legolas has not yet won the tournament, so I also hope for another round of interesting jousts. fliewatuet
Saber · 2 December 2003 · Chapter 14: The First Letter
Well this has definetely caught my attention. I figured it was an elf when Eowyn noticed the Green Knight riding such a spirited steed without bit or bridle...took another post or two before I was completely certain that it was indeed Legolas, but I had the pleasure of cackling with pleasure at being right when he was revealed. I wondered if Aragorn would be pissed or just crack up laughing when he found out. LOL...seems it was the former. But what is this new twist I see? Someone with a grudge against the Green Knight? My my...even as a 'man' Legolas can't stop making enimies. =P The identity of this perpetrator will no doubt keep me guessing till you deem it proper to let us in on the secret. MORE SOON PLEASE!

Dear Saber, I'm glad you've hopped on the Green Knight's bandwagon. Welcome aboard! I promise, this won't be nearly as long and bumpy a ride as Ithilien's "The Hunting Trip." I don't have her brand of patience (or talent). I'm trying to update once a week; with the holidays screaming behind me I may get a little behind (no pun intended, but that did make me think of overindulging on gingerbread men). I've already lapped my too-busy beta to such an extent I'll be altering chapters NEXT Christmas. Oh, well. But so long as you don't mind reading un-beta-ed work, by next Monday I should have the next installment ready. Thanks for the review! Le Rouret

Lamiel · 2 December 2003 · Chapter 14: The First Letter
Ah, this is a great chapter. I loved the description of the healer's tent being so hot and close -- so different from what we would hope a hospital would be. So Legolas' secret is out. It's bound to spread eventually -- it's hard to keep a secret like that, especially when Hallas is bound to be teased in the local bars for losing his fight. Who could resist the chance to say "it wasn't my fault, I'd beat any Man, but that's an Elf!" But maybe he's impressionable enough that he'll resist temptation for a while. It'll be easier to do that if he's kept locked in the healer's tent, poor boy. Amazing, I never thought I'd be sympathetic toward Hallas at all, but you've done a wonderful job portraying his perspective. Very, very well done.
Author's reply
Thanks, Lamiel, for your input! My beta was a little chary about my switching perspectives so often, but as I told her, "Hey, Tolkien did it; so can I!" Not that I'm up to the Great JRR's standards, but it's a convenient excuse. It's getting harder and harder to keep Legolas under wraps. Maybe for Christmas I'll "unwrap" him! Le Rouret
Coriel · 2 December 2003 · Chapter 14: The First Letter
Someone is playing a decidedly underhanded game here. I knew at once Legolas would never have written anything of the kind, and I'm glad he and Aragorn put it to rest so quickly. Hallas' reaction just goes to show again that no one can help liking Legolas once they meet him! This whole episode reminded me of an instance in a book I read, "The Shadow of His Wings", about a German seminarian drafted into the Nazi army. When he was quartered in town, an old aunt in the house to which he was assigned asked him bluntly, "Are you a respectable person? There is a young lady of marriageable age in the house, and we want no wild ones here." He just laughed and assured her, "Gnadiges Fraulein, have no fear. I am a seminarian, a Franciscan; I am not yet ordained a priest, but I am the same as one, despite this SS uniform. I have no interest in women, except as souls in need of salvation." Every Gondorian beau can rest assured that Lasgalen of Dale will maintain a hands-off attitude toward their ladies. And I can see there will be words between Hallas and his intended that might not be pleasant. Someone's jerking her chain too; most spiteful of them. I hope whoever it is meets a sticky end.
Author's reply
"The Shadow of His Wings" sounds like an interesting book -- I'll Google it and see what I come up with. Thanks for the review -- one of the things that irritates me the most with fanfics (especially about Legolas) is how "romantic" everyone makes him. Tolkien never mentioned that he even noticed whether someone were male or female, and he seemed completely disinterested in women, despite modern fanfic writers' imaginations! I'm sure I'll disappoint a few Mary Sue Wannabees, but "I gotta be me." Le Rouret
Lamiel · 25 November 2003 · Chapter 13: Brytta's Challenge
I like the change in perspective here, showing it from the opponent's viewpoint. Very effective. And if ever a knight deserved to go down, that one did. Imagine a man of Rohan using a horse like that! Terrible. I worry that the bit with Bandobras might have been too much--Hobbits aren't THAT fawning, even when they are underage. But I loved Gimli's line, "I promise I won't complain about your cooking when Legolas is dead." Hee hee! Wonderful! Lovely chapter, action packed and exciting, and I particularly liked the build to the storm. "Lightening flashed again, kindling the bat-wings . . ." Very nice. Also liked the way Brytta was unaware that he had fallen. That's very true to my experience with injuries like that. Well done. Thank you.
Coriel · 24 November 2003 · Chapter 13: Brytta's Challenge
Well I'm glad to see Legolas up and about again with hardly a crimp in his schedule. I was worried about him for a week there. And Brytta deserved as good as he got, if not more. Sheesh, you would think a man from ROHAN of all places would know how to treat a horse. Truly shameful of him. Kudos to Legolas for knocking him over the head. Inbox wide open for the next chapter alert! And to answer a previous question, I don't think you've exactly made this a cake-walk for Legolas, but even if he ekes out a hard-won victory, you know there will be some malcontent out there who will cry foul simply because he's not, well, *human*, and is thus at an unfair advantage. Is that grounds for disqualification? I can already hear the crowd . . .
Tinnuial · 24 November 2003 · Chapter 13: Brytta's Challenge
Three Cheers for the Green Knight!! :) Riveting chapter, marvellous as usual!! Just what I needed on a dreary Monday... Poor Bandobras...he really is the most endearing little thing. I wonder how Legolas felt, being compared to a cow....I've been giggling for a bit regarding that one... Thanks for posting!!
Elenora · 24 November 2003 · Chapter 13: Brytta's Challenge
I just recently stumbled onto this site and happened upon your story...rivetting!! I was thoroughly hooked and when I came to the end of chapter 13, was dismayed that I couldn't read more. This whole story has a definitely different feel to it than your average LotR fanfic story. I felt like I was right in the midst of "Ivanhoe," which is not a bad thing, since I love "Ivanhoe"! The whole sense of "middle ages" is very pronounced and your use of language and description to bring this out is very well done. I can't yet see quite where you're going with this story...I always have a tendency to see more in a story than is there, so naturally I'm suspect of the little hobbit already...I keep thinking, "Okay, who is this little guy?? He's probably not a hobbit at all!!" And I'm probably way out in left field (or even out past the fence) with that speculation. Regardless, you have hooked another Legolas/LotR fanfic reader and I'll be anxiously awaiting the next chapter. Elenora
