Oh! Oh, poor Frodo...talk about "mood whiplash"! The last story was so adorable and sweet, with Drogo, Primula, Bilbo and little Frodo so happy together, and now...well...gulps Poor Frodo!! Kaylee Author Reply: Yes, poor Frodo. sigh

oh, sniff this is so poignant (sp). Frodo knows it's okay to cry with Bilbo holding him. Author Reply: Yes, he's finally able to let go. Bilbo knows when it's right to insist, and when it's not.

The poor lad! :( That would have been a very hard Yule for him but Bilbo's there and he had a good cry which would have helped too. Namarie, God bless, Antane Author Reply: It had to be hard for him, but Bilbo knew what he needed! And yes, in spite of what some people say, a good cry can help!

Ahhhh, heartbreaking! A brilliant depiction though, Dream. Of course it was Bilbo who was able to bring him out of it, Bilbo who understood what it was to feel truly alone, even in the midst of a crowd. Bilbo who didn't have any responsibilities to which he should be attending who was able to simply come in and be there with him, instead of inviting him out where he couldn't bring himself to be. Such a wrenching picture of him sobbing in Bilbo's arms, but warming as well. You brought out those two conflicting emotions very very well. Author Reply: Yes, Bilbo understood. And you are quite right in why he was able to offer the comfort. More than that, Bilbo was willing to take the risk of pushing. Saradoc and Esmeralda are almost too careful in their handling of Frodo's grief--they are afraid to make things worse by intruding. As much as they love him, they fear his reaction. Bilbo has the wisdom to know that sometimes you have to take that risk.

"They close the door behind them, leaving the darkness inside." Another wonderful last line! Along with a touching tale! Author Reply: Thank you! I thought it just seemed to summarize the theme.

Another proof for the special relationship Bilbo shared with Frodo. Poor little lad, how devastated he must have been after losing both parents at the same time and so early in his life. It is good to know there are some people around him who care so much for him and try their best to help him, even if he doesn't want to be helped at the moment. Author Reply: Yes, he's surrounded by those who care--but they aren't the ones he wants. And Saradoc and Esmeralda are too patient and gentle with him--they fear him pushing them away altogether. Bilbo, though, seems to know that he must push, to get through to Frodo.

Oh, I can see young Frodo having difficulties leaving the darkness behind, having used it as a protective shield against the great lonliness he must have felt. Bless his little heart! Excellent! Pippinfan Author Reply: Sometimes being in the darkness is a soothing thing, and yet, ultimately it does not bring peace--only the light can do that.

Yes, I can certainly understand such a scene. I wonder if it was anything like this for my brother the first Christmas after our dad died when he was so small. I don't remember, of course, for I was only a baby. But Frodo was old enough to need and accept the comforting in this manner. Author Reply: It's very hard to lose a parent at such a young age, as I know, and it casts a pall over everything that comes after, for a good long while. And for Frodo, who lost them both and in such a horrid and traumatic matter, it was pivotal. Bilbo fortunately knew when to push a bit. Saradoc and Esmeralda were just a little too cautious of his feelings.

Oh, sniff. REaches for one of Bilbo's hankies too! Author Reply: Yes, this had to be poor Frodo's hardest Yule ever, his first without his parents, and him so young!
