Elf, Interrupted: Book One: Glorfindel Redux  by Fiondil 9 Review(s)
hawkeyeReviewed Chapter: 13 on 9/20/2014
They're finally together again! I think I was cheering when I read this. Unfortunately it looks like there are still some problem people in Arafinwë's court, but hopefully between Glorfindel, Finrod and Sador they can sort that out. If not, I'll straighten them out for him ;)

And Sador. I'm so happy he's still here, and I think Arafinwë was wonderful taking him into the family. I know it's not the same, but seeing as he's lost his other two sons maybe he can have two others in the mean time? Perhaps I'm oversimplifying things.

I can't believe Amarië still hasn't figured things out. *sigh* I was hoping after all this time maybe she had learned something. She's always struck me as a wonderful and amazingly loyal person, but apparently she's got some growing to do in some areas. Not to say that we all don't but...

It was fun to see Námo again. I guess now that everyone is released we might not see as much of him, which is sad. Hopefully he comes around more too.

Thank you for making my day. Given the trouble those two were, having them released probably made Námo's day too, although I get the impression he's rather fond of both of them ;)

Author Reply: Hi hawkeye. Yes, they're finally together. Unfortunately, there are still those in Arafinwë's court who do not approve of the Reborn for a variety of reasons and that is something that is addressed throughout this story.

We'll see how Amarië "sees the light" about all this in a later chapter. There's still hope for her.

And don't worry. We'll be seeing Námo on a pretty regular basis, though admittedly he won't be as in-your-face about things now that these Reborn are no longer in his personal care, but he will have an important role to play. I'm sure Námo is happy to see these two no longer in his care, but he is rather fond of them anyway.

Thanks for reviewing. It's much appreciated.

Well, they're reunited at last! Glad to see it. And now Arafinwe has THREE sons to deal with (again)! I bet the Feanturi wish him joy of them...at least Glorfi, lol.

~Kaylee!!

Author Reply: I'm sure the Feanturi and all the Valar are glad that Arafinwe now has sons back. His other two sons are still in Mandos and it will be some time before they are released, but with Glorfi and Sador there it will makes things easier for both Arafinwe and Earwen.

Amarie has much to learn herself if she would be happily married to the ellon she's loved for so long--now she will herself begin to learn compassion. And she sees before her a lord in his own right, one who knows true nobility, rejoicing in all of noble spirit he meets, whether trained as potters or born first son to the King of the Noldor within Aman. She will learn, it is to be hoped.

Author Reply: Amarië has her own issues, but she is not irredeemable, and will learn where true nobility lies.

Hey Fiondil! *waves* Yes, I'm re-reading whilst awaiting more updates. *grin* And I noted that the note from Námo is different in the text and in the notes. In the text it is: Anglenna vellon gîn in Ennyn Aderthad - while in your notes it is: Mellon gîn anglenna in Ennyn Aderthad. I am attempting to learn some Sindarin (sadly lacking and not making much progress either) So... which is it? *grin*

NiRi

Author Reply: Actually, both are correct. *grin* However, to avoid confusion and in line with Finrod's Quenya translation I've changed Namo's note in the text to reflect the translation in the notes section. Thanks for pointing it out to me. Happy re-reading!

Well, I finally have time to begin reviewing again.

I enjoyed seeing Finrod go from being an adult to an elfling again in his reactions to the message from Lord Námo. His caroling "He's coming, he's coming, he's coming" as he burst into his father's study just made me smile.

I truly felt for Finrod when Pelendur was making his snarky comments. And his reaction to the prejudice and bigotry of the other advisor against the Sinda brings back memories of hearing my grandfather make similar comments about persons of certain ethnicity back when I was a little girl. I was just as stunned by it as Finrod seems to be here. Luckily, over time my grandfather lost his prejudices and even apologized for them. But Arafinwë's advisors don't seem to the be type to let their prejudices go. What's very unfortunate is that even today in our world there are people who believe that people of different ethnicity, race or abilities are inferior to themselves and therefore don't deserve respect. That kind of thinking just makes my blood boil!

Arafinwë earned even more respect from me with his offer to accompany Finrod to meet Glorfindel. But as far as Amarië goes, I can only shake my head and hope that she opens her eyes and grows up eventually.

Do you remember back when they would let you meet someone who traveled by airplane at the gates? Finrod's worry and impatience as he waits for Glorfindel reminded me of standing in the waiting area staring at the door to the boarding tunnel wanting my Dad to come through from the plane after he'd been gone on a business trip. Waiting for someone to come past the TSA checkpoint just doesn't seem to have the same emotional effect. But all I mean to say by this is that I could very easily identify with Finrod's feelings and actions. He's obviously feeling very young again.

Oh, I would have liked to witness Finrod and Glorfindel's reunion in person. I wouldn't have been nonplussed at all. I've doen my share of such greetings myself. Finrod's introduction of his father to Glorfindel is so very funny. It is obvious that he is still in elfling mode. So much for protocol!

Arafinwë's reaction to the offhand introduction was wonderful. He's very understanding and it's more than obvious he has a well-developed sense of humor.

Finrod's immediate acceptance of Sador was wonderful. What a relief it must have been for the Reborn potter to not be facing his new life entirely on his own. Hopefully Amarië's attitude will change. At he very least, she's being incredibly rude.

I thought I was going to fall out of my chair laughing at Lord Námo's impression of a whiny Glorfindel. It was so very funny. I was glad to see that Námo was there to bid his favourite balrog-slayer farewell.

So our Reborn elves are on their way to begin their new lives. Why do I get the feeling that life is going to become very interesting for the royal family very shortly?

Well written and an enjoyable read, mellon-nin! I'll try to get some more reviewing done tomorrow.

May you lived blessed,

Edlyn

Author Reply: I'm sure many of us have had the experience of waiting impatiently for someone's arrival and seeing all the other passengers arrive with no friend or family member in sight and wondering if they missed their connection or something, and then, suddenly you see them and the entire world seems that much brighter for you at that moment. That's pretty much how Finrod feels at this point.

Arafinwë shows throughout this story that he doesn't take himself too seriously. I know any number of people in our world who could learn from Arafinwë's example, though I know they wouldn't.

Námo's imitation of Glorfindel is quite funny and right on, but he isn't malicious about it and I think Glorfindel realizes it and so doesn't take objection to it. And I'm pretty sure that the other Once-born elves listening to the by-play between Námo and Glorfindel and Finrod were wondering if this was the same Lord of Mandos they were supposed to be afraid of. *grin*

Ow. Some drastic change in attitude is really needed.
Finrod is great, his impatience is endearing. But it must be strange to see adults behaving like children.
When seeing elves' different reactions to Námo, one would say those "once-born" missed something.
Royal family now numbering six, two of them Finrod and Glorfindel, and young Sador - can't wait for the next chapter!

Author Reply: It must have been difficult for many elves who watched the Noldor leave Aman as Rebels under a Curse to see them return as innocent Reborn. They must have thought there was something wrong with that picture. And then there were those Moriquendi...

Glad you are enjoying the story. New chapters will be posted at least once a week.

That kinslayer didn't seem to have managed to come to terms with his past properly! Although it seems that he would probably have found some of the once-born were in agreement with his feelings towards the elves of Endore, even if they managed to dislike his kinslaying proclivities. What a nasty bunch of snobby elves the Blessed Realm seems to possess! I hope Finarfin places his foot very firmly on some necks - and that Finrod and Glorfindel and Sador manage to readjust some thinking before Manwe feels forced to come down and administer a few firm rebukes.

I love the combination of very young innocent enthusiasm and traces of mature adulthood that the Reborn show. Watching Finrod and Glorfindel play like puppies must be very disconcerting to Finrod's parents.

Most enjoyable.

Author Reply: Sometimes not even a stint in Mandos does any good (look what happened with Melkor!). But hopefully Irmo and Olórin will straighten him out. I think you will see in future chapters that Manwë has already set things in motion where the Reborn are concerned. And watching Finrod and Glorfindel play like puppies probably is a bit disconcerting to Finrod's parents, especially when they are probably remembering that after childhood comes adolescence. *Grin* Glad you are enjoying the story so far. More to come.

I really enjoyed reading this when I woke up this morning ,what a treat,I am impressed with all your knowledge of the elves and their languages, its way over my head sometimes, its also kinda of weird to see Glorfindle as helpless as he goes thru his different things before he is released but it goes to my heart I have almost cried at some points in the story(sniff) I cant wait for more as usual its such a lovely story Oh and Merry Christmas! Thanks for writing!

Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing! Tolkien revolved his great tales around the Elvish languages and I like to do it too. And I'm glad (as a writer) that I have brought you to tears a time or two in the telling of this tale. And Merry Christmas to you, too!

you pack in so much stuff in so little space! I have to go back & reread some stuff to get everybody reorganized in my brain... this is such an interesting story............

Author Reply: And I would finish writing a chapter, emotionally drained, look at the clock to see I've just spent the last three hours writing, look at the number of pages I've written and I'm shocked I've only written 3-4 pages. I am as amazed at how much I pack into a single chapter as any sometimes. I'm glad you find this such an interesting story. I hope I can continue keeping your interest. Thanks for reviewing. I really appreciate your input.
