| One of the pitfalls of fanfiction is that certain scenes—like Merry’s reaction to Frodo’s departure—have been written so many times, it can be difficult to come up with a fresh approach. You’ve done that very nicely here! Merry’s desire to appropriate Frodo’s room rang very true to me…much like a younger sibling might react when their big brother goes off to college. And I loved how his “big boy” attitude, not wanting Esmeralda to touch him, dissolved into little boy dependence by the end. Author Reply: Thank you. | Saradoc's only the muscle of the family? I love Merry coming to understand. I can understand his feeling of abandonment. Author Reply: I think what Saradoc was, was clever enough to let Esmeralda handle the problem. LOL I do think that Frodo's move had to be very difficult for Merry. | You have caught the emotions involved in this beautifully GW. I really loved the flying leap at Saradoc. Thank goodness for wise parents. Just a thought - you could have had this finishing with Merry 'borrowing' Frodo's room so that they could re-decorate his room so that it was for an older lad and not a baby any longer! Might have helped Merry move on even more and give him something to show Frodo later. Author Reply: That's a wonderful idea that you have there. It would have worked into the story quite well. I hadn't thought of that when I was writing this one. One of these days I may have to go back and put that in. Thank you for the review and the interesting idea too! | |

| Bless all their hearts! I'm glad Merry wants his mum and dad. A wonderful story indeed :) Author Reply: Thank you! I thought Merry might not leave if he realized that someone else would be just as sad to see him go as he was to see Frodo leave. | Good bit of Merry management here! And suggesting that Bilbo might be able to take him in - but that neither Esmeralda nor Saradoc would be there - is probably a good help in enabling their obstinate inventive little son to realise that Frodo is missing his parents. Even if it can't altogether reconcile him to losing his surrogate big brother. And strawberry scones might well tempt him to put off further thoughts of leaving home. For a while, at least! Author Reply: I think it would have taken Merry a while to adjust to Frodo's move. Eight is not very old to try and understand things like grief and serious choices, especially if the eight-year-old has never had to deal with either. Glad you enjoyed it. I do think that comfort food would work quite well with a little hobbit but I am sure that there was more trouble over Frodo's move later on. | |

| “Your mother is a very smart hobbit,” Saradoc said, with a wink at Esmeralda. That she is, indeed! Esme did a wonderful job in explaining Merry why Frodo had to leave. And finally Merry understood! He is also a very smart lad. I liked that bit about the sheet underneath the box to make moving easier. Thank you Grey Wonderer for this vivid story! Author Reply: I think that Esmeralda and Saradoc must have been very clever or they could never have kept up with Merry. LOL Glad you liked it. | Oh, my gosh...what can I say? I am melted like butter. :-) This was aweome, beautiful...wonderfully done. You must have a window into my brain because I have often thought about Merry's reaction to Frodo's leaving...and this is exactly how I pictured it in my head. The emotional pitch was perfect. | Oh, I'm so glad you decided to put this here! I remember this one, and it's delightful. Esmeralda and Saradoc are so sweet and understanding. Such a treat to see it here this morning, it was a nice way to start the day! Poor Merry. But I'm sure he'll be paying a visit to Frodo very soon! Author Reply: Thank you.
