Oh no! If Merry is worried enough to keep away from the gathering of hobbits, he is really worried about Pippin. Although his absence might be a good thing for Other Reasons. Between the Tookish lullabies and threats of honey-laced food and drink, they're managing to subdue Pippin. Now all they need to do is cure him! Author Reply: Other Reasons... I can only imagine that you are referencing the looming Plot Point that threatens an otherwise carefully-knit story. Yes, it might be Awkward for Merry to have a heart-to-heart talk with his Uncle Merry. That is what you meant, isn't it? Or is there something else I need to be aware of? Hmmm. Will have to add that to the Manual on Keeping Tooks Abed. "Subdue with Tookish lullabies and threats of (fill in the blank with food-fusses -- in Pippin's case, honey, and in Merry's, liver)" (Thanks!)

Oh, poor Pippin! Now I am really worried about him. At first you had me more worried about Merry but of course, he couldn`t leave Pip, not when he is so ill as he is now. Lovely chapter! Author Reply: Of course he couldn't leave Pippin! I wonder why Pippin-angst is so much easier to write than Merry-angst? Because Merry is less likely, with all his forethought and preparedness, to get himself into scrapes? Was he always that way, or did Frodo have to rescue him quite a few times before he developed caution? Inquiring minds want to know... (and you do write Merry so wonderfully... hint hint) Thanks!

That was so like Pippin to think that he was dying and that Merry was staying close because of him. I love Esmeralda'a way with him. She settled him rather quickly. I was pleased to see that you had posted another chapter in spite of your computer woes. I am so spoiled for mine that my hand writing isn't readable anymore. If I had a story on paper, I would never translate my own scribble. Oh, been meaning to ask this one. In all of the fictions that I have read by you, Pippin hates honey. Is there a story behind it in a fiction that I've missed or is it just a matter of taste with him? I am amused by it and wondered if there was more to it. Author Reply: My handwriting is for the most part readable, though sometimes on LOTR fic I get to writing so fast it begins to resemble a scribble. At which times I always think of Christopher Tolkien's notations in one of his HOME books, where he's quoting his father's writing and then you come up against (illegible) and you understand--JRRT was "in the flow" and couldn't stop for such mundane concerns as handwriting! There is a story behind his hating honey. He didn't hate it in Tom Bombadil's house (or at least no mention of it! I'd be pleasantly surprised if there were), so this story is set after he returns from the Quest. Do you remember, in "Thain" (if you've read it) how Folco tried to sneak some mead and fell into a vat? Well, what if he persuaded Pippin, taller now after the Quest, to help him on another attempt...? Don't know if that story will get written any time soon, but it always makes me chuckle.

Poor Pip! Fearing he's dying and no one telling him. ‘He is supposed to meet Merimac in the Woody End this evening,’ Pippin said, ‘yet he has made no sign of stirring. He ought to be in the thick of the preparations! He’s the most—the most—preparingest hobbit I ever knew!’ Wonderful!!! Simply wonderfully put!!! VWD as always :) Author Reply: Goodness, poor Pippin! Makes me think of a story where he's ill and he overhears conversation about someone dying and thinks they're talking about him! Thanks!

Lin, I simply love this story. To see the interaction between Pippin and Esmeralda is a pure joy. I really like seeing Pippin and Esmie interact. They are a lot alike, whether others see it or not. Poor Pippin, worrying about dying and all. Sad to hear he's taken a turn for the worse again. Hope your computer does get fixed this week. I'm looking forward to the rest of the story. Thanks. Connie B. Author Reply: I do love to write Pippin and his Auntie together. Someday perhaps I'll have to write out the entire incident of her taking him over her knee when he thought he was safely beyond such things. Was able to type in the next chapter with no crashes! Hoorah!

I loved Pippin's description of Merry. But Poor Pippin! Taking a turn for the worse! Great chapter! I hope your computer is fixed soon! Author Reply: Yes, I'd keep my fingers crossed but that it makes it difficult to type. Still, it ran all yesterday afternoon without overheating, and dh worked it hard, far into the night hours and had no complaints. Whew. Thanks!

"We've been promised repair some time this week. Let us hope." Let us fervently hope! Computer woes are the pits! (Keeping my fingers crossed for you, and hoping all those little gremlins have gotten their fill and will now move on...) Poor Pippin! He knows his cousin so well. I loved this line: " 'He ought to be in the thick of the preparations! He’s the most—the most—preparingest hobbit I ever knew!’ " LOL! A better description of Merry Brandybuck I never heard! And it would be scary to Pippin to know that Merry was not doing what he expected him to. So Tom Bombadil was over in the Barrow Downs when the Orcs came in! That would explain it. His absence was the one thing that worried me most in "Seeing the Forest" as I could just not imagine his not having dealt with the problem before it became so dire. And then Pippin takes a turn for the worse, and Merry does stay by his side. Seems he did have a premonition after all. Author Reply: So far, so good. The repairman feared the motherboard might have taken harm, heat-fused as it was to the fan casing (how I winced as he pried the pieces apart!) but the computer is running better than it ever ran before. I now have a word-processor again, and not just an expensive hand-warmer. Hmmm. Might have to invest in electric gloves now. Happy thought!
