· Chapter 45: Guardians of the Talisman
Ouch! Spending ~100 years as prisoners/slaves just because they needed to be at the right place at the right time hurt. I can understand that the twins are not happy about it. Alas, we still don't know what the talisman is. But I think it will be revealed soon.

I like this chapter. Is it the Arkenstone? The Arkenstone was not as big as a silmaril but was of the same "carat". If it had weapon capabilities them it very well could be the Arkenstone. The silmarils were only capable of giving light...I think. With Eonwe involved...who knows! Thank you for your hard work.

Realizing that one is being shepherded into enforced servitude in this manner would be enough to make anyone bitter, I'd think. But at least we are learning the fuller story here.

Some how I don't think the jewel in the hilt is a Silmarill, considering how brilliant the Silmarill are described as being. I think it is more along the lines of the Heart of the Mountain, from the Hobbit or a very large diamond.
Any body know when the Guardians of the Talisman comes out? We'll wait until it comes out on DVD and have a viewing party at the Cliff House.:)

Eönwë is hilarious. Sorry, but there is no other word for that. *g*
So, is it a Silmaril now or is it not? Inquiring minds want to know. And if it is one, what might its purpose be? Questions, questions, questions.
Thanks for making it possible for us to read this tale. I might not review often (not nice of me, I know, but RL is a real bother at the moment), but I do read and am thankful for the opportunity to do so.

That was an interesting intervention. I wonder who interfered? A Maia or a Vala? My guess would be Namo... At least someone was looking out for our elves and whatever the artifact is they have.

Quite a bit going on here!!! I would say it was definitely one of the Ainur or even a Maiar steering things just a bit there with the Sheriff. :)
I was thinking about that knife....what if it wasn't truly a knife, but a tip of a spear made into a knife? I seem to remember a painting where the Roman guards poked Jesus on the cross with a spear...would that have made it a holy relic of sorts that might exhibit the symptoms that the Ap Hwyels (sp?) have mentioned so far? We've all been thinking Simarils (sp?), and maybe that is part of it on the hilt, but what if were also a combination of elven and human aspects together in the knife to do what it does?
On another note, (more of a question really)... the Ap twins... did we ever hear the names of their Nana and Ada? If we haven't, would it be possible that their Ada could be one of the lost sons of Dior? Maybe one survived from the sacking of their home and abandoned in the wilderness? That would be something, wouldn't it... if Elrond had an uncle and these twins are his cousins?? :D
I am looking forward to the next chapter, and eagerly look forward to every addition to the story. I will be most sorry to see it end. I have very much enjoyed all of Elf Academy, as I am sure many of us have as well.
Till next time, (and hope you and your families are on the mend there!)

It is fascinating to see how much research Fiondil did for this story! And Gwyn and Gareth's tale is getting even more interesting, if they have had a warrant waiting for them. The Templars really wanted the knife back. And also, certain people want at least as badly for the knife to remain in the brothers' keeping, if they are willing to impersonate local lords. I'm looking forward to seeing why the knife is important, and what exactly is the origin of that stone!
Finrod and Nick seem to get along well, if even sleeping at work is not a problem.

Ai, Fiondil, you do such good work. I am an avid fan of Elf Academy but very vague on Geography. Now we are much closer to home, (I live a few miles south of Birmingham in true Tolkien Country,) and I am also a fan of Ellis Peters' Cadfael Mysteries. I have spent many a happy hour following in his foot, and car, steps in Shrewsbury and the surrounding area. Fiondil makes it all so vivid. Shrewsbury is still quite a small place and suffers badly from flooding due to the way the river wraps around the town.

· Chapter 43: Message from an Archangel
After reading all of the Brother Cadfael books I feel as if I know Shrewsbury fairly well, of course; and I've driven through it more than once. Always wanted to follow the Brother Cadfael walk back when I was picking up the most recent volume at W.H. Smith's in Banbury! Heh!
Quite the place to leave the message, I must say, and Maelwys at least got his comeuppance in spades. Well, as we know that Sting, Glamdring, and Orcrist turned blue when orcs were about, I'm not surprised the ruby on this knife's blade grew hot and bright enough to blind an evil mortal intending to create mayhem.

and wished that the day would hurry on so that they could hear the rest of it.
AMEN to that!. However, patience is a virtue and it extends the time we have left to enjoy this story. Perhaps I was a bit quick to make assumptions in my last review. The Elves have a lot of memory to carry around. So. The knife is like 'Sting' in warning of danger or was Sting attuned specifically to Orcs?

more fascinating near misses and diversions. for so few and such a large world, it is amazing that the paths came so close. the breadth of fiondil's knowledge of world history and specifically culture and custom never ceases to amaze. for his and you all's willingness to share, i am eternally grateful.

· Chapter 42: Searching for Answers
The plot thickens by the week. I, too, wonder about the other 'Fair Folk'. Obviously not any of the 'Wiseman Gang.' Possibly the new Elf coming to Elf Academy incognito may have been part of the group and will shed light on the matter later, (if we get that far!). I wonder if the 'real' St Michael holds the key to this message rather than any stone statue.
Does anyone know if Fiondil enjoyed Ellis Peters' Cadfael series? Rhisiart in one of her stories, 'A Morbid Taste for Bones,' was the Lord of the manor rather than the, important but more lowly, Smith.

I don't trust this so-called Priest. What is he hiding in that church? Locking churches is a modern invention. When I grew up, churches were ever open. Maybe not the main door, but a side entrance... Lots of things to think about with this tale. The lesson for now is, don't get on the wrong side of elves. But Maelwys has seen elves? And other elves than the parents of Gwyn and Gareth? Interesting.

· Chapter 42: Searching for Answers
I was thinking that the priest might not be a priest, but rather an imposter. Maybe he came upon the incoming priest as the man was traveling to his post; found him sick, or even accosted him and took his place... Don't know. But he doesn't seem very priestly.
And a locked church? It has been my impression that churches never used to be locked, but were always open.
Definitely something wrong.
And part of me wonders if the legend of the dragon was manufactured for the villagers' benefit, to keep them away.
Other Fair Folk in the area? I wonder who they might have been.

Thank you for posting this; what a cliff-hanger.
It's good to find out more of what Gwyn and Gareth have experienced through the long ages, and to see their characters develop. I think that they have truly seen everything under the sun, yet have not become men/elves with a lust for power, but remain likeable and adaptable.
I hope that you are feeling better and that your sister is responding to treatment.

Gareth and Gwyn finally come to the place where their parents lived and nobody can/will tell them where they went. I don't trust this priest. He knows a lot more than he lets on.
