Elf, Interrupted: Book One: Glorfindel Redux  by Fiondil 10 Review(s)

Vorondil does seem to put himself into things fully, doesn't he?

Author Reply: Well, this time it wasn't entirely his fault. *grin*

Fiondil, I have a question! What (or where) Finrod is seeing sounds suspiciously like Durin's Crown...? I noticed that little anomaly before, but forgot to ask...Loving this story to the point of "dropping back in time" for the purpose of keeping all the plot lines straight!

BC

Author Reply: Hi Cat. No this isn't Durin's Crown. That's in Middle-earth and Finrod is standing on Taniquetil looking across the Pelóri mountains. He's merely seeing a mountain tarn that seems to reflect the stars even though it's broad daylight. Probably somthing Varda thought up. *grin*

Fiondil, while looking at the table of contents page for 'Elf Interrupted' I do hope you know that for Chapter 108 it says Finarato not Findarato! Well, that is just so if you are able to correct the error!

Namarie!

Author Reply: Thanks Nariel. I'm surprised no one else picked up on it and I certainly didn't! I have since made the correction.

Uh...Sorry! I just forgot to add this to my other review on the same chapter when I had kept reminding myself mentally while writing the main part of the review to add it at the end, but here it is then!

Thank you for putting Amarie back in after all my nagging sort of for the past few weeks! I sort of want to see Finrod's actions when meeting up with her again. (Yeah...in a way I have been just counting down for her to yell(maybe not yell) at him...) I cannot wait for the tournament though. Though I keep having a feeling Finrod is going to lose! I just cannot imagine seeing him winning against someone like Glorfindel... Finrod is just, well... TOO much of a scholar type of person (at least to my opinion). Nice Sador! You finally remembered to tell them! I like how you made Sador tell Finrod and Glorfindel about THEIR gift for Amarie right when they were stressed enough. That was the perfect moment Fiondil to add that little note.

I cannot wait to arrive at the chapters for the tournaments!

Namarie!

P.S. this might be my shortest review yet!

Author Reply: Amarië will probably feature a bit more in the next few chapters involving the tournament.

Sador is bright enough to warn his brothers about the gift but just young enough to enjoy watching them squirm (Finrod especially). That's what younger siblings are for, after all.

As to who wins the tournament.... only time will tell.

Hi! I was a bit busy for the past few days (reading and buying quite a few books!), but I do realize you had updated TWO hcapters to your story!

Just how does Finrod appear at a place SO fast? It's like he has super speed!

It's a good thing Finrod inherited the generous and noble spirit of the Vanyar or else he would be insane by now having to deal with the Valar (...and Namo not least!), being a Reborn, taking up his duties as the ELdest (and only) Prince of the Noldor in Valinor, Glorfindel's recklessness, hostile Eldar, and lastly little Vorondil who happens to cause MANY problems. One more thing to top it off, his oath to make the Valar pay for Elenwe's death!

It's nice that you gave the Herald something else to do other than stand before the doors of Ilmarin and wait upon the Elder King.

I do like the little flashback you had in the story. It's so emotional and the events were so important but coming at a fast pace at the end of the chapter though that I had to reread the parts over again.

You might need to go more in depth with the relationship between Finrod and Elenwe because Finrod's reaction sounds a bit or more than of over-reacting for his cousin's wife even if that cousin was his favorite cousin and also his best friend. I understand that he felt sorrow for all the tragedies and deaths that have been befalling the Noldor and decided to say it after a relative by marriage's death, but there should be more behind their being acquantices for example and that Finrod "saw in her death what the future held for all his loved ones." Fiondil, will you try and add some background info about Elenwe and Finrod?

Nice description of the Aurora Borealis!(at least I hope that was an aurora you were describing in the flashback when you described "Above them curtains of lights, mostly red but sometimes other shades, shimmered all around..." Have you ever seen an Aurora though? I wish I could, but I just can't...*Weep*

Continue your story please!

Namarie!

Author Reply: I've only seen the aurora borealis once when I was ten. They suddenly appeared over us in Central New York, huge shimmering sheets of red, and there was absolute silence, no crackling of electricity or anything. I've never seen them since, but I haven't forgotten them.

Whether Elenwë and Finrod's relationship is ever explored furthyer (in this story) at least) remains to be seen.

Finrod certainly has his hands full, but he's more than capable of handling the pressure... better than Glorfindel at this point in time.

Now that the wool’s dyed, it will need to be carded: another job Glorfindel would rather avoid. Or has the wool already been spun (same wool as before)? No matter -- I don’t think Míriel is eager for Vorondil to do anything else for her.

Míriel’s making a career of entertaining and feeding kings.... Now all she needs is Olwë and she’ll have collected the whole set....

Hm. Finrod’s been reminded about Amarië twice in one day, and she’s coming soon.

Poor Vorondil was promised he *didn’t* have to meet with the Valar. Well, at least (apparently) Sador will be there to hold his hand.

Aha! It’s the tale of “Vorondil and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very *Wet* Day.” [Possibly obscure children’s-librarianish reference to Judith Viorst’s classic picture book about Alexander’s very bad day.]

So now there are additional items to worry/puzzle about -- besides the previous ones: a) whatever reason Ingwion is arriving after everyone else; b) who wins the tournament; c) what happens when the Bad Guys attack; d) the circumstances under which Glorfindel will next see the cloak-pin he made. Now add: 1) whatever Manwë will say to Sador and Vorondil [probably telling them to keep out of the way if mayhem breaks out at the tourney]; 2) Finrod and Amarië [difficult, as Finrod is so busy]; 3) Glorfindel and Ingwë [possibly this afternoon]; 4) what Finrod will do as full-fledged Fëanturinildo [presumably that is a ways in the future; I am imagining something fairly spectacular which shocks Finrod as much as everyone else when he hears himself saying it].

Author Reply: Yes, this is the same wool and I'm sure Miriel is happy that Glorfindel's indenture is almost up and he won't be bringing any of his "thrall friends" home with him. *grin*

I've never read Judith Viorst, but no doubt Someone must have been channeling...

As for your worries/puzzles... that's how I get you and my other readers to come back to the story time and time again. *grin*

Finished at last! Alassiel's fate is interesting - Finrod is inventive. Good thing Vorondil isn't allowed a sword yet, he really attracts disaster.
- I realise my comments are a bit one-sided, no serious, deeper parts of the story touched. It's easier for me to remark on humorous part because it's the good mood that gets me reviewing; when sad or concerned I need more time to process the feelings... and by then the computer is long since off.
- Sorry, my cat is hogging the keyboard, it's time to go.

Author Reply: Don't worry about your comments being one-sided. Any comments are welcome and comments on the humor of a story is as important (for me as the author) as comments on the more serious aspects of a story. Humor is often hard to achieve so I appreciate it when someone thinks I got it right. Thanks for taking the time to review.

Hmmm ... the Noldóran is taking Glorfindel to meet the other two kings? Now I wonder how our favourite balrog-slayer will take this meeting. Somehow I fear that will not go without some incident ... but maybe I’m too suspicious.

Vorondil is a danger to civilization? Finrod could be right *snicker* After the end of this chapter I strongly recommend to keep Vorondil away from any fluids, if even a Maia is not enough to keep an eye on him and him out of trouble! Poor elfling, that was more embarrassment than he can bear in one day! Oh, and I *truly* hope Námo was mistaken and Vorondil doesn’t have to die – somehow I get the feeling if Finrod was threatened, Vorondil would throw himself between his master and any foe.

How very sensible of Sador to tell the others finally about their gift for Amarië! What would they do without Sador? And he even helped to convince Vorondil to go out in spite of his ... uh... coloured state. Though I have the feeling he was at least partly to blame for Vorondil getting Ingwion’s clothes wet *grin* I truly wonder why Manwë wants to talk to them, too.

As for his meeting with Finrod ... it is unimaginable that Námo designed his symbol *so* early. One truly wonders how much he knows about the future ... it’s a bit ... intimidating – can’t find a better word. And the oath was another turn I’d not expected. Considering the circumstances, it was certainly understandable Finrod uttered it in the first place, but still ... what a shock for him to be confronted with it, as he up to then didn’t even remember it! At least Finrod found a way out of it, and for that I am glad. And even more glad I am this was Finrod and not Glorfindel, as I don’t think Glorfindel could have coped with something like that just now.

Can’t wait for more!

Author Reply: Vorondil is certainly the Eldar's answer to "Leave it to Beaver", isn't he? *lol* And thepoor ellon has to suffer from looking different from all the other elflings. Image is everything, it seems, even to adolescent Eldar.

When one considers how "old" the Valar truly are by this time, they can be very intimidating. I have to wonder if even the other Valar or Maiar find Namo's prescience unnervng at times.

Finrod is of course more mature at this point than Glorfindel and is able to process the shock of his memories better and to approach a solution in an adult manner. Certainly Glorfindel would never have come up with the solution Finrod came up with, which was both comprehensive and unique.

Wasn't expecting the whole oath thing, though loved the ending with the most recent oath to be added. What an odd and interesting and sometimes painful job oath recorder must be! Your portrayal of the majesty of Eonwe and Manwe is exquisite and almost tangible. Poor Finrod always having to cope with so many things from the past that keep cropping up just things seem to be settling down, but I guess that once he reaches a certain point in his healing he is ready for more healing to take place.

I do have to wonder though is perhaps Namo misread what he foresaw concerning Vorondil - I think that that kid will send those around him to Mandos loooong before he goes there himself - if he ever does.

Keep up the most excellent work!

Author Reply: The image of Eonwe as the Recorder of Oaths, not to mention Manwe's Herald, is a nod towards the "Recording Angel" of Catholic tradition but with a definite Middle-earth twist to it. Besides I can't imagine any of the Maiar being just single-purpose beings. No one is.

Healing is a never ending process, I think. Even after death I think healing goes on and as one level of healing is achieved, another level presents itself. As frustrating as that may seem I think it is also very hopeful, for we are always assured of healing even when we do not realize we need it.

Awesome. In light of what has just happened between Finrod and the Valar I have to wonder if a former playmate is about to make an appearance. Manwe's interest in Vorondil is also cause for speculation-hmmm...I can easily see him sacrificing himself for Finrod's wellbeing if circumstances warranted such a choice, at least in Vorondil's way of thinking. He is indeed very young...

BC

Author Reply: Finrod being a "Master" Feanuturindo would necessitate him getting rid of any emotional baggage he might have in order to do his work effectively. Manwe did tell Finrod that Vorondil's Judgment would have unforseen consequences and he is naturally interested in giving the ellon a "spiritual check-up".

And Vorondil is indeed very young in many ways.
