Awesome, Citrine! "Oh, the Brandywine was a tricksy thing, wasn't she, and she had taken many an older, wiser hobbit with more knowledge of her ways than one foolish young Brandybuck. He was easy prey. The boat turned smoothly in the current and over he went on his head, and she swallowed him down like a trout gulping a fly." Beautiful description!

I remember seeing this before! I'm so glad you posted it here--it was lovely to re-read it. I love the way Pippin just had such absolute faith in Merry, in spite of everything. And I'd love to have seen the aftermath of this. I'm surprised Merry's parents didn't ground him until he came of age! Author Reply: Hah, that's an idea, maybe I'll write a droubble or something, if the little hobbit voices ever get back from their vacation. Hope hobbit-parents aren't into corporal punishment...

Even the most innocent of outings can turn into Adventures! he had just went, because Merry was leaving him behind, sinking down and away under a froth of green-brown river, and he couldn't go away without Pippin, could he? How darling, and oh so loving. Author Reply: Sometimes a scary sort of adventure...but not too scary. My angst-o-meter seemed to be on the fritz with this one. La la la, wonder how that happened. *Hides hammer and broken parts* Thanks Shirebound:o)

Oh, dear, Merry did overestimate his own skill while underestimating that of his small cousin, didn't he? Glad this one worked out right. Author Reply: He underestimated the river (quoth the former river-rat.) Rivers, especially bigger rivers, are alive and they have a disturbing tendency to want to eat careless people...or hobbits, in this case.
