| The first three made me sad, though I knew their lads were, indeed, safe. The last one just made me laugh. I suppose Miss Dora would not Object to my feeling Amused at Lobelia's Expense? | Wow! What great peeks into all of these households! Each one was affected a bit differently from the others after the four hobbits left the Shire. Good tale. Author Reply: Yes, something different in each family--just as each of the four hobbits who left were different. | |

| How trying and difficult those days must have been. Having to put on a brave face while fearing the worst couldn't have been easy for any of them. Author Reply: Well, your note must have worked! I finally got the notice for these reviews! Yes, that had to be a good deal of the worst of it--trying to be optimistic in the face of all that was happening! | |

| Well - in Buckland, Tookland and Bagshot Row, the hope for next year is postive and an outcome of love. Thinking of and missing those absent. Lobelia, on the other hand! Selfish. And I'm glad she didn't get to be Queen Bee of the Shire. Author Reply: Yes, it's quite a contrast: the others are sorely missed and worried over. But Lobelia is all wrapped up in her own selfish ambitions, and even though she knows why the others all shunned her and Lotho, she still somehow thinks that they will come around to grovel at her feet. | |

| These are wonderful!! So full of feeling. And I feel sorry for poor Lobelia, for her next year won't be good at all. I was always so glad that Tolkien had her have a change of heart. MEWD!! Author Reply: Yes, Lobelia is about the have the worst year ever; sadly, it is mostly her own doing. I, too, am glad she repented at the end. Thanks! | |

| Good for Saradoc with his steadfast belief, and what a pity Paladin didn't have the same faith. Rose did though! I love that look at her foresight in the epilogue. As for Lobelia........ she has no self-awareness and no common sense, does she? Sadly for her, her little world is about to come crashing down. Author Reply: Well, Saradoc was just stubborn enough to hang tough. Paladin had a number of reasons that things were harder for him, and he let pride and temper get in the way of realizing that hope could still be found. Like you, I love the tiny bit of Rose's faith that we are shown, and wish it had been in the book. As for Lobelia........ she has no self-awareness and no common sense, does she? You hit the nail bang on the head. She is far too self-absorbed to be self-aware. It takes some detachment to achieve that. And she has long dreamed of being the all-powerful matriarch of Bag End--whether that dream was ever justified or not. | |

| A little chilling; the fear for the travellers comes through very well. I do feel so sorry for poor Frodo though, not a Baggins to miss him. Well, maybe there was, but certainly there's not a thought in Lobelia's head for him. But at that time next year, they really were back, safe...and changed. God bless, Galadriel Author Reply: They do fear for them so much--not knowing or having a clue as to what's happened to them. As for no Baggins to miss Frodo, that's something he was well aware of (though perhaps he was missed more than he thought). In fact, my Frodo once told Boromir that the only people in the Shire likely to have missed him came with him--an exaggeration, I think, for Sara and Esme and many others were sure to have missed him also. Lobelia's only thought for him at this point is "good riddance". She little knows how his absence is going to affect her life. | |

| Oh, the responsibilities of being a leader. Poor Saradoc, putting a mask over his true feelings of anxiety over Merry. I like Peridot--and I feel bad for Paladin's despair. I know it's because he loved his son so much and knowing the circumstances surrounding Pippin's disappearance, but I like Peridot's hope. I know the Professor wrote Rosie's heart-felt hope for her Sam in the Scouring, ROTK, but I still want to cheer the lass on! :-) As for Lobelia...she made her bed, now she can sleep in it. These were all wonderful glimpses into the lives of those who were left behind. Thank you for sharing your lovely Yule imagination! :-) Author Reply: He had to show his confidence, and make all believe that things would be all right--even in spite of his doubts and fears. Paladin, however, could not seem to do that--he was so sure Pippin was dead. Peridot always had a special relationship to Pippin, and she thought with her heart and not her head--and was right. Yes, Rosie's confidence in Sam is canon, and I'm very glad for that!! She truly was worthy of him. Lobelia had some grandiose ideas--she hoped to swan it over the rest of the Bagginses in much the way Lalia had once done over the Tooks. Didn't work out that way, though. And she will probably get precious little sleep before it's all over with. | |

| Oh, but he WANTED to be the head of the Bagginses; but I doubt even the few Sackvilles about truly want him, either, though their stuck with him as family head. And at least all the ones who spoke of next year were right save for Lobelia.... Poor Lobelia. That wasn't a good one for her. Author Reply: Yes, Lotho wanted to be the head of the Bagginses, and as we saw, of the Shire--though it wasn't really his to want. Even if Frodo had moved to Buckland, and Bag End being in S.-B. hands did not truly make him head of the Bagginses unless Frodo died or had given it over to him. This is why, in my Shire, most of the hobbits (except for those in Buckland, and for Freddy Bolger, who know better) believe the raid on Crickhollow was orchestrated by Lotho, in order to get Frodo out of his way permanently. Much easier to believe than in un-dead Kings with Rings of Power. No. The next year would have been anything *but* good for her-- | |
