| The only one of the three Bankses with a hint of true sense, much less integrity, although not enough to disavow his dad and brother's actions. But he's botched it already, poor Cado. And his mother deserves all the help she can get after putting up with Clodio the clod all these years. Author Reply: Cado's more intelligent than his father and brother. But he's got years of conditioning to overcome. She does, poor Beryl. | |

| Oh, this litle plot line with Cado drooling over Poppy is going to be interesting! Never gave thought to the four of them fighting like cats and dogs, so the move to separate the children was a good move. Prison hits home the hardest during solitary confinement--and no! I was never in prison--just a wild guess. :-P Your Eglantine sounds like such a busy beaver! A lovely busy beaver, but always moving, never sitting on her laurels. I like her! Next project: Reggie's daughters. Pippinfan Author Reply: I'm moved slowly with the prisoners, for they of course, have a sequel to get through, so don't expect a lot of resolution yet to some of these little plot hints. I had to tie up a few loose ends before I left the Great Smials altogether, and Eglantine was glad to do that for me! | |

| I guess that the Bankses and Bracegirdle would get on each other's nerves! Cado still doesn't seem to be quite as evil as Clovis, maybe he still has time to change. If there is a hobbitess that has caught his fancy maybe he can learn to behave, I guess we will have to wait and see! I'm glad taht Eglantina and the others are planning what needs to be done next, especially where the "Jewelry" is concerned. Hm, it sounds like there is another story there, about Beryl informing Eglantina about her mother. If you already have it written somewhere, let me know? It is wonderful! I can't wait for more! Author Reply: Since they have begun to get used to the Men, they have lost some of the terror that was keeping them quiet, and with time on their hands, blame-casting and in-fighting were inevitable. Cado may have noticed Viola, but she doesn't seem to have the time of day for him. I wanted to wrap up a couple of loose ends with Opal and her sisters, and with Clodio's wife. I've not written that story yet. Like The Dare, it may yet turn into a plot bunny. | |

| Glad to see an update, especially after your little 'document loss' problem on the computer. The chapter reads quite smoothly, though it seems a bit short. You're still introducing new threads, I see. Another 10 chapters to go, at least? cheers, Maya Author Reply: Oh heavens! I certainly hope not! (I won't swear to it though; it is already almost 40 chapters longer than I originally planned.) I am planning a sequel however. Yes, this did come out quite a bit shorter than the original. *Sigh* | |

| Cado just keeps trying for trouble doesn't he? I wonder what he's about to get up to now? Eglantine is doing a fine job of seeing that everyone is fairly treated. She is an excellent Thain's wife and I am sure that Paladin is very proud of her. Author Reply: So far Cado has managed to blame all his troubles on his big brother (with a certain amount of justification, I must confess) but I thought it was time he learned that he can get in trouble all on his own. I thought Eglantine would be a good one to help me tie up some loose ends. Since things are moving on, I wanted to get "the Jewelry" settled, as well as Clodio's wife. ( It also helped me to tie up a loose end from another story as well.) Paladin is indeed proud of his Lady. She's his secret weapon. | |

| Ooh, and here I thought you were offering the possibility of redemption for Cado...and then I read the other reviews.:) So glad you got your computer to cooperate on this chapter eventually. It's an excellent read. I particularly enjoyed, in this chapter, the laugh all the lasses had over the idea that a lad would not want an intelligent wife. Author Reply: Cado's got a long way to go before he would be anywhere near ready for redemption. I am glad,too. I just can't help feeling that I lost a little something, though. As for the laugh, you know these highly intelligent hobbitesses would certainly know better--especially Eglantine! It is amazing to me, in this day and age the number of people who *still* believe in that old chestnut! | |

| Uh oh...looks like Cado may be up to something. Knowing that Viola will be traveling with them? I can only imagine what's on his mind. Maybe she should have left his nose broken after all. I'm curious to see what Reggie plans to do...whether or not his marriage will be dissolved. Seems to me that hobbits have a stronger view of marriage than some of us humans do. I can see why he might not, though. It would indeed cause more problems. I'm looking forward to seeing how that particular situation gets resolved. I suppose they could simply remain separated rather than actually divorced. And those two girls of Hyacinth's...what on earth could she have been doing to them to make them want to hide their true talents? Hyacinth sounds like a master of psychological manipulation. At least that's the impression I'm getting...tell me if I'm wrong. Keep up the fantastic work...this story does indeed seem to be winding down a bit, but there's still a good bit of loose ends to tie up. Can't wait for the next chapter! Author Reply: She can always break it for him again. 8-D I decided that since JRRT was Catholic, hobbits would not have what we think of as divorce. (He hinted at this in Letters.) I think of having the marriage disavowed as something like a legal separation, and having it dissolved (which only the Thain can do) as being something along the lines of an annullment. Hobbits do have a stronger view of marriage. JRRT specifically said that they usually take only one mate, and that widows and widowers rarely re-marry. Reggie may not wish to dissolve the marriage for his daughter's sake. Since it happens so rarely, there would be a certain amount of scandal involved. Hyacinth was like one of those mothers in the fifties who just wanted their daughters to make a good match (as in status and money, rather than true affection) and would constantly say things along the lines of "Boys don't like girls that are smarter than they are", or "You should let him win, boys don't like to be beaten by girls". As far as I know that's never really been true for a truly intelligent male--they usually want someone who can keep up with them--but the perception of it is pervasive. And yes, Hyacinth was good at manipulation. She had her own way about everything for nearly thirty years, and no one realized until the last that not only was she a silly snob, but that she was truly cold and nasty. | O my, so Cado is interested in the healer's helper? Looking forward to the journey south! (still haven't caught up on the middle chapters... I'm rather approaching them from either end. I'm sure eventually I'll have the whole thing) Author Reply: Well, Viola has caught his eye; but you'll notice she has nothing but contempt for him, and this is unlikely to change. The journey south will be a sequel. I may not be starting it right away; I have a Challenge fic and two Chapter of the Week summaries for r.a.b.t./a.f.t. coming up, and company coming this week. But I am going to try and wrap up Reckoning fairly soon. (And as I've said before, my hubby always reads books inside out. He won't buy a book of fiction if it doesn't have a happy ending.) | |

| Oh, Cado better not try anything. How can he seriously contemplate that he stands a chance with any lass now? Have you made up your mind on a sequel yet or not? I know you said before you were hesitant to write a story with mostly minor and original characters. Maybe you could try writing it as flashbacks, after they've returned to the Shire and are telling everyone what happened. *shrugs* Author Reply: Well, you notice that he *doesn't* really think he stands a chance. That doesn't keep the wheels from turning in his head. I realized a few chapters back that a sequel was inevitable. I will keep my fingers crossed about the characters. As it would involve the journey to Edoras, I would be able to incorporate Eowyn and Eomer. I have not decided how far I will take it, whether all the way to Gondor or not. | |

| *rejoices* You've updated! With several chapters since last time! Excellent as ever. So, Pippin 'fessed up with his discovery about Frodo making Merry and Pippin himself his heirs? Aww, how Frodo must've felt! Author Reply: Pip's discovery of that document really tore him up, and he never could share it with anyone before. But Pip and Merry have their heads on straight, and they had much rather have their cousin than his money. I think they made that clear to Frodo. | |
