Beyond The Dimrill Gate  by Jay of Lasgalen 16 Review(s)

Now THERE'S a declaration to stop Farin in his prejudices! Heh! That Elf-witch IS the mother to the wife of Elrond of Rivendell, after all!

And I'd never considered that they might have misidentified the terror that dwells in Moria as a Dragon. Yes, it makes sense, even though WE know it's not.

Excellent--a group to precede Balin's company.

Hehehe - oh I just loved the ending....

Nice job pullihng the Dwarves in like that - and having one be of the company of Thorin was great too - I loved Elladan's compliment.

And I'm glad they're not going to be fighting - too much other stuff to contend with. And a dragon *giggles slyly*

Great chapter!!! It was such fun to see the Dwarves - and the little dig that Elladan was able to give! And a dragon - that does make sense, though we all know it's not...

Nice...
I love the exchange between the darwves and Elladan and the others. Especially the other darwves insulting Elrohir and thought Elladan didn't know...Nice... and the surprise telling them that thier grandmother was Lady of the wood...

Poor Elrohir, he is exhausted for sure. And love that you reintroduced the story of when he exhausted himself once again...nice...

Keep up the good work...

I absolutely loved that last line about his grandmother. What a hoot! And I know he desperately wanted to follow that comment with some rude elvish hand gesture.

Another excellent chapter!

Well, the dwarves were a surprise. I loved the initial unpleasant words exchanged. "The only good elf is a dead elf" and "Stunted dirt digger". So typical and yet I didn't see it coming. I'm glad Estel was mature enough to know he couldn't keep watch all night without endangering everyone and that Elladan was able to convince him that he really was proud of him for that.

Nice reminders of your earlier stories. This time I do know more than Estel :)
And after the earlier irritations, it is good that Estel recognised his limitations – and Elladan acknowledged it. I think Estel needed this confirmation.

The dwarves are quite a surprise. Well, why not? Somehow it seems plausible that Balin did send some scouts ahead before he went to re-establish Moria as realm of the dwarves, though I wonder why they came, considering what the scouts found there. Only a pity for the dwarves they encountered just some of the probably very few elves who understand Khuzdul *eg* Seeing how much they esteem Elrond, maybe they are inclined to help the three sons of Elrond to find their way out. But maybe not, considering their opinion of Galadriel. I am not sure if it was wise of Elladan to tell them the ‚witch’ is their grandmother, but admittedly I enjoy it to imagine the faces of the dwarves after this revelation *grin*

A dragon? Now, I can see why they thought that. For them, it seemed probably more likely than the balrog.

Another fabulous chapter! Suprised that they run in to Dwarves never thought of that with all the Orc's running around and the hmmm...Dragon.I'm happy to see Estel so pleased to take the first watch Elladan must trust him again and hope Elrohir heals enough before another skirmish thanks Please update soon.

Oh, dwarves, I so like your dwarves. Just strolling down the great hall like they belonged they, which of course they do. I see the old distrust between dwarves and elves is still there.
Glad that Estel passed the watch over, otherwise he would have nodded off, and the dwarves would have gone right by.
Hmmmm, a dragon, well that could have been the explaination, of the evil they feel. We know better thou.

Author Reply: I keep dropping all sorts of hints about the Balrog, but E3 aren't listening! Now they think it's a dragon - but there had to be something for them to discover, or they'd have keep looking.

I'm so glad you like the dwarves! They're not exactly friends with elves, but they are all on the same side - and that will have to be enough for now.

What bold - if rather foolhardy - dwarves! I love the eye-narrowed well-for-elves-Elrond's-OK sort of suspicion that made them decide to tolerate E3. And E2's revelation of their skills with Khuzdul! I suspect that revealing their family bond with the Witch of the Golden Wood won't increase their popularity, though.

But I suppose, for Balin to go to Moria, there must have been a variety of those who went to look - and didn't see anything bad enough to stop them going. After all, dwarves aren't daft! They wouldn't have tried to re-occupy Moria if they'd known it was up to its armpits in orcs.

Poor Elrohir. It's just as well Elladan can support him in more ways than the physical, but soooooo draining! Estel showed his maturity by realising that he couldn't let Elladan sleep (it's hardly the place to fall asleep on guard). I'd love to know just how Glorfindel reacted to Elladan's lapse - have you written it, or is it one of those possibilities to look forward to?

I hope they're all relatively safe at the moment. They really need some time to recover before the next round of exercise starts!

Author Reply: Elladan's tired and worried - he's a little touchy. It might have been best to keep the information about Galadriel to themselves, and he couldn't help snapping at that dwarf - though at least he's got the words right ;)

I decided it would be in keeping with canon if Balin sent someone ahead to check out Moria - so along came Farin. The dwarves' knowledge could be useful.

Estel is proving his maturity time and again in this adventure. I was going to let him keep watch alone all night, but then decided it would show his growth even more if he realised he couldn't do it. That was the first moment that Elladan's lapse came to life - I must write it one day :)
