| My husband and his ex-wife were both blind, so they put bells on their son's shoes. As you noted, it only tends to work on very small children. Thanks for the memories! Author Reply: I remember the little bells on the white stride-rite shoes on children just learning to walk and that was where part of this idea came from. I had never thought how practical it would be in a situation where the parents were blind. It must have been quite a help to them for a while at least. Thanks for reading! | |

| I am so sorry that I missed this adorable story!! I know what happened, but I'll save it for a PM. This was so clever and cute! Did you wear bells as a baby? I wonder how many women will now go out and buy tiny bells and sew them to their baby's nappy! It sort of reminds me of a little red tricycle we kids shared as preschoolers; the wheels squeaked. My sister and I asked our mother why she never oiled the axles. She said if she did that, she'd never know where we were. Clever. Your story is brilliant! Pippinfan Author Reply: I didn't wear bells, but I remember them on the baby shoes of so many little ones in the past. Do you remember the stride-rite white baby shoes with the jingle bells that were tied into the laces? That is how this story came about. I like your mom's plan with the squeaky wheels. I had to had the bells sewen into Pippin pants because of a lack of little shoes to put them onto. Thanks for the review! | |

| lol! I can absolutely see the need to put bells on Pippin. A very sweet and enjoyable story! Author Reply: I believe that it would have been very hard to keep up with a tiny Pippin at the stage where little ones love to explore. His curious nature and talent for trouble would have made him a major challenge and poor Merry had to have a life of his own, so bells were deffinately needed. | I just loved the level of Pippin teasing here. And the embarrassing tales of childhood. It's delightful to see Frodo and Merry up to (mild) mischief together. I can just see the jingle bells name coming out at some appropriate moment on the quest! Author Reply: I like stories with a bit of mischeif in them and I like to include Frodo now and again. I figure even at this age, he was up for a bit of harmless fun with Merry. Would have been very funny for that nickname to crop up along with the explanation for it on the quest. | Oh...my...goodness. It is a _very_ good thing that I read this after all my 5th grade students were out of the building (I needed an imagination break after class) because I was giggling hard enough to make them question my sanity! Wonderful characterization and dialogue - I could just hear and see this conversation in my mind. You do hobbits so very well. Author Reply: Why, thank you very much! I am very glad that you enjoyed it. I sometimes worry that I am using too much dialogue. My characters, like me, talk way too much. LOL Good luck with the fifth graders and have a lovely holiday! | |

| Oh, delightful! And it was clever of you to keep adding more little elaborations to the basic story. I laughed so at little Pippin eating the bells, and Merry shaking him like a rattle, and then of course the "find Pippin" game. Author Reply: I have play the find me game with little ones before and they love it. I always was amused by the way they would come to check on me if I didn't find them quickly enough. LOL A little child with bells on wouldn't stand a chance at hide'n' seek and so once the bells were off, I am sure Pippin had a great time hiding for the grown-ups. | I loved that! I like when you mix a present story with a past one and you do better than most! We use to put bells on our kittend because she was so tiny and we never knew where she was so we stepped on her! I have my own little cousins though who it would work splendidly if I tied bells to them! Much like Pippin and always into everything! I'll have to try it! Merry's reaction to Pippin's jingling was great, falling out of the chair and everything I was laughing right along with him! Thanks for the fun! Author Reply: Thank you! I had two stories in mind on this and so I put them together. I didn't think I should write two "jingle bells" stories. I have seen little children with bells in the laces of their shoes before and that was were the idea started. Since the Hobbits don't wear shoes, I just had the bells sewed to the clothing. Sounds like it worked great for keeping up with your kitten. Let me know how it works with the little cousins. Happy Holidays! | |
