| Hello, Fiondil- I just found your stories not too long ago, and I think that they are amazing, this one especially! Thanks. I especially enjoy Glorfindel's relationship with the Maiar, very appropriate, I think. | I'm feeling sorry for those two elves in the trees. No one will ever give them an explanation.... “Why can’t I be an apprentice, too?” -- I don’t know about being an apprentice, but Glorfindel seems to have been adopted by a large and growing number of Maiar. Author Reply: 'I'm feeling sorry for those two elves in the trees. No one will ever give them an explanation...." And such is life.... Glorfindel is still emotionally young and "status-conscious" like most teens and all he sees is what is "brothers" are doing and thinking no one loves him because they haven't made him their apprentice. Typical adolescent thinking, of course. And as one of the Maiar points out, he was an apprentice of sorts to the jewel-smith, so why is he complaining? And like most younger siblings he's trying to play "catch up" with his older brother, and failing miserably. | |

| Glorfindel, Glorfindel, Glorfindel... he does make it hard on himself, doesn't he? I wonder if there is any kind of quick healing stuff that can get him ready for the tournament... probably not. sigh. Arafinwe and Olwe were right in making him withdraw the challenge, but what a way to get to that point! Author Reply: Glorfindel... you gotta love him! He tries so hard to be grown up but has forgotten how. It'll take him a few more decades to get it right, I suspect. I'm sure that in the end it'll all work out... actually it does, since we see him battling against the Nazgul in LOTR, but right now he's still the elfling and not the elf-lord. | |

| Okay, I think from here out I should be caught up and will try to review more. These last few chapters have really made my days and distracted from a tough month. I just adore Glorfindel and it breaks my heart sometimes to see what he has to go through, however, his stubborness is so priceless, I can't help but snicker when he gets the tar beat out of him. It's a mixture of compassionate amusement. Of course, I'd love to tend the wounds afterwards. *grin* And I would love to find a story with a good romantic plot for him (not thinking this one will be, but do you know of any?) Thank you for sharing such fabulous tales. They stir my heart, bring a smile and I often wipe a tear. NiRi Author Reply: I'm glad these last chapters have made your days and distracted you from life's upsets. Glorindel is one tough cookie, but very adorable nonetheless. I'm sure the Maiar who participated in the "let's beat the snot out of our favourite Balrog-slayer" free-for-all admired his tenacity and determination and have nothing but the greatest respect for him as a warrior and as a Child of Ilúvatar. It was indeed a case of "compassionate amusement" and served its purpose very well. As for romantic stories with Glorfindel... sorry, I have no idea. And as far as my story is concerned... you'll just have to wait and see. I know many readers are hoping Glorfindel and Alassiel will eventually get together. Only time and the Valar will tell. | |

| I'm sorry. I went back and re-read Chapters 99 ("My oath I have given to another, but thou hast my forgiveness and my love, Sire, if ... if I have thy forgiveness as well.") and 100 ("'I suspected as much once I...got over my anger towards you and thought things through.' He ducked his head in embarrassment."). I cannot make the connection between Glorfindel's interactions with the High King in them and his challenge of the High King in this chapter. If, for example, Glorfindel had sulkily refused some ceremonial role in the tournament or New Year celebration until his sword-brothers and their brethren played with him, that I could understand. But his anger here with the High King seems like a plot discontinuity. Author Reply: It's not so much a plot discontinuity as much as it is the hidden side of anger we all experience. Sometimes, even when we verbally forgive another, there is always residual anger, usually hidden even from ourselves, so that outwardly we appear to be okay with things but inwardly we're still seething but now on an unconscious level. Glorfindel has forgiven everyone on the surface, but not deep inside himself. His learning that even Finrod, his own "brother", would have done something similar to what Ingwë did to him was something of a shock and perhaps he suffered a relapse into anger. Also, the challenge would have been, not a manifestation of anger, but a need on Glorfindel's part to exact restitution. His honor has been tarhished by what has happened. It needs to be redressed. What Glorfindel has not done is talked about his experience. He's kept all his emotions inside himself where they are festering. The others around him realize he needs to express what he is feeling, if not to them then to someone, anyone. In this case, the Maiar are more than willing to listen. | |

| To be honest, I don’t truly know how to think about the matter with Glorfindel. Even if I don’t approve of the challenge, I can still understand him rather well – he felt hurt so much, and after all that happened over the last months, it was a bit too much. I think mostly I feel sorry for him. At least he got to work off his frustration. It says a lot about Glorfindel that it needed four Maiar, I think. And I couldn’t help but snickering about Eönwë recording all these oaths Glorfindel made during the wrestling. Now I only wonder if Glorfindel is truly over the whole matter or if he still holds a grudge. Author Reply: Glordindel is one tough cookie, that's for sure. He's truly trying to reconcile his feelings with what happened to him, but he's going about it the wrong way with the challenge. His friends realize this and only want to help him, if he would just let them. I think that 'talking it out' with the Maiar has gone a long way towards diffusing any deep-seated residual resentment Glorfindel may be harboring within his fëa. One can only hope, and as Námo tells Vorondil, it really isn't good to hold a grudge. | |
